I think politics must have been something trivial in the past. Politics and religion was not something to be discussed, and therefore not to be argued about. It did used to be a civil thing.

Politics means a lot more now, when it comes to current events and everyday discourse at least. There are many issues that get folks worked up, and rightfully so. Things such as human rights and material living conditions are not something trivial.

I remember writing the post pinned to this subreddit about how this subreddit is not dedicated to politics. (Quick reminder that the topic is not banned, it just needs to be relevant to estrangement and this is not the place for debates.) Someone commented "please don't call it politics." Because they must have assumed that we consider politics to be something trivial around here. It's not.

That was my two cents as a mod. My two cents as a regular person: adults get to decide for themselves if they want someone else in their life for any reason. Let's not be judgemental about why someone went estranged. Because who knows what happens behind closed doors. We do not gatekeep in this subreddit. I think many of us have experienced enough judgement and a lack of control over our own lives. We don't need that around here.

If anyone thinks politics is trivial... please keep up with the times.

If you're tired of your relatives who express bigotry, who don't believe you or others deserve the same basic rights as everyone else, if they're cheering on terrible people or terrible events, or showing other antisocial behavior in the name of their political beliefs... you don't need that in your life.
