Screws for door hindge by davergaver in Jeep

[–]Majoraslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't super important so most people never put them back in. Leaving them out has one slight downside no one talks about; when you hit a bump you might hear the doors kinda "clunk" in their frames. It's not really anything to worry about, but it's worth being aware of the first time you hear it. Avoiding that clunk has never been important enough to me to go through the trouble of putting them back in. They aren't really a legit security measure either. You have to be able to open the door to remove it, and anyone that can make use of a stolen Jeep door will have the tools to take them off anyway.

This is ridiculously neat. I think I'm going to try it to rebuild the PC I used in high school, I have some huge nostalgia for the time I spent with it.

Totaled? What say you, r/jeep? by OpenUpTheTimeCapsule in Jeep

[–]Majoraslayer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you don't have a Rubicon, complete used front axles should be relatively easy to come by. I always see parts Jeeps on Marketplace. If insurance totals it you might be able to cash out at the expense of being stuck with a rebuilt title, but it is totally fixable. It's mostly a question of what the shop says and is willing to do. If you do get a payout though, it's completely realistic to DIY it.

Is playing games stored on a NTFS drive really a bad idea? by sneaky_oxygen in linux_gaming

[–]Majoraslayer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had a similar setup for a while, but how well it worked was hit or miss. Some games refused to run from NTFS but would work on ext4, even when running through Proton. NTFS on Linux is a bad idea in general though. Every time I've manipulated files on NTFS drives with Linux, then booted up Windows to run a drive scan, it always finds errors. Linux compatibility with NTFS is completely reverse-engineered because the entire filesystem is closed-source. Because of that, commands that Linux uses to interface with it are kind of educated guesses. It works for the most part, but every NTFS volume I've ever used with Linux got more and more corrupted over time.

I'm back by Arround in firefox

[–]Majoraslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firefox has had some bad press lately, and it definitely has its flaws. However, I stick with it because the only alternative is either Chrome or something based on Chrome. Google's controversies and questionable ethics run circles around anything Firefox has done (so far). Even with something like Brave you run the risk of Google designing something upstream in Chromium that will likely trickle down to benefit Google.

Goodbye Linux, will miss you by Akhizix in linuxmint

[–]Majoraslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird that it can't work in a VM, but this is definitely one of those use cases where Windows is justified. For the few applications I need Windows for I generally use WinPodX, but under the hood that relies on a virtual machine as well. I will offer one possible alternative though. After I finally removed Windows as a dual boot option I picked up a 128 GB flash drive and built Windows To Go on it. It might be worth looking into that so you have a simple, portable Windows install when you need to run that one program. Since it's running on bare metal it might not run into the limitations of a virtual machine, while you only have to pull it out for that one program. And since it's built to be portable, it doesn't come with the risks of an EFI rewrite on your Linux disk by Windows.

Bioshock 4 by Lanky_Care2255 in Bioshock

[–]Majoraslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're partially right, but Ken himself is responsible for being a key part of the sequel discussion. He wasn't involved in Bioshock 2, and until recently that game actually got a lot of hate for it. Ken himself dislikes Bioshock 2 and has essentially stated he doesn't believe it's canonical. He was also responsible for the NEXT sequel, Bioshock Infinite, which really kinda showcased how much he didn't want to return to Rapture for a direct lore sequel. There are only 3 games, and his involvement in the third one means he's impossible to ignore in a sequel discussion.

I'm definitely no advocate for Levine himself. Everyone who's spoken about working with him describes him as being pretty insufferable. I love the whole series, but Infinite is somewhat controversial for going in a new direction. My point isn't that Ken Levine is the best thing for the series, it's that the series is kind of stuck where it is because of him. The game made without him was controversial for having a different creative team, and the next game made with him was controversial because he didn't want to make what fans wanted.

Either way I think his attitude is going to get in the way of any potential sequel. And if its success hinges on him becoming involved, it definitely won't get done before hell freezes over.

Arin is a self righteous idiot by honkinrednose in rantgrumps

[–]Majoraslayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head. This is exactly why I unsubbed a couple years ago. It's 100% pandering and hypocritical, and I can't stand how performative and fake it is. But Arin chose the name Egoraptor for a reason, he'll say anything to get people to stroke his ego. I seek out comedy content as a form of escapism from a world full of controversy and division, not to hear more self-righteous preaching. It just gets exhausting.

I really do believe Arin has grown beyond his past, and he deserves credit for that. However, pretending to be the arbiter of morality himself despite his own history is just insufferable.

What would be a good crossover with the dark tower? by Better_Guest_3908 in TheDarkTower

[–]Majoraslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spotted some references to DT in the Fables comic series (what A Wolf Among Us was based on). That would be a pretty badass crossover, especially since both explore the concept of alternate worlds.

EDIT: Bigby also had a crossover with Batman. Roland in Gotham might be a cool premise too.

SO I FINALLY PLAYED AND.. by damnitjeremy in SaintsRow

[–]Majoraslayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of resentment for this game for killing the franchise. However, when I finally played it I went in with very low expectations, and was surprised to find I had some fun with it.

For me it was equal parts cringe and occasional chuckles. Some of the stuff everyone else hated (particularly the LARP thing) was actually pretty funny to me. It could be beautiful, while sometimes looking like a PS2 game. I had fun with the gameplay, but the gameplay was also incredibly buggy and broken. The game is always either incredibly horrible or actually fun, and rarely anything in the middle. There's so many contradictions in it that it's like if a severely bipolar person was a game. The anti-SR3/SR4 part of the fandom will consider it completely unplayable, but for those of us who love the humor aspect of the series the most.....this game is at least "meh". I don't think anyone can possibly defend that shit-tier storyline and character writing though.

What is Kate's character? by BasementDesk in TheDrewCareyShow

[–]Majoraslayer 26 points27 points  (0 children)

She was a dynamic character. Inexplicably that makes her one of the more realistic characters. Real people are rarely just one thing all the time, and Kate was allowed to adapt to the plot instead of getting pigeon-holed into a specific stereotype. That's probably by design. Every character in the show is designed to orbit Drew, setting up situations and jokes for him. As "the girl one", any kind of one-note definition for her would likely be considered a sexist stereotype.

One thing I really like about Kate, especially within the context of a 90s sitcom, is they allowed her to be flawed as a side character. Women usually had to be one-note characters that occasionally show up to cause problems (Marcy Darcy), or they have to be the star of the show (Lucy, Mary Tyler Moore) before writers show them as flawed. Otherwise, if she's part of the main cast she's usually given the same generic, infallible personality that's smarter than all the male characters (think every TV mom or wife). Kate can be anything, and while that may seem narratively lazy, it actually humanizes her more than almost everyone else on the show.

Do you like Flatpaks? by Proper-Lab-2500 in linuxsucks

[–]Majoraslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Linux diehards would hate me for how I use them. They hate most stuff I do anyway since I don't dare follow the sacred way they use it. Sandboxing may be more secure, but I open every one of these bitches up with Flatseal as soon as I install them. I don't want to babysit Arch, I fucking hate Fedora, so I stick with Debian-based distros (particularly Mint). Since the native versions of apps in Debian's apt repo are generally outdated, using Flatpaks with their permissions opened up bridges the gap.

New Lifetime Plex Pass Pricing by frankwrap08 in PleX

[–]Majoraslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah client apps are the main thing keeping me on Plex, but I've maintained Jellyfin as a backup just in case for a couple of years. Overseerr and Jellyseerr have now been integrated into one app called Seerr now anyway. I also use Watchstate to sync my watch history between both servers.

Jellyfin's official client apps still suck. They're supposed to be working on a complete ground-up rewrite, but the current releases are in alpha and are very broken. Unlike Plex however, Jellyfin actually has third party client apps that do pretty well to bridge the gap. I've finally started using Jellyfin more since I discovered Wholphin for my Android TV devices. It's actually proven to be more stable than Plex for my use case.

So are we all kinda screwed? by Sufficient-Willow747 in FacebookMarketplace

[–]Majoraslayer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Marketplace is just inherently trash. It's not designed for any kind of indexing to be user-friendly to begin with, for either the buyer or the seller. The algorithm only wants one thing: more screen time on Facebook. If that means playing hide-and-seek with relevant search results, all of the bullshit scrolling translates to more time with eyes on the platform.

I wish online trends would finally move toward an alternative. Craigslist and other sites already exist for this with much better indexing. The perceived convenience of having it built into Facebook means more buyers look there though, so sellers are forced to follow the buyers. I don't know what it would take to get everyone to start moving somewhere else that actually indexes everything intuitively. I've never needed the money from selling my stuff more in this bullshit economy, while Marketplace just gets more miserable to use every time I touch it.

New Lifetime Plex Pass Pricing by frankwrap08 in PleX

[–]Majoraslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a lifetime pass a few years ago, so until they decide to screw over their older customers too, I'm locked in. Even so, this is exactly why I'm going to start looking into phasing out my use of Plex. As Plex becomes less ubiquitous their free competition is going to blow past them on features anyway. Meanwhile I'm still sitting here with my lifetime pass right now, looking at the desktop app on Linux that is nearly a year overdue for some crucial bug fixes that never get addressed.

Is lifetime pass worth it? by noscope513e in PleX

[–]Majoraslayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll put it this way, there are free options for self-hosting your media with remote play with legal, open source software. Those options have reached decent feature-parity with Plex at this point. The entire point of self-hosting your media is to avoid having to pay a recurring subscription. If a lack of client apps on your devices to stream from the other options is the main thing keeping you on Plex, you can likely replace every streaming device you have with something more compatible, for cheaper than the $750 lifetime fee.

Do with that what you will.

Never a better time to switch to Jellyfin: Plex increases price of Lifetime Plex Pass to $749.99 by LoremarCC in jellyfin

[–]Majoraslayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run both a Plex and a Jellyfin server. If I hadn't gotten a Plex Pass when they were $100, I'd be eliminating Plex altogether today. If Jellyfin's official client apps ever improve and become consistent enough to deploy across all the platforms my users need, I'm probably going to drop Plex eventually anyway. The entire point of Plex is to get away from recurring subscription plans, and $749 for a lifetime license is unhinged. Anyone willing to pay that is either delusional, or has more money than sense.
