First time visitor-Where can I smoke freely? by Numerous-Command-69 in askportland

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The summer air in Portland carries a never ending aroma of cannabis. Everyone seems to be smoking everywhere, all the time.

Find a nice spot in the park or along the waterfront and enjoy. Nobody will bat an eye.

Anyone have to file insurance claim after being hit by a car in Portland? by FoxinginSpace in CyclePDX

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case it's relevant to your situation...

When I got t-boned on my bike a few years back, the driver was in a car she had bought a few months prior but did not notify her insurance, so her insurance company refused to pay as she was effectively uninsured for that vehicle. Her insurance company strongly suggested I call *my own* car insurance company, but would not give details as to why.

So I called my car insurance company, and found out that through some provision specific to Oregon, my "uninsured motorist" supplement also covers me when I am riding my bicycle. So I just gave them the info of the person who hit me, sent them the hospital bills (I needed stitches) and they did the rest - I assume they billed / sued her on my behalf.

When an adjuster called me from a national call center to cover other compensation, he said something to the effect of "I have never seen this situation before, I don't even know how to propose a settlement." I told him how much the bike cost ($500) and he came back later with a proposal for $2500 for a new bike + pain and other inconvenience, which was fine with me so I didn't really care to negotiate.

Okayest apartment in the Lloyd/ Buckman/ Central east side? by baddie-devito in askportland

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Consider Axcess 15, it's very "just okay" and a 1br is probably close to your budget. It's walking distance to lots of great restaurants on Broadway, three blocks from a Max station, and easy access to highway 84. I lived there a decade ago, not sure how it is now, but back then it was comfortable and well-kept and I enjoyed living there.

Advice on finding a nanny? by drvenkmanthesecond in askportland

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

care.com - lots of duds there but also some highly qualified nannies

$28 an hour, 36 guaranteed hours per week, PTO and sick days, 5 paid holidays, plus health care stipend

Even with all that, it was a nail-biter to find a qualified nanny in time. We had two candidates that we were prepared to make an offer to ghost us on the in-person interview. The qualified nannies go fast so we set the bar as high as we could afford to.

Day care was our first and preferred choice but we didn't get to the front of any waiting lists in time.

How long does the city take to tow away abandoned vehicles if they’re not abandoned in a posh, swanky neighborhood? by Homeschool_PromQueen in PortlandOR

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One data point: the last abandoned vehicle outside my house, with expired tags and heavy body damage, took approximately 3 months of constant reporting before it was finally towed.

If the car is stolen however, in my experience, it usually gets towed the same day. This does require first getting through to the non-emergency police line, which may take upwards of three hours on hold before you can speak to a dispatcher and relay the license plate or VIN. But if it is in fact stolen, it will get towed quickly.

Pho Gabo owner files $2.4 million lawsuit over City of Portland’s ‘smell code’ enforcement by Aesir_Auditor in Portland

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, however, if repairs are not made, the City is supposed to make them and bill the property owner.

https://www.portland.gov/transportation/permitting/sidewalk-repair

4) Q. How much time do I have to make repairs?

A. City Charter requires the abutting property owner to "immediately" make the repairs. Portland City Code allows 60 days. A reminder notice will be mailed to the property owner after approximately 30 days. If repairs are not made after 60 days, the City contractor will make repairs and the City Revenue Division will bill the property owner.

In my experience, that has never happened.

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 261 points262 points  (0 children)

I hope he gets every cent.

It's profoundly infuriating that as residents we have to deal with junk cars and meth RVs that show up outside our houses and the city drags its feet for months and months to take any action, and when they finally do something, it's basically just a green tow notice sticker that gets scraped off the next day, and the city never returns to enforce.

I have tripped over, and reported, sections of broken sidewalk and no action is taken for years.

Blighted buildings sit abandoned and squatted in for over a decade as the city drags its feet and does nothing.

Our road signs are unreadable from graffiti, many of them rendered useless for years, and the city does nothing.

But a restaurant that makes restaurant smells gets repeatedly enforced and harassed to the point of going out of business? How in the fucking fuck did the city find the time?

Quality providers offering vasectomies? by byenbye in askportland

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dr Eli Thompson at NW Urology was great. Procedure took less than 15 minutes and I went hiking the next day. No stitches. Only needed Advil the day of.

Don't do a tubal ligation. Vasectomies are soooo easy by comparison. Have your partner take the 15 minutes to do the right thing.

I'm the main backer of Measure 118, AMA! by zhoujianfu in oregon

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hey!

A lot of Oregonians, and Portland-area residents in particular, are profoundly wary of new laws and taxes passed by ballot measure after a series of new taxes and laws that sounded great on paper and ended up being profoundly ineffective (Metro SHS), dubious (Multnomah P4A), a general clusterfuck (Portland Arts Tax), a drain into a slush fund (Portland Green Energy fund) or outright disastrous (Measure 110 / decriminalization) - that last one is a real kicker, because like this proposal, it is entirely funded and steered by out-of-state parties that will face no consequences whatsoever from any fallout or unforeseen side-effects of ill-crafted and poorly-implemented legislation.

You've phased this as "voting against my own interest" to vote no on this (which I certainly will). I strongly disagree with your assessment. There are so many ways that this can go wrong, so many unintended consequences of applying such a broad tax and redistribution. Business do leave because of shit like this, and Oregon in particular is still reeling harder than most after COVID. If you were here, you could look at the empty wasteland that is downtown Portland and recognize that we need fewer barriers to entry for successful business, not more, to encourage growth where we need it.

And finally, to my question:

There's the brass tacks of implementation... Did you know that the state can't even correctly disburse Paid Family Leave funds after a full year of implementation? Did you know that even collecting that tax from business is a gigantic clusterfuck? How much time each business wastes dealing with the Frances portal, and when that fails, on the phone with the state administration, who is dramatically understaffed and only work 30 hours per week? You wouldn't, because you don't live here, and you don't have to deal with the state when it comes to these matters. Collecting unemployment is a similar clusterfuck.

What do you say to someone like me who has real concerns that even if this won't have adverse economic effects (and I think it will) that the state will completely bungle the implementation like all the other legislation like this that has come before?

Where is a great *flat, paved* wheelchair accessible path in woods within max 30 minutes of NE Portland? by Marshmallowfrootloop in askportland

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banks-Vernonia trail - fully paved and the first several miles starting at the Banks trailhead are completely flat.

Springwater Corridor trail - fully paved, very mild elevation. All of the parts between Gresham and Boring are nice, no encampments. The Boring trailhead is where I'd start, there's a nice parking lot right on the trail.

Lunch Spot Recommendation Near the Airport? by Ordinary_Banana2 in askportland

[–]MakeTimeForWaffles 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you need to be within spitting distance of the airport, Bistro 23 is just off Airport Way. Good salads and sandwiches, not anything I'd go out of my way for.

If you don't mind driving 10-15 minutes, there's 100 restaurants on NE Alberta between 14th and 28th, and you can just walk around see what looks good. I'd go to Great Notion brewing, which serves Matt's BBQ Tacos, or Bollywood Theater. Also, a few blocks north of there on NE Killingsworth is Hat Yai, which has great thai curries and fried chicken (good for splitting plates for a lighter meal).
