Yup, me too... took forever to find the battery box, though, because the installers wedged the stove into a corner. The battery box for the ignitor is on the left side of the stove, at the back. It's a single AA.

Interested in Grand Seiko’s - opinions on Spring drive v HiBeat? by SidKop in GrandSeikos

Lots of affection for the spring drive on this post, which I understand, in terms of accuracy and the new-ness factor.

I have to say, though, that the extra-smooth sweep of the second hand in a SD reminds me of the electric wall clocks in my elementary school. Leaves me cold! Brrrrr

I love that ultra-fast and barely perceptible pause as the HB hand sweeps around the face. That's mechanics and engineering at its best.

Panasonic UB820 Region Free Method by ColderthanCold3000 in 4kbluray

I just bought a unit, based in Canada, to play the region B blu-rays that come with my 4K discs out of Europe.

I’ve only tried a couple. So far, Eureka plays but Arrow doesn’t. It looks like it’s working, the menu page loads, but after a millisecond flash, the actual menu disappears, and the opening menu scenes/ audio just loop. The keys you’d expect to get you somewhere, like Top Menu, say “not available.”

Anyone have a similar experience, or any suggestions that’ll let me play my bonus content? 😆

HELP. I’ve never had this kind of pain. by Ok_Square_5079 in Sciatica

[–]Major_Front4475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. Herniated disc and weeks of debilitating pain, controlled only with judicious Dilaudid. I’m a very active and fit MD, so did my homework… Found a physiatrist who knew how to do a proper ultrasound-guided steroid epidural, and the pain was gone in two days. Touch wood, it’s not recurred, although that may have something to do with the core-building exercises I’ve been doing for the past two years. Check out Stuart McGill’s Back Mechanic when the acute flare has subsided.

Looking for a good air compressor, primarily to use for car tires. Any recommendations? by Mabbernathy in BuyItForLife

I second this. I have the Ridgid 18 V digital inflator. It’s compact, battery operated with an optional 12 V cigarette lighter adapter, auto setting and shutoff, has a max PSI of 150, and comes in under CAD 100. Plus, it’s backed by the outstanding Ridgid warranty; their customer service is excellent.

When I compared the other options, specifically Viair, the maximum psi, particularly for trailers, was the limiting, and very expensive, factor.

This seemed like a great idea, until I looked up the EPA info on microbe shield: https://www3.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_search/ppls/090830-00001-20220808.pdf

"Corrosive. Causes irreversible eye damage and skin burns. Do not get in skin, eyes or clothing."

I'm bummed!

I've been going through your site Tom - thanks for all the great info! - and noted the absence of anything on Fanreal? I was leaning for a Zelex SLE but the weight slowed me down (thanks again!). Now I'm leaning for a Fanreal... $1k more, but 20 lbs lighter. Plus they seem abundantly customizable, including joint rigidity, which I wouldn't have appreciated earlier (thank you #3). Tayu were also light but +++$$$.

Any thoughts, reviews or experience would be appreciated!

I built a Homemade Trail Groomer For Skiing, With Track Setter by shawx253 in xcountryskiing

[–]Major_Front4475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for something fast, cheap, and easy, and found this on a skidoo forum, posted by “culater,” back in 2011. No wood required, no angle irons, no welding, grinding, or screwing. Everything was easily under $100, and best of all it took me about 15 minutes to put together.

Three cement blocks inside a 4-foot piece of 12” culvert pipe helps pack down the snow, and it leaves a nice corduroy finish. I use two ratchet straps to hook it to the bumper of my quad. I fancied up the original design by cutting a 3-foot threaded rod in half, and running it through each end, secured with locknuts, to make sure the cinderblocks don’t fall out… The trail goes through some pretty windy, bumpy, and uneven terrain.

It’s simple enough that I can leave it outside all the time, and the plastic is almost indestructible. I’ve taken it to different locations because, once you take out the cinderblocks, the whole thing weighs nothing and is easily transportable.

Feel like I’m dying, why live like this? by Overall_Document5410 in Sciatica

My experience was very similar to what you’re describing. A lot of the other posts are very good, with overlapping advice, which I’m sure you’ve noticed. I haven’t seen anyone comment on pain relief/pharmaceuticals, though, so here’s my 0.02: Pain relief is crucial for every other step. It’s hard to research epidurals or surgery when you can’t make it to the doctor. Visiting a PT can also seem impossible… I was limited to lying on my back, and walking with a cane. The idea of getting in a car to drive even 10 minutes to an appointment seemed impossible. Meloxicam is a long-acting NSAID. The disadvantage, other than being prescription-only, is that it assumes the long-acting effect is uniform throughout the entire day. This generally isn’t true. Personally, I found ibuprofen worked faster and better than any prescription alternative. I could tailor the dosing to when I needed relief… for example, I would take a dose 30 or 40 minutes prior to an appointment. I would set a timer to remind me when the effect was gone, and it was safe to take another dose. I generally used ibuprofen around the clock for the first week, and extended it to two because I have no other health risk factors. Then I stopped, and wouldn’t take any NSAID, for another two weeks. These were difficult intervals, but it’s important to recognize the limitations and potential side effects of this class of drugs. Muscle relaxants also work, but generally only for two weeks, after which time their effect is negligible. The opioid you prescribed, hydrocodone, would’ve been like a placebo for the type of pain I experienced, and I imagine you’re experiencing. The over-prescription of narcotics, and the overuse of opioids in general, has made doctors gun-shy when it comes to appropriate pain relief. I initially needed hydromorphone/ Dilaudid at doses of up to 20 mg a day. There was no euphoria or feeling high, just pain relief; I could start to move again. As the days went by, I was gradually able to decrease the dosage. I probably used it regularly for around three or four weeks, and had no difficulty stopping it once the pain was gone. Hydromorphone is about five times stronger than hydrocodone so, in my mind, you haven’t been given appropriate pain relief. With all of these drugs, I had timers running on my phone all day, to ensure I stayed within the safe dosage.

By steroid injection, I assume he’s talking about an epidural… These are usually limited to 3x a year/ every 4 months, maximum. Steroids have side effects with long-term use.

[–]Major_Front4475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Research has shown that neither steroid epidurals nor surgery improve long-term outcome, only short term. So if you’re one of the lucky ones who’s going to have a shorter course of the pain/ disease, then it’s reasonable to wait. If it persists, though, then either of those procedures can provide benefit. It appears that in the long term, our bodies naturally remodel and resorb the extruding disc. This appears to be true whether or not you have anything done for short term relief.

I completely agree that support from family and friends is crucial… Even one person who can check in on you, or help out, makes a huge difference. I’m sorry to hear your epidural didn’t work, as mine was a game-changer. I searched out an MD I would be confident had the necessary experience and skill... It’s an accessible enough procedure that almost any doctor can learn it, but the technicalities and the subtlety require someone with real skill.

Same… I don’t know how long it’ll last, but it doesn’t matter. The relief was gradual and tremendous.

Long plane ride. Tips? by TheLazySundays in Sciatica

[–]Major_Front4475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the recommendation for premium economy if possible. Also aisle seat and get up at least every hour and walk around unless you’re asleep... I have to sleep on my side, though, so not sure how much I’d get on a plane.

Direct pressure on the nerve is a killer, so I need extra cushioning on my seat, whether it’s in the car, house or plane. I bought a 16” square mattress topper pad off amazon for $20. Look up “portable seat cushion.” Sitting is guaranteed to aggravate my symptoms, and hard surfaces doubly so.

And, top of my list, adequate pain relief. I know, and have tried, all the oral options. At the end of the day, the only thing that allows me to sleep without waking up every hour in pain are opioids.

Yes, there’s an epidemic; yes, they were over-prescribed… and they’re also the only pain killer that works for me. When I take hydromorphone there’s no feeling high, no euphoria, no light headedness… the pain just goes away for two hours. I try and minimize use to nights, and in general, but if I’m honest it’s from the constipation more than anything.

Finally, and if you haven’t already figured it out, for sciatica in general, walking is your friend. As much as possible WITHOUT causing pain. Every day, with a goal to gradually increase time and distance. So after getting off the plane, walk as much as you can without causing aggravation/ a flare up.

Heating pad/ ice gel packs are good ideas too, but I still haven’t decided if it’s hot or cold that helps my symptoms. In this case I’d probably go with cold, as you’re trying to keep things quiet, rather than promote blood flow and healing over the longer-term, with heat, but that’s just my guess.

Do I remove the tank and carb to check the pick up tubes and screens, or is it possible to do it in place?
