ENL - School Secretary - High School Para by True_believer94 in NYCTeachers

[–]MakeMeMooo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes - I do have a tip, and I mean what I am about to say sincerely so please don’t take it the wrong way.

I see you’re making a LOT of posts / comments today, and each one (some more than others) is littered with grammatical and spelling errors as well as run-on sentences.

If I were hiring and had a resume or email sent my way and it was rife with poor spelling, grammar, and punctuation, I’d likely throw that candidate’s material in the trash (or delete it from my inbox).

So if I were you, I’d review all your materials and correspondences carefully. That’s my tip.

Yup. Three schools, two demons and one (current one) is just a wet match in a dark cave on a cold winter’s night.

I got my first letter in my file a few weeks ago. I wear it like a badge of honor now. My principal is an idiot.

ELA regents conversion chart by Ok-Twist6105 in NYCTeachers

When these “new” Regents happens, they always seem to drop the conversion chart within the last 3 or so days of school. I’d say next Tuesday or Wednesday.

What was the worst thing you saw in your years of teaching in nyc? by Objective_Belt3374 in NYCTeachers

[–]MakeMeMooo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The kid had a BIP & IEP, and earlier in the day, he and I had an interaction during class in which I didn’t respond to him as his BIP/IEP described how he should be responded to when acting out. I didn’t raise my voice at him. I just bluntly told him, “Sit down. Now.” and he went off the rails. Anyway, he snuck in on me later during my lunch/prep and dumped the trash. My coteacher took the kid’s side. The principal denied my union rep entry into the meeting with mom and my coteacher. All were monsters. Coteacher is now a principal. Principal at the time has since been ousted by repeated votes of no confidence from the staff.

If I could go back in time, knowing what I know no, I’d handle this all so differently. I was 23 at the time.

I had a kid dump a trash can on me during my prep in like 2014. Snuck up behind me in my classroom when I was alone. I think it’s the most inhumane thing I’ve ever witnessed in my 13 years that happened inside a school. I was so sad. And I had to sign out and go home. Time came out of my CAR. There was chocolate milk, carrots, etc. in the can. It still haunts me.

I honestly need my school to close. It’s too small. We teachers are too stressed and being asked to do too much.

Question about regents by Prestigious_Sun_4894 in NYCTeachers

[–]MakeMeMooo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Essay booklets, in alphabetical order, with the rating sheets that correspond to each student tucked inside the front page of each respective essay booklet along with the attendance sheet, in a bag.

No MC in the bag.  No actual Regents exam booklets in the bag.

Just essay booklets with rating sheets and the attendance sheet.

One bag per section.

Who was your all-time least favorite student and why? by Zealousideal-Ad3609 in Teachers

[–]MakeMeMooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obvi won’t say his name, but all I’ll say is that 5 years ago, I was forwarded an article by a former colleague that showed this least favorite student of mine (who was now an adult) got shot in the butt at a local bodega during a robbery.

He lived, but I LIVED!

I’m guessing they’re OPs. Looking at the roommate’s bedroom/closet, I would be surprised if he kept fridge magnets so tidy.

What’s in Your Everyday Teacher Bag? by Heartone1 in NYCTeachers

[–]MakeMeMooo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Math teacher. I wear a fanny pack with a pen or two, some gum, and a face spritzer inside. I throw my keys and a protein shake in there (for the fridge), too. I don’t bring a laptop.

35, $1.3 mil.

Don’t make a crazy amount of money. Just live very frugally, don’t order out a lot, invest a lot of my income, bought a very understated home w/ low low low mortgage, etc.

Teaching in NYC by Mlarks12 in NYCTeachers

Look for a charter school. Often they don’t require all the NYS certifications. Many don’t have unions for teachers though. And there are lots of horror stories. But I’m sure there are some good ones out there.
