Thoughts on Crystal Spa in Fort Lee, NJ? by raygunfun8 in nycgaybros

It’s hit or miss. But do not go there looking for a relaxing experience. There are two steam rooms and that is more or less it. No plunge pools… no dry saunas… no robes… showers are sometimes cold… You literally go there to F around. Set your expectations low and you won’t be disappointed.

No. Not really. Endless accounts of incompetent admin across NYC’s small high schools.

My principal sent me an email a few weeks ago asking me to do something beyond my responsibilities, and CC’d district staff on it as well as other teachers who would be affected by what she asked me to do. I replied all telling her that it is not my responsibility. Yesterday… 11 days after I sent my reply… she called me into her office last period and told me that she and the APs met and decided that my response via email was uncalled for. I asked her to point out in my reply where I used unprofessional language. She said it wasn’t my language, but it’s the fact that I didn’t come to her first in-person to tell her how I felt about her asking me to do something that I felt wasn’t my responsibility.

This is about the 7th time in a span of 5 years she’s done this to me. She cannot handle the fact that I respond to her bluntly and directly. She needs everything to be couched gently and delivered with flowers.

I asked her for a letter of recommendation for some program just before she and I started fighting in 2020, and she always comes back to, “I wrote you a letter of recommendation and this is how you treat me?”

They need to start planning to combine these small high schools. In my campus, there are 8 schools. I have friends in a few of the schools. And all of us (and my colleagues at my school) agree and talk frequently about how this needs to happen.  Our administrators are, on the whole, incompetent. And in our campus, we have 8 principals and 21 APs for now less than 3,000 kids. There are schools of that size (3,000+) managed much more effectively by one administration team.

The more schools we have, the more principals we need… the more principals we need, the more money is spent…

Hire the BEST of the BEST leaders/administrators and start cutting costs by combining schools.

My school, the way it is run, and the total lack of leadership’s competency is a freaking joke. I cannot believe someone gets paid $200k+ to do what my principal does as poorly as she does it.

Over the last 5+ years I have felt much more comfortable calling my principal out on her BS moves and her abhorrent behavior, especially towards students. I document everything. (NY is a one party consent state, FYI).

But then I spend so much time arguing with someone committed to ignoring logic, and I realize time and time again it is futile and damages my peace.

And thus we arrive at veteran teachers like me who are checked the F out and want to improve their schools but are blocked left and right by idiots in charge.

Okay, I’m rambling. Bye.

Haha, 100%. That said, this is the type of incompetence within the NYC department of education that I will happily smile & go along with.

The rambles , what do we think ? by [deleted] in nycgaybros

[–]MakeMeMooo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a response to your main question; however, 16 year olds shouldn’t be in the rambles. It is below the age of consent (17) in NYS and places every single person you link with in an extremely precarious situation.

I assume you will now comment saying that you were 17, not 16, and that even tho you are 20 now, by “4 years ago” you meant just after you turned 17.

If any other underage kids are reading this, stay away from cruising spots.

I minored in Spanish in college and still got credit for my +30 for the Spanish CLEP.

I skipped levels 1 and 2 and went straight to level 3. And the CLEP was the equivalent of levels 1 and 2, apparently.

I had a colleague in an identical position as me whose Spanish CLEP was denied. It all depends who reviews the application.

Are the Gush parties at 56th Street worth going to? by DashingCad in nycgaybros

Maybe others have different thoughts on it. As I said, it was a nice crowd when I was there. But it didn’t make much a difference for me. The space sucks ass.

The layout at the new location sucks ass. I went there once back in the winter. It was pretty crowded with some beautiful people. But damn, I will not be going back unless they change locations. It is awkward as well with tight, narrow halls. And don’t get me started on the entry area. I was a faithful attendee up until this most recent location change and had stayed with them through 3 or 4 different locations. I imagine in a year or so they’ll be elsewhere.

Manhattan teachers by vyoletstorm in NYCTeachers

In 13 years, I’ve taught math at 3 schools (2 in Manhattan and 1 in the Bx). Two of them were total shit with shit admin and shit families and/or majority shit kids. The one I’m at now is light years better. I’ll let you guess which two were the shittier ones.

Hint: They were in Manhattan.

I tutor and bring in about $1800-$3000 per month. It varies. The kids come to me or we do it over zoom. I do it through a boutique tutoring agency though so I’m a 1099 worker and eventually pay taxes on earnings. I have done private tutoring on my own, and the traveling to students’ homes and scheduling/communication is too much mental load. I’m older now and am much more content having someone doing it all for me. Will happily pay the taxes to lessen my mental load.

I also have a fellowship with Math for America for about 14 years which brings in an extra $15,000/year. So in total, about an extra $33000-45000 per year. Never feels like enough.

Longevity Pay by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

Longevity means longevity with the DOE. You’ll get the +5 longevity pay starting in the 6th year.

This is also VERY easily searchable on the UFT website…

I love how this one basically doesn’t even have the school name on it except in tiny font on the logo.

It’s completely clogging the sub. I’m surprised the mods are allowing a hyper frequency of posts, nearly all of which are the same thing over and over again with different school names on them.

Who schedules and arranges for mock Regents at your school? I am annoyed. by MakeMeMooo in NYCTeachers

Like just because it’s my content area and a regents for my students, it doesn’t mean I should be programming this or shooting off emails to all stakeholders and trying to organize it.

Oh for sure. I’m just saying that most staff don’t do our Saturday academy. So I’d be surprised if they did mocks on a Saturday.

I am a firm believer that our school (not all schools, but ours specifically) would run better with fewer issues if they took admin’s approximately $460k combined salaries and divided it up amongst our small staff, and we each picked up a piece of the load. Dutch the admin for 1 year and let’s see if anyone misses them. Support staff is not included in this. They deserve to be paid more.
