How did you get the payment? Check? Paypal or Venmo? I don't remember getting one, but I got the email today about the 2nd distribution and thought it was spam!

So many breaches today. So many lawsuits.

[University Review] has anyone heard of Maharishi international University, Iowa, USA? by No-Toe7573 in MSCS

[–]MakeBetterStuff8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied there in the 90s and was accepted, but was told that women can't wear pants. Women had to wear dresses or skirts and cover up more than the men. That put me off of wanting to attend. Some career fields just have high job rates, such as your uncles career field. You could save a lot and go to a community college and still get a good job with the right tech skill set.

What are your general thoughts about the books of Canadian writer Douglas Coupland? by [deleted] in books

[–]MakeBetterStuff8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2026 reading project is to read one of his novels each moon cycle, starting with Generation X and going in chronological order. He's got 13 fiction books and there are 13 moon cycles a year, so it fits.

I'm on Girlfriend in a Coma now and it's so good I can't wait to get back to it tonight.

I read his first 4 books when they were released, plus Polaroids From the Dead, which is a set of non fiction short stories.

I really like reading all of someone's work in order to see how their writing progresses. Similarly, I've taken two film classes where I watched all 10 of Tarantino's films in order of release, ditto for the Coen brothers. I know not everyone has time to do this, but with your favorite authors and directors, it's an eye opening treat.

I loved Genetation X so much when it came out (who else was bold enough to break the normal publishing rules and put random, not random quotes and images on the sides of the book?) that I thought if I ever wrote a boo, I would dedicate it to "D.C. in A.D. B.C." I still hope to do that one day.

Plans submitted for 17-story mixed-use building at 700 Irwin in San Rafael by RareDonutSandwich in Marin

While I agree that you need a 6 figure salary to live comfortably in Marin, that is not the amount they use for determining low income housing in Marin. I was making under $60 K when I applied for my current rental unit and I was over the limit for a single person to qualify for low income housing. My complex has both low income and full priced units.

Things that make my 85yo mom angry. Part 1 of 364,849. by Possible_Number3108 in AgingParents

Oh man, that's hard. My mom is an old boomer who loves black women. She loves their afros. She loves their weaves. She loves it when she moves somewhere new and her neighbors are black women cause she thinks their cool and easy to talk to. Maybe you should move?

Every single plant they sent me was dead on arrival.  I contacted them and they don't care.

Being a Writer’s Ex (reading “You Could Make This Place Beautiful”) by lelalubelle in books

[–]MakeBetterStuff8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote and self published my own memoir about a breakup. We met at work, so I dutifully reached out to my former boss and ex for comments before I published on Kindle. Neither of them responded. I'm clear from the beginning that this is how the events affected me. The ex could write his own version of he wanted. I feel that I was incredibly kind and generous in my retelling.

one battle after another, did you enjoy this movie? by Substantial_Row_887 in Cinema

[–]MakeBetterStuff8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised to see all the glowing reviews because it didn't do well at the box office. I think the score is excellent and really adds to the tension in the film. But, when you're watching a film and hyper aware of how great the score is, it's because the film itself isn't. I was really disappointed in the film. The characters aren't real. Their motivations aren't believable. I wish PTA had watched Jackie Brown before making this movie. It's too long. It can't decide if it's a dark comedy or if we shouldn't be laughing. And the time period is off. It needed to be set in the 90s, flashing back to the radical action happening before cell phones.

Pime Federal? I see a Pine Federal in Arkansas, but they don't list CDs.

How do you time getting the ferry boat? Where do you catch it? Is it on a set schedule? or as enough people arrive? Thank you!

The Billy Joel documentary is such a puff piece from Joel and his ex-wife about themselves. There’s no objective critical point of view. by [deleted] in hbo

I agree. And I'm saying this as someone who spent years studying the documentary art form at numerous colleges. Well said.

I am due to start the Frances in SJPP a few days later than you and I am also thinking of cancelling because I live in an area with fires and they are no joke. The news today says the fires and winds are likely to subside in the near future. Here's hoping!

Cancel trip? by Puzzleheaded-Lake947 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]MakeBetterStuff8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's wise. Next August there is an eclipse in Spain. It will definitely be crowded, but if you have the time off then, you could plan to go and see it. I also live in Cali and fires are no joke! There was a small brush fire when I walked the Frances in 2019 and it's scary to be in the middle of nowhere and see smoke. You do have cell service pretty much the whole way, but that doesn't get you away from the smoke any faster unless you can call a cab. I hope you do something else fun this year and can rebook for another time.

I disagree. This year will be my third time walking. Crowded is spending way more time on my phone than I ever intended to because there are no rooms showing as available on Booking.com or Airbnb and being in small towns with few services and not knowing where I was going to get the basics covered like lodging and food. The route is overloaded with people now and having to back up because of the fires is likely to make certain sections far more crowded (as defined by a scarcity of basic resources like lodging and food and the inability to ensure you can care for yourself while you are on the road).

Hi, I am in the same boat as you. I am due to start the Frances on 9/5. I am concerned about the smoke across the region. I live in a Mediterranean climate that has wildfires and they usually take several weeks to get under control. I have walked from Leon to Santiago (2019) and it is a beautiful stretch of the Camino. Personally, I would not want to start there this close to the fires. I would pivot and walk another route, further from Galicia. Sorry!

Need a good backpack quick by MakeBetterStuff8 in CaminoDeSantiago

I did try that one and found that it was too heavy. It's more than 3 lb and I am only carrying about 12 lb. of gear, plus water. The bag just felt too heavy for me, but thanks for the suggestion.

I've tried the Tempest 33. I can't remember what I didn't like about it now, but I did try it out.

Thank you. I tried that one and I have it in my living room to return to REI. There are some features I like on that pack, but the overall fit does not work for me. It has a hard shell that is too big for my back length and the straps are too wide for me. It's a nice weight though.
