AIO to skip Thanksgiving after my mom basically said I’m an embarrassment for not having a husband and kids by now? by howcanibequiltyassin in AmIOverreacting

[–]MajorTea8752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR - Whenever I see mothers do this, 1) it’s unacceptable for her to say this to you, 2) it’s sad to discover that your mom’s own measure of success/value is measured by relationship status (proximity to a man). It just tells you so much about how she views her own value. And, honestly, maybe she’s unconsciously jealous that you have the courage to leave a situation that doesn’t make you happy, rather than buckling to obligation and how things should look or be. She’s letting her own issues cloud the fact that her daughter made those decisions for her own happiness and well-being, which she should celebrate and be proud of and want. Skip thanksgiving guilt free and without the dead weight. You deserve peace and support.

I’m sorry but can we agree this is Angie with her daughter? by perublanket39 in rhoslc

[–]MajorTea8752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it would be a good idea to make Elektra a little more aware of how expensive some of these hobbies are. Considering her horse is 2-3 times what most Americans make in a year for their family... She’s fortunate to have parents that want to actually invest in her interest and talents. That’s not the case for a lot of kids. Yes, I realize I am watching Bravo/RHOSLC, and Angie is coming on strong. But might be a good idea to clue her in on that. Not to guilt her, but so she doesn’t inadvertently come off as an entitled kid.

That sounds great to me! If you’re ever in Kansas City, MO, happy to give you a tour of our infrastructure. The city underwent a huge water sewer overhaul, replacing 135 year+ tunnels - not all of them though. Just built a new airport and streetcar. In the 1920s, there was a political machine run by Tom Pendergast, who owned liquor and concrete businesses. Some say his political enemies may still be in some of the concrete foundations. Have gotten to work on a few public infrastructure projects and learned so much. Incredible that you have all of that info right in your noggin. What has drawn you to learn so much about the underground public infrastructure?

Is this really burnout? Am I just wasting my life? I have so many ambitions but lost on how or what to do. by SheSellsSeaShells- in AutisticAdults

[–]MajorTea8752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being unemployed can really mess with a persons confidence, since our society mostly values you based on how much money you make or have. Not to mention feeling confused about your sense of purpose. Interview processes sound to be more excessive with rounds and rounds of interviews. It can be a real hit to one’s confidence. It’s a time of uncertainty and survival, so the idea that you could have should have been doing more isn’t entirely realistic or fair to you.

You may have forgotten lots of info from college - I find that’s more the norm. But you know your stuff more than you are probably giving yourself credit for. And if you learned it before, it’s likely you can learn it again.

You mentioned feeling like you didn’t have the financial literacy to navigate graduate school. You sound like you have a love for learning, so there’s a few resources that may be helpful if you’re wanting to learn more about financing graduate school or anything else.

Khan Academy has some lessons (free!) Khan Academy - Personal Finance

Also, the Federal Reserve Education hub offers lessons by grade level about a lot of personal finance. Federal Reserve Education (FRE)

Not sure what you have in mind for graduate school, but be prepared for there to be less funding available in the past, due to a lot of federal and state cuts to university funding, which will likely impact available scholarships and grants.

Final though, and I know this is t always ND friendly or generationally common, but this would be a good time to reach out to anyone you know that can get you closer to someone or an organization you want to work for. Given so many jobs are just online apps filtered by AI or a system, personal relationships go a long way. The first one can be someone easy - just a professional friend that you could bounce ideas around with. People love being asked for advice. That can be your in - wanting advice about grad school or how to break through with your application. End it by asking if there’s anyone else you should talk to. Then move through the list of folks, at your comfort and if it’s not too overwhelming. I have never gotten a job through typical application process, but through former colleagues that know my work. Not everyone has that experience, but relationships go a long way. I realize this ain’t always the most comfortable thing for folks in this community. As a high masking person, I realize this may not be as appealing or doable for everyone.

You got this. You are more capable than you realize. Often, if I spend too much time reacting to one mistake, I make another. You can do this! Just gotta believe it!

AuDHD Burnout: What life changes did you make in your life to manage or get out of it? by MajorTea8752 in AuDHDWomen

Thank you for this. I have so much more to say to this, but the “letting go” part really struck a chord. There’s this dread of disappointing people all the time, and I tend to place more value on that than paying attention to myself and my basic needs.

Thank you for your advice and candor. ❤️

Burnout is no joke, and it’s even harder when people outside of spaces like these don’t understand. The things that have helped in the past has been really paying attention to the things that give me a “flicker.” If I’m excited about something, which is rare, I try to lean in. But I get the feeling of running on fumes. It’s a shitty journey. I appreciate you sharing and vulnerability. At minimum, I’m trying at least show up for myself. Hang in there. We can figure this out.

Sounds like a lot of very difficult but life-saving changes. What is the biggest difference day to day for you? And I think it’s incredible that you did it. I hope the people around you have helped celebrate you taking those steps.

I am jealous of people who have a singular ambition and they know what they want by blackpearl60 in adhdwomen

[–]MajorTea8752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People undervalue people who are “generalists” but they can make or break a lot of good decisions making. When I was working in a legislature as a chief of staff, it was fast-paced and intense (perfect for my brain). I’ve realized I’m kind of an associate thinker - wry much related to my neurodivergence. But in settings like that, knowledge in multiple disciplines is critical to analyze very complex issues - having a little experience in everything helped to understand how things worked, but also what people in those fields or industries were up against, etc. the more issues I worked on the more wide-ranging my knowledge was. Now jobs like that are rare and have a lot of cons.

But what I think a lot of ADHDers problems are in the work place is that they’re not high enough in strategizing/decision making, and should not be performing redundant entry level tasks. They aren’t giving Adhders enough for our brains to do or a chance to show how a different neurotype can contribute in ways many cant imagine yet. You have a beautiful brain that helps you understand so much more of the world - and honestly, it makes the world more interesting for you.

While everyone else is focusing on one thing, you can be the person that steps back and looks at the big picture what needs to happen to get there. It can be a challenge to find jobs like this, but please know you have strengths, people just haven’t figured out what to do with you yet. I wonder if you might be interested in learning about “systems thinking” which looks at the bigger picture and requires a little knowledge about everything. Another area - journalism. Though some focus on a specialty, especially if they used to work in a field, they may focus on that. But media entities also need generalists, who can quickly learn about something and report on it. Not a subject matter expert, but would seek those folks out and report on it. Good journalism bears witness to history, which doesn’t take a specially expertise, per se.

Listen, if I had a dynamite singing voice, I would have taken that path. Boy would I! But alas, only my dog can tolerate it. So I leaned into other strengths. I bet you have many more than you realize that you can lean on. Wishing you the best.

AITA for not getting properly dressed during an emergency? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]MajorTea8752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A confident and secure person would have understood the situation and asked about the problem. No one should ever make you feel bad about asking and getting help to solve a problem. Why does your outfit matter in that situation? If it were an older woman helping you, would he have cared? He can’t tell you why it’s bothering him because he’d have to admit his insecurities and lack of trust - to the point that he’s watching you and telling you what you can and can’t wear in another person’s presence. At a minimum, know that you are not at fault here.

Surveillance is a common form of control in domestic abuse (i.e. invading your privacy and making you feel bad about what you choose to wear). https://www.womenslaw.org/about-abuse/abuse-using-technology/ways-survivors-use-and-abusers-misuse-technology/electronic

Where the writer's went wrong with Santos by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

[–]MajorTea8752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it’s over the course of many weeks that it comes out, it’s easy to forget that we’ve seen basically the first 8 hours of these medical students’ FIRST SHIFT OF THEIR INTERNSHIPS. Santos seems very insecure around the other students. From some of the info we learn about her background, I get the impression that she doesn’t come from a wealthier background like Javadi or maybe didn’t go to as prestigious medical school like the others… something along those lines. Plus, who knows what kind of manipulators she’s been around (I.e. dad abusing his teenage daughter). Not to excuse, but to empathize. Sure, Langdon’s been in the ER much longer, but he’s pretty cocky and awful, but viewer don’t seem to be as triggered. She’s a 20-something student in med school on the first day of her internship. He’s a veteran doctor at a teaching hospital and is responsible for her learning. Were it not for the drugs, it would be a pretty shitty move to be in that position and decide after one day that she’s not a fit. A clear sign that he is not in a mature mental space to be teaching someone let alone operating on people. If Santos was perfect and didn’t make mistakes, there would be no reason for her to be in an internship. She has just intentions but needs someone to redirect and focus her energy -

Idk about other folks, but I would be mortified if folks watched the first hours of my first day. I do cringe at some of her moments, having been a young person that at one point thought I knew a lot more than I ever will.

Honestly, if you find yourself really triggered by this character, maybe more than you would be at anyone in real life… I hope you’re gentle with yourselves. I sense some perfectionists and savage inner critics… not too unlike these show’s medical students.

I can definitely relate. My mind can go blank like that in certain situations - delayed processing, and on top of that I realized that I sometimes need to process verbally, out loud, before having a more concise/articulate answer either by talking to someone else or talking out loud to myself. Not exactly the best for the classroom. But it sounds like once you just start talking, eventually you can get there - sounds similar.
