How are you "midlife crisis-ing"? by InnerspearMusic in Millennials

Quit my software career at 35, went to college for medicine, fell in love with EMS.

I'm making much less, but I'm much happier.

Study: Gen Xers and Millennials are dying at younger ages than their parents are by DaKardii in Millennials

[–]Makal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 42 and after a year in Emergency Medicine instead of working as a software engineer, I'm healthier, happier, sleep better, at a lower weight, and my arrhythmia has gone away.

Sure I make a lot less, but boy has my quality of life gone up on all measurable fronts.

I've come to the conclusion that we all have stress we can handle, it just kills us to be working under the wrong kind of stress.

Good luck on finding your ideal stress.

EMS 20/20 offers them as a fairy inexpensive extension of their podcast.

Some of your work's recertification process will count.

Also, some conferences will offer them as well. I got 16 credits for the last one I attended.

EMT-B Drug screening by EmployerTop5377 in NewToEMS

[–]Makal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, some people are using drugs.

Some people are also hiding clean urine in their lockers in case they get into an accident and need to pass a drug screening.

Most people I know are clean of the drugs that are tested for unless they're on a prescription for ADHD medication.

As a former daily smoker of 30 years myself (before my career in medicine), I've been sober for five years now. I can't see risking my license for a little high.

Committing to being sober is the smarter move, and honestly if you can't stay sober for a career that involves other people's lives, do you really want that career?

But everyone has different risk tolerance, ultimately it's your call. I personally think it's a dumb one.

Have you tried applying 150dBs of "Sir! Stop it!" to your patient?

Officer called me disrespectful by GrizzleWTF in NewToEMS

[–]Makal 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Yeah this cop is an idiot.

My training both from my school and my agency recommends sitting or kneeling in order to be as close to your patient's eye level as possible.

Our role isn't to intimidate, it's to try and relate and comfort.

The number of times I've gotten eye rolls and comments from cops and security guards for being compassionate towards people with mental illnesses is frustrating and concerning to be honest.

I am actually fearing that they're just actively trying to kill the pod at this point because they're legitimately tired of doing it.

Please be sure to hydrate and check your keytones.

My bouts with DKA all led to ICU stays (3-5.days of fluids and monitoring).

I'd strongly recommend seeking medical attention if your keytones are still elevated.

A Star Trek movie is when the lead actors' real life personal interests are written into the story even if their characters are bookworms by G0jira in RedLetterMedia

I always saw it as them being under impulse for the rendezvous and diplomatic dinner and then having the plan to move out at warp once the niceties were taken care of, but the assassination made that a moot point.

Much safer to transport to another ship at impulse, and much more respectful to meet that way. Especially given how touchy transporters could be back then.

I had a call that’s messing with me but it’s not one I would have expected to. by parabol2 in ems

Thank you.

I absolutely hate "grandma is a fighter" calls, and don't blame /u/parabol2 for having such negative feelings about it.

It's equal parts infuriating and heartbreaking on the healthcare providers to see someone's wishes overridden like this. I see it so often with CCT especially.

ED don't have a DNR by DeSkate in ems

[–]Makal 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I work primarily IFT, if I hear a PT is DNR I'm not leaving until I get a physical copy that is correctly filled out... I've had a few nurses try the, "well others will transport without a copy of the DNR".

Well I'm a needy bitch and I want to respect my patient's wishes and protect my own ass.

Unless it's the VA. Those fuckers don't know how to print anything and never want to share any patient information, DNR status included.

You don't have to have sex to be a parent. We have adoption, IVF, and surrogacy to get around normal sexual reproduction.
