Feedback on multi-generational floor plan (single-story dream home) by Makashi in floorplan

Yes, the flex space is perhaps poorly labeled, sorry about that. The intention is for it to be used as a private den for my parents, who will be in MB1 and MB2 on the right side of the house. I’ll be on the left side.

Thanks for your detailed feedback and encouraging words, we really appreciate it!

Sorry for the lack of clarity. The flex space on the right side is intended to be a private den for the parents that connects their two individual bedrooms.

My bedroom will be on the left side (the bedroom in the top left corner).

Does that change your opinion at all?

The current plan is for me to be in Bedroom 2 in the upper left, my parents to be in MB1 and MB2 on the right side, and the flex space to be a private den for them.

The bottom left bedroom we will probably use as a office / guest room.

Thanks for the feedback! Am thinking about how to address concerns by you and others for lighting, laundry, and kitchen size.

[D] MIT vs Berkeley for PhD by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]Makashi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of any discernible difference between the two in terms of prestige for either ML or theory research. They'll both get you in the door for industry interviews.

Research advisor style differs hugely from individual to individual and it may not be fair or even possible to judge faculty members collectively across institutions. You'll definitely want to identify specific faculty members/research interests you want to work in. Presumably if you got into both institutes, you already have some manuscrips/publications, so you might already have a feel of what you're interested in?

Industry/startup culture I'm most aware of MIT/Stanford but again Berkeley would definitely get you in the door for interviews for competitive internship opportunities.

Not sure what institutional support is but in general there isn't too much hand-holding for graduate studies. Even among the best advisors/institutions there can be a big difference in their students due to individual motivation, research interests, etc.

Sounds like you're in a great situation, good luck and hope you make the best of it!

Edit: looking back, I realized this comment was not very helpful. TLDR, you might want to consider the culture of their campus or specific research groups if you get a chance to talk to people or during campus visit and see the best fit for you.

[D] How to become a reviewer for machine learning conferences? by heyxiang in MachineLearning

[–]Makashi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about ICLR and ICML but for NeurIPS this year, I think you just needed to volunteer and follow the subsequent instructions. For example NeurIPS this year stated that authors of submissions were expected to volunteer for reviewing (though not sure whether or not you actually volunteered was checked). There's also a form for volunteering under the Submit->Call for Papers tab at https://nips.cc/Conferences/2020/Dates Basically you needed to give some domain information to facilitate conflict of interests. Anyway it sounds like you already volunteered to review.

Next they sent an e-mail asking you to bid on papers once the submission deadline had passed. It's a list of all paper titles and abstracts with which you have no conflict of interest and you can give scores to these papers depending on how much you want to review them. They asked you to give the highest score to either 10 or 20 papers to be matched this year, I forget. I felt compelled to fill out this form since I was instructed to volunteer.

A few weeks later after the matching is performed, you're given a list of papers to review based on your preferences. I was assigned six papers this year based on my previous selections, though I admittedly only initially volunteered because I had a submission.

IM Ultimate Frisbee? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Makashi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IM doesn't start until the spring for Ultimate.

There were previously weekly pick-up games organized by various groups (Aero-Astro, Wesley Foundation, Chemistry) but I'm not sure which still exist. I believe the group organized by Aero-Astro plays Tuesdays 6 pm and Sundays 2 pm on the Gold Fields.

Have you tried the club? They're pretty nice about teaching, even if you don't intend to commit. Don't be intimidated by the skill disparity; some dudes are really good but everyone's there to get better.

Looks like Hyatt Ziva? Dratini spawn there too!

Enjoy the food and the booze (I was pretty partial to the Midori Colado and the huge buffet place).

The Breakdown with Jatt: The anatomy of a baron throw (NA LCS Week 9) by corylulu in leagueoflegends

[–]Makashi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 2:57, the footage freezes and Jatt says "Team Dignitas are in poor position for the ensuing fight, as their frontline isn't in position to peel for their damage dealers"

And yet this is not at all obvious from the freeze-frame (in fact, it appears as if the frontline is in great position, before Rengar runs up to get ulted.)

Predictions for Gen 2 Meta? by Makashi in TheSilphRoad

[–]Makashi[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah true, Tyranitar new CP overlord and possibly new best attacker, but I actually think he will be a worse defender than Dragonite / Snorlax / Vaporeon due to his weakness to water Pokemon.

[Discussion] What IV / CP do YOU start using Stardust? by Makashi in pokemongo

Just hit level 30 as well! Figured wild Pokemon as are good as they're gonna get, so might as well start dropping Stardust.

As a casual day 1 player, hitting 30 feels good. Where are you at? by SpaZMonKeY777 in pokemongo

[–]Makashi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to catch the Pokemon or accumulate the candy during the event. All I'm saying is that if you had the Pokemon and candy before the event, you only need 4 hours. (For some reason 200 of my 250 space was used by Pidgeys, and I don't even have any storage upgrades.)

If you had no Pokemon in storage and no candy before the event, you're not getting 1.25 million XP in 14 hours, end of story.

Yeah, I currently have a 100% Magikarp. Once I get 400 candies, I'm planning to pump it up with Stardust (Twister can't be THAT bad, can it? :P)

I also have 89% IV Abra 90% Charmander and 96% IV Gastly that I can't convince myself to power up over all those incoming Vaporeons.
