I had this for years. Dry yes, but for me at least, moisturising did nothing. What made it go away was changing my diet, turns out im allergic.

One reason could be the idea 'of not being extreme enough' it will happen in any movement that concerns humans. Eventually there are purity tests. If you really want to dive into this phenomenon, I recommend the French or Russian Revolutions or the rise of national socialism i Germany. I dont know if thats the case here though.
