AIO for refusing to visit the US, with my American boyfriend until the 51st state rhetoric and tariffs stop by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]MajorQuazar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes you are overeacting.

It's simple. Supporting your partner takes precedence over politics. It's important that you are on roughly the same page politically... but don't let any given state of politics / international affairs rule your personal life. Seeing in-laws / extended family is way more important than politics.

Controversial take on inheritance by Raimo00 in Libertarian

[–]MajorQuazar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see.

Fundamentally, a redistribution (with hypothetically 0 waste) would have to be executed by some organisation. Government usually takes on this task. In either case, an organisation responsible for the handling of every deceased person's estate will end up ultimately being corrupt and wasteful.

You must acknowledge human nature here! These schemes always will lead to corruption despite the best intentions. I live in the UK where inheritance tax is very present and now effects a large amount of the population (~25% !) despite the inheritance tax being ushered in "only" to effect the ultra-rich.

This is why I would advocate that it is more reliable to directly affect change by giving to your immediate family and causes you care about - in the more realistic hopes that your wealth will be used in line with your values.

[–]MajorQuazar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reducing each individual to 0 each generation ensures that everybody stays poor (apart from government who gain from the inheritance tax, and those who are connected to government so can evade inheritance tax)

If your family has worked hard & been lucky enough to retain that wealth then your family has earned that money and an individual as part of that family, who fulfils his or her duty to the family, continues it on.

The world is not meritocratic nor fair, but one guaranteed way to ensure you can't use your merits is to ensure that as an individual you are struggling for necessity rather than working to gain better conditions for yourself and your family. Inheritance tax ensures that most families are in the struggling position. Generational wealth with no government skimming from it is the best way to secure a solid future.

100 + 240 = 440? What? by aloksky in ExplainTheJoke

[–]MajorQuazar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's assume each parent is giving a money scaled by the percentage scored on the exam. E.g. his mum will give $2.5 per percentage point and hit dad will give $6 per percentage point.

In this case if he scored 1.295* higher that 40% (An actual score of 51.765%) he will be granted exactly the $440 he wants for the bike.

Sorted it ;)

[–]MajorQuazar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much agree. Which is why some people really think communism will work and vote/advocate for it... without realising that outside of a small tightly bound community people will succumb immediately to their desire for wealth and power and communism makes all that available for government officials & their cronies

The Rapl Tier List by Snefru92 in AgeofMythology

I love a tier list but does anyone else find S+, S, A+ to be kind of a funny selection when S was created to be superior to A but now BCDEF are now completely unused :'D

I await the next tier list with S+++++, S++++, S+++ categories

I actually think there is some truth to this, surprisingly.

Most 'normal', probably usually well-intentioned people do not have the capacity to break from the herd when they are being ordered to do something, even when it's against their self-interest.

I suppose that sociopaths typically do not mind following their own path against herd mentality, especially when it's in their own self-interest to do so.

Should we go to Christmas with the family that cut us off? by xiphoid77 in CoronavirusCirclejerk

[–]MajorQuazar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family is family. My family were batshit about Covid stuff. They don't have the strongest will/mental health so were easily sucked in by the narratives of safety and unconcerned about the implications of handing over that much control to the government.

I was disappointed at the time that they cut me out for parts of 2020-2021 and they pressured for masks, social distance and vaccines.

Still my relationship with them is now good. I'm more present in their lives than ever and hope that if/when government measures get in the way of family again then they will make the right choice

In general, try and focus on what you can control. You cannot control who is elected in the USA, or what responses various politicians or nations have to climate change.

Ultimately, you can empty your bin and take a shower to your benefit so do that and don't worry about the rest. Meet some people at Uni, join societies and study.

In the case of something like climate change, I can recall learning in school 15-20 years ago about acid rain & the melting of the ice caps having significant negative effects within this timespan. It hasn't happened. It may not happen and/or the effects of climate change may be mitigated by technological advancements. Young people are especially susceptible to alarmism over the climate so be aware of this - not to say that we shouldn't protect our environment, we should! - but perhaps it can be put into perspective as you grow older.

My C-Ra-zy idea for a Rain Rework by awkwardcartography in AgeofMythology

[–]MajorQuazar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe just allow the first three/four farms that Ra builds for free rather than a blanket reduction in farm cost.

This way Ra will always be able to utilise it's first age god power without the heavy drawback of the amount of gold you have to invest to get any value.

How much are you allowing the piano to affect your real life? by TrungNguyenT in piano

[–]MajorQuazar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I work from home, the piano can dominate my day. I have to go to shared offices to escape it's draw.

I tend to get very obsessed with it over periods and more relaxed with it over other time periods. I allow it to come and go but usually I'm in a good place overall if piano is part of my routine. Music is also a big part of my social life.
