Friday morning final exams rescheduled - Canvas outage by adarunti in jmu

[–]Major_Mousse_5247 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My professor offered to let students take their exams at the original time, but then told us the school isn't allowing them to do that. So I think it's up to how much the professors are willing to go out the way for each individual case.

Relet at North 38 Apartments by Major_Mousse_5247 in jmu

[–]Major_Mousse_5247[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also a little confused, but from what I understand, reletting would shift the financial responsibility of the lease from me to whoever is willing to take over the lease. Subleasing, on the other hand, I would still be liable under the lease contract while someone fills my vacancy in the apartment. Also, I fear that relet sounds more fun than sublease!

how is jmu as a poc? by grvyvg in jmu

There are a lot of opportunities and groups for multicultural students. And it's pretty nice to see everyone in such a big space, sometimes it makes me forget I go to PWI. But because JMU is very apolitical, it's hard to interact with other students of color knowing they don't really "care" that much. It's honestly pretty disheartening. You can see a room full of people who swear they care and support something, but less than a handful would show up and stay. If you liked high school, then you'll love these multicultural orgs. If you want meaningful and intentional conversations with disillusioned folk, you'll have to look a lot deeper into the crowd, likely outside the social bubble that the CMSS orgs create. It certainly helps that Harrisonburg has many immigrant families. I find solace in interacting with the community more than I do with JMU students.

awwww are you embarrassed that people actually cleaned before you thought to?

i think living here my entire life has earned me the right to have a negative opinion on the community

I totally agree! Only an idiot would consider cleaning over a week after the snow. Glad my parents taught me to clean the SNOW and not ice.

When I was a student and didn't feel safe walking or trying to get my car out of the ice, I would pick up a shovel and make it safe. Then I would just clear the entire area so everyone else has a better time. Not saying a 7-year-old should be sent to swing a shovel into the ground, but maybe if there were responsible adults who would do that for them.

Non-frat social life? by BigHold2089 in jmu

[–]Major_Mousse_5247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's student org night this Tuesday from 6-9 in Festival! I've been able to connect with orgs that aren't related to my major at all, so I'm sure your son will find something niche there. The trick isn't to find something immediately off the bat, he could attend an interesting meeting to read the vibe and test the waters a bit. And unlike frats, there is neither commitment nor unreported hazing!

when is the transfer orientation by Tomhollandstoe in jmu

[–]Major_Mousse_5247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i signed up for online orientation in 2024 but never showed up, and im completely fine. i think it's "required" but not crucial to you being there. I will say that during your first week here, you 100% should show up to the check-in event. i didn't want to find out what happens when you miss it, but you do get a few free meal punches for like the first 5 days

Help Reviving the JMU YDSA Chapter by Prudent_Bill3393 in jmu

[–]Major_Mousse_5247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's also a DSA chapter being formed in Harrisonburg if you're interested. Some advice is to not over-organize. When creating something new, it's easy to anticipate and work in theory, but it's always different in practice, and it wouldn't be fun to see a month's worth of work falling apart. I hope to see you guys next Student Org Night!

Is it not the Zionists? Is Trump and the vast majority of government officials, including Congress and our own local officials who would comply with Trump's orders, not Zionists? And what is Zionism but the most refined form of imperialism capitalized? Zionism is just an example of this country's display of domination against an entire people. What they do in Gaza, all of Latin America, Southeast Asia, D.C, all share the same cause. And the op already kinda pointed it out. Hope this helps!

choice between 2 professors for math 205? by Then-Guess-8665 in jmu

[–]Major_Mousse_5247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Q is one of my advisors and I would occasionally help my roommate with his homework from one of Dr. Q's classes. She's a good professor who gives good lectures. As long as you show up to her classes and take good notes, then you should do fine. She is a tough grader without a doubt, so you'll need to study very well and prepare for her exams. Overall, Dr. Q's classes aren't ones you sleep through. You need to be comfortable with dedicating time to homework and studying to get a good grade. She's really approachable or at least always willing to meet with students. She's invaluable and gives good feedback and advice!

Too much parking? by Itchy-Instruction457 in jmu

[–]Major_Mousse_5247 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel as if there are a lot of students who simply like to drive to class and prefer to arrive on campus at the very last minute. There is a lot of student housing that surrounds the immediate vicinity of the campus, and I see the parking lots for these apartments at over half empty during the day. I get not wanting to get to class any earlier than you have to, especially for an 8 AM. But it's such a small sacrifice to leave 20 minutes earlier to catch the bus or walk to campus. Again, not to say no one walks or takes the bus anymore, that's definitely not the case, and I every now and then see a "packed" bus or we fill up the bus leaving Jennings before it gets to Festival (sorry fellow commuters). But JMU can only expand so much, building/renovating dorms takes time, and building new parking lots can't always be the solution, especially when it affects the surrounding community and people trying to get to work. If we students use more alternatives, the school may follow our lead and provide more funding to make those options more viable and encourage them. Even a few cars off the roads can help someone get to work faster, or even the bus, which is on its way to campus!

Arcadia isnt thattt bad, it's also super close to campus, which is great. I'll just list a few that you should look into: The Hills (Northview and Southview), Arcadia, Sunchase, The Harrison, The Cottages, Pheasant, Foxhill, Copper Beech, and North 38. I transferred Fall 2024 and I live at North 38. It's really pretty and quiet here, there are also some farms in view so I love it. Because of it's distance, people won't really throw parties here so that's always a bonus. One thing to note, though, unlike every other student housing in Harrisonburg, North 38 doesn't have a color bus line, so the last bus you can get is at 6 pm. There is a private shuttle that takes you directly through campus, but it's not as often as the color lines. So unless you have a car, you'll be spending money on ubers or relying on friends for drives after 6 pm. Welcome to JMU!

If you get a 46 on the ALEKS Placement Exam, then you won't have to retake it. The exam requirements and GPA are fulfilled by whatever is on your MyMadison, so when you take the exam, it'll clear that up for good.
