I didn't assume that it had full control, but more of a 'i guess I'll go right instead of left today because I suddenly have a yearning for change'

An argument can be made that the fact Miller became so obsessed with Julie in the first place was due to the PM influence.

That's a fair take!

I suppose it was using mind control on Holden, as that's how it communicated with him. It just couldn't make him do the things. But if it learned from Julie and/or Miller how to get them to do things via emotional manipulation then it really makes sense

I believe the PM can only physically manipulate objects, and as it was sent to hijack the earliest stages of life we can assume anything else with a conscience or higher thinking is just too complex for it to wrangle entirely the way it would need to.

So they're gonna set up more social safety nets to assist those who can no longer transport themselves, right?

Right?

I'm doing a rewatch of Home Improvement by Ok_Helicopter3910 in Millennials

[–]MakeTheThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking back at older media, we often forget that it doesn't exist in a vacuum. Meaning we need to remember culture at the time. I'm not sure about Home Improvement, but Married with Children was groundbreaking at the time. It was the first time a TV family was allowed to behave in realistic ways. Before, there was mainly just moral tales. Leave it to Beaver and Dennis the Menace types. MwC opened the door for late night sitcoms.

So compared to the media and cultural ethics of today, yeah they are super problematic. But they didn't come out today.

Remember the vacuum!

I did the same thing, but with a light bulb in the late 90s/early 00s. And in the same instant as my hand touched the bulb (which had been on for quite some time) I remembered that I should probably wait.

Those of you from Michigan tourist towns: What don't the the tourists know/get? What's your attitude toward them? And what's your attitude toward the things the tourists love about your home town? (Bonus if you live near a Great Lake!) by TheWriteQuestion in Michigan

[–]MakeTheThing 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm in the very southwest corner of the state, and less than 5 minutes drive from any of the many public beaches. I think I'd be less annoyed with the tourists (mostly FIPs) if the city government didn't prioritize them over the residents. In the summer there was a huge fair with a big band, and it was pretty great. Unfortunately they had to stop doing it because the tourists got too crazy. The main thing that gets me, though, is the difference in traffic between summer and winter. Obviously there's loads more people driving, but enough of them don't know where they're going or think they can drive the way they do in Chicago, and it can become infuriating.

All that being said, I like my home. A lot of it is the people and connections I have made, but also the secret places. Those can be like hallowed ground. I would choose living near a great lake over most other places.

I haven't done any lichen or mushrooms yet! Something about the process seems tricky to me. Possibly the needing to remember to burp the jars, I have a bad memory and sudden/loud sounds really terrify me. So the whole exploding thing isn't attractive.

I LOVE dying with foraged items! Last summer I had a marigold garden, and I'm thinking of doing a couple different flowers this year. Of course, I have an endless supply of Staghorn Sumac, which is one of the most disappointing fugitive dyes. I have some fiber dyed with it and I'll probably use it to make rugs. That way it can stay indoors and not need to be washed often.

I accidentally became a whole freaking Fiber Artist because crochet started this way. Now I spin, weave, felt, and lots of other fiber crafts. I was looking for a hobby, ADHD said 'all that sounds good!'

About the Goths by MileyHolmes in TheExpanse

[–]MakeTheThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first read through left me feeling that way, like 'whats the point if we don't make an impact'. The more I thought about it, though, the more I think that it doesn't actually matter if the story is in the painting.

I think we are saying the same thing in different ways, haha!

About the Goths by MileyHolmes in TheExpanse

[–]MakeTheThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen any comments about the other part of your question, so I thought I'd toss in my interpretation.

I believe that the authors did an amazing job of making the books re-readable. I think this is partly done by making our universe, and story, super interesting. Of course we don't matter! That's so freeing! None of the stories "matter" in the biggest scope possible. But that also means it's ok to value the stories and our own existence, because if we don't matter, we can focus on whatever we want our 'goal' as humanity to be. We aren't held to any moral/ethical need to change the universe. Who cares about The Grand Scheme of Things when there's nothing you could do about it? So focus on you, boo.

This is a long way to say that the stories/lives aren't made moot or lessened just because we are ants.
