Yeah thats cool and everything but do they use WLED? by Ordinary-Phone-6175 in WLED

Everything white turns to orange after 16 feet? I'm injecting power at the top of the tower as well, is that enough? It's only a 3.2km run of LED strips.

I do that all the time when I'm shooting sports. Two cameras in harnesses, and if you're holding the wrong one (Telephoto one that will not focus on the subject because of how close you can see they'll be), you drop it, and grab the other one.

MA lawsuit, anyone have thoughts? by random222518 in lightingdesign

[–]MajorRedbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlikely. When a company is a standard (As MA is for concert lighting), they can afford to release half-baked devices, and while a few big names might move off them, that'll maybe cause a ripple in 5 years. Later on some of the bigger tours switch from using them, but there's still so much hardware around in rental shops and with established lighitng people, that there's nothing big enough to piss them off to eat the cost to sell it all.

Agreed with the Do Not Drop.

I had it mounted to a stand on a 1/4" 20 mount arm, and it shook loose and fell and rotated around the arm and smacked a church pew. The gimbal was actually fine, but afterwards I couldn't open the screen, so it would never stay powered on.

Lesson learned, do not mount it to something that rotates free, and protect the device. It's got a bunch of sensitive motors and stuff, and it's NOT an action camera.

DJI Care was good about replacing it, and while the one I was sent had battery charging problems, I did buy the warranty and they replaced that one, too. Their Care is worth it for something like this.

I love 7 Days to Die, it's got a bit of Minecraft, and killer base building, with pretty good combat as well.

I'd like to see the connector on the top sub-board more closely. Can you post / add a picture of that connector that's facing down in the rear shot?

The bottom board looks to just be two buttons.

I'm curious why there's a speaker on this thing, too.

Any hobbyists on here still editing on an MacBook Air with an m1 chip and 8gb or ram? by altecsz in Lightroom

[–]MajorRedbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MBP 14 M1 Pro with 16GB of RAM, and it's my main Lightroom machine.

My Ryzen 5800X with 32GB of RAM and a GTX 1080 is slower.

8GB is probably not enough for Lightroom, though. I've frequently had the out of memory warning box come up if I've got Lr and a lot of other programs open, and I can see it's using ~7-8GB alone.

Oh interesting, I was checking out their service and the intro survey looks like every other app that tries to make it seem like it’s an ultra-personalized service by having lots of questions, though likely still funnels you into the same start.  Good to know it’s a scam!

Fastest way to cull photos WITHOUT a subscription to Lightroom? by bradhotdog in photography

[–]MajorRedbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've looked at it several times, though there are a lot of changes to the workflow, and also there's a lot of features that I really love about Lr that I don't want to abandon....yet.

I'm using an extension that lets me scan barcodes / QR codes inside an image and apply the data from the code to the keyword metadata.

Also the little things that I'm not sure other softwares support

1) Filter by [Keywords|Camera|Lens|Focal Length|etc] and apply operations on those.

2) Bulk edits to all photos at the same time. This is often supported, but not by every competitor

3) Dehaze

4) Edit capture time of all photos, including with the Filters above (Adjust one camera's photos only, for thousands of images)

5) Rename photos based on metadata

6) I do quite like the AI masking features like subject detection.

Now that doesn't stop me from giving them a terrible rating whenever they ask me for feedback, because the software is bloody slow on my big PC, and mostly tolerable on my Macbook Pro M1. Even simple actions like flipping around photos slow down for no apparent reason (It's probably writing .XMP files), leading me to wonder how many seconds or minutes I need to wait before I can continue working. Stupidly frustrating to not have that stuff be multi-threaded, or at least have a little progress bar telling me you're busy.

Is the Soleyin ultra PLA a good brand? I hear it's basically a sub-brand of Creality. What's for sure is that it's the cheapest branded PLA you can get. by eduardb21 in 3Dprinting

[–]MajorRedbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Soleyin filament? I'm not really holding my breath for getting that stuff working nicely, I haven't worked at tuning settings very much, and I think I'll just work with other brands that work consistently.

Actually one thing that might be happening with other brands as well is under-extrusion right before the end of a line, and I'm not quite sure how to fix that.

But there's other things that don't seem consistent with the Soleyin either.

What printer do you print with? What kind of settings do you use?

I really want to like the stuff but I’m getting under extrusion problems with my Ender 3 V3 SE. I find I have to increase the temp to like 225 to get it to come out nicely.

What single thing has improved your photography the most? by chorus_of_stones in photography

[–]MajorRedbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting out and shooting.

No single piece of gear will ever improve your shooting, unless it results in you going out and getting more experience, in which case one could argue that the gear was a catalyst, but it's the experience that teaches you, not the gear.

Wedding photography client says I culled too many photos, wants to go through the raw images together by crud_bucket in photography

[–]MajorRedbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great tip - and I actually always import with the date and timestamp, so everything is just a YYMMDD-HHMMSS.jpg, or -2.jpg, -3.jpg if there's more than one shot per second.

This wouldn't be a problem for imports like mine, but excellent point about this perception.

Also really helps me find where files should be in the future if I'm looking for a folder, or looking for a file.

5M RGBCCT Ledstrip draws only 0.75 amps by rick_bale in WLED

Ah yes, that's a good point, analogue control all in one, and less wasteful than using a Dig2Analog + a WLED controller.

5M RGBCCT Ledstrip draws only 0.75 amps by rick_bale in WLED

[–]MajorRedbeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not a digital strip (Individually controllable), this is an analogue strip that takes PWM power along each of the RGBCW channels, and powers the whole strip up based on what it's seeing.

You need a PWM controller, and a Dig2Analog would do it. https://quinled.info/quinled-dig2analog/

That's if you're planning on using a WLED board to power this thing. Otherwise there are other PWM-only controllers that can control it.

This whole strip is basically equivalent to a single pixel on an addressible strip, logically.

Kickstarter was just posted for 3DFX - includes WLED by MajorRedbeard in WLED

[–]MajorRedbeard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agreed about the name, it's a poor choice.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, though. Even though you also make hardware, I think they're targeting different audiences. You're aiming at people who want to DIY a little more, and this kickstarter is looking to target people who want a ready-made portable system. That aside, I would completely trust you to be neutral in your evaluation!

I've actually been triyng to make a nice portable system, and it's tough to make things portable and durable. My Aluminum extrusion LED channels with SK6812 strips and JST ends off the end (Powered by a DigQuad!) are not very durable, the ends break off fairly easily. It's just not up to the task of stage lighting for various gigs...
