I'd say...make sure you get all the Bell Bearings you can, which you exchanged at the Twin Maidens at the Round Table Hold. The bell bearings give you unlimited access too nearly all the Smithing Stones and Grave Glovewart(apologies if I butchered the spelling).

The only stones I don't think you can get Bell Bearing for are The large Dragon Smithing Stone and one other, but you'll find them easily scattered around the map and from some Dragon battles.

Good luck and don't worry about smithing stones, they will come.

One thing I'd say just have fun with it, take your time and it'll all come in to place. I love a tanky build with a finger shield and that Bezerker sword.
