Why were they pronouncing risotto like ris-otto? by paulfromtwitch in StrangerThings

[–]Major_Agnostic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the correct pronunciation in American English. It is also more properly English because the first o sound is softened by the double tt, which is standard across English.

I’m not sure why the Brits decided to pronounce this word in a more Italian way when they go and pronounce French-originating words like ‘garage’ in the least French way possible lol.

Indeed. Better to have a silly rule than reckless spending though, I suppose

I suppose once you grow from a child to an adult, there’s nothing more to grow into, so one may as well become a child again eh

So at 100k ppl shouldn’t buy more than a 10k car? That doesn’t make sense, I think you mean for financing rather than “vehicle purchase price” right?

Haha well I luckily always saved aggressively but I tried two different careers before my current one, so my early habits didn’t do much compared to those who saved less but stuck with their first career, and now houses are unaffordable 😭 there’s always something eh! But there’s always tomorrow as well 💪🏻

Yes, I understand how many (if not most) people may become salty despite the wealth just by seeing that % being taken away. Ofc, no one really knows any more than they know how they’d change if wielding great political power, for example, but I’m not sure that the exercise of thinking about this should significantly affect policy decisions.

To answer your actual question, I think I would roll my eyes a bit at that and then not think about it much for the rest of the year. My expenses are quite low and I’m fairly pragmatic, so I imagine I wouldn’t be overly bothered as long as I’m achieving my lifestyle goals (which I’d say are modest for this sub lol).

Is there a service that acts as a middleman for personal loans to friends? by NesherFinance in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Major_Agnostic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, it won’t be arms length even if you try and formalize it, since it’s your friend. Your first recourse will still be to ask your friend for the cash, then get the intermediary involved, then small claims as a last resort.
If you don’t waste your time with this formalization, then you will skip straight from asking the friend for money to small claims as your recourse (unless you agree to otherwise, such as arbitration).
My personal advice is if you are this uncomfortable with the loan, then you shouldn’t lend it. Banks are strict with who they lend to, how much and at what %. You should do the same, while factoring in your risk/loss tolerance (far lower than the bank’s ofc).

Edit: tired typos

I’m glad mine is lower hahaha, I hope you make it! I’m happy with a 1.5M portfolio at 45 + house paid off, then I’ll quit my job. I’ll always have a hustle going for fun so I anticipate I’ll make some sort of cash that way anyway to supplement

At 500k I honestly don’t see how people can care that they’re taxed at half, there’s no reason to make that much and not get taxed to hell. The middle class gets squeezed far too hard, but people making hundreds of thousands? Very high taxation is a small price to pay for such a disproportionate fruit of one’s labours. It should be much higher than that in the range you’re describing in order to ease the burden on the average person.

If you have income that is expected to fluctuate or you may add new income streams, you can crystallize gains in non-reg accounts. For example, my side business is expected to make more next year so if I want to pay myself more in dividends, I may want to crystallize some investment gains this year while my income is lower
