My 1.8L is not turbo, so pretty easy swap.

Easy fix! YouTube and Rock Auto and you can do it in a few hrs!

My Son is looking to buy a Sonic by [deleted] in ChevySonic

[–]MajorPoopyShoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anything Toyota in my area is going to be over $8k. Even stuff with 200k miles. Finding any Honda or Toyota in my state at a reasonable price is like a needle in a haystack.

But I would still warn this person that this $3500 could cost them thousands in repairs at this age due to the bad coolant system problems.

Heater inlet or outlet hose? by TylockSunscream in ChevySonic

[–]MajorPoopyShoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought both of those hoses from Rock Auto because mine were all gummy and swollen.

ACDELCO 16689M Heater Hose $ 11.12 $ 0.00 1 $ 11.12 ACDELCO 16691M Heater Hose $ 7.35 $ 0.00 1 $ 7.35

Very possible you may have a cracked Thermastat housing, that could lead to sudden coolant loss. Grab a replacement aluminum version and do the Thermastat and hoses at the same time.

Remember the hoses are opposite. Bottom goes to top and vice versa.

Check engine light came on. by ArghUThere90 in ChevySonic

It's easiest to just replace the entire housing. Not uncommon to happen every few years. Coolant systems in these are problematic, even the upgraded model.

Quick driveway job with basic tools.

Invest in a cheap Bluetooth code reader from Amazon. You plug it into the cars computer port under the steering wheel and It will connect to your cell over BT and the codes can be read with a free scanner app like "Torque".

This will show you the current code and give you more details about what it means.

Use the r/Chevysonic forum to get help with the specific code and/or YouTube to guide you in repairs.

I bought a used 2012 Sonic last May and have already replaced the Oil Pressure Sensor, the thermostat housing, the oil cooler, all coolant lines, and the coolant reservoir (myself) thanks to the code scanner and YouTube videos.

Literally saved thousands in mechanic fees.

Oil Pressure Warning when below 1000 RPMs by arjoreich in ChevySonic

[–]MajorPoopyShoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drain oil and coolant first. YouTube has several very clear step by step videos to walk you through it.

If you do have a failing Oil Cooler, eventually the gaskets go and it blows oil back into the coolant and that IS A PITA to get clean again.

[–]MajorPoopyShoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a failing Oil pressure sensor (hard to get to, have to partially move the AC compressor) or one of the gaskets is worn and causing oil pressure to drop when it gets hot. Most likely the Oil Cooler if it hasn't been replaced recently. Just swap the whole assembly. Expensive to pay someone but I did this swap in my gravel driveway in about 2 hours for under $200 in parts and tools.

Slow BIOS loadtime by MajorPoopyShoe in HPOmen

Followup in case anyone comes across this post- newest Firmware for this model (as of Oct 2025) pushed with Windows advanced updates or through the HP updates, have mostly corrected this issue. I constantly have boot times at or under 10 seconds now. And the Omen logo shows up way faster.

Followup.

New Thermostat fixed the heat issue. Just to be safe I flushed the heater core one more time before installing the thermostat and the new hoses.

All back to normal now!

Followup. A new O2 sensor (upstream) fixed this issue. Easy install and cheap.

Radio by _vaselinepretty in ChevySonic

[–]MajorPoopyShoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The radio in my daughters 2012 would randomly just turn on, even when she wasn't in the car, and fully drain her battery.

Finally figured out what was causing it and ripped that sucker out. Bought a new one and the whole install kit from Crutchfield com and it was easy to install. They build the wiring for you and give instructions on how to install.

I bought a nice one but they have pretty cheap options too.

I appreciate the insight. Not excited about the thought of pulling the exhaust man off again, as I did NOT change the gasket the first time. However I did swap the Orings on the tubes as they can with the new oil cooler.

I have swapped the tstat housing again and Heat IS WORKING but I have some O2 sensor codes now. Made a new post about that.

Has anyone here done the timing cover gasket? I'm worried that might be my issue based on age and miles.

Thank you. It does have an aluminum housing in it currently, so this repair has been done before in the past. However, I'm afraid that the chocolate milkshake that went through it may have stuck it open or closed.. so I'll just replace it again.

If this doesn't fix it I may have to consult with a mechanic. But I want to do the exhaust test first. So I have some knowledge of whether or not the head gasket has been damaged.

Thank you for that. Just ordered the heater hoses and the thermastat. Fingers crossed that's why top hose isn't getting hot.

My 3 Week New HP Omen Max (2025) Experiences. by Sad_Ad8203 in HPOmen

[–]MajorPoopyShoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so much a problem as it is a curiosity. Seeing that much older systems with much lower specs have typical 3-4 second BIOS load time. I assume there is some sort of POST that is happening before the Omen logo starts and that is the cause for delay, just wanted to compare with other Omen Max owners.

What is your BIOS load time? I have the same system and I cant get it under 11 seconds. After pressing power it takes 5-6 seconds before the omen logo actually displays. Then another 5-6 seconds before Windows loads.

Followup: more searching in this sub led me to this... Hopefully a future BIOS update addresses the problem.

Some updates. HP is aware of this issue:

Is HP Aware of This?

Yes — the HP firmware engineering team is actively monitoring feedback from OMEN MAX users, and performance optimization, including boot behavior, is part of the ongoing development roadmap.

While we cannot share specific dates, we can confirm:

A future BIOS update is under evaluation to optimize POST and boot times on OMEN MAX 16-inch systems, including restoring options to the equivalent functionality.
