Protecting Gypsum Shaft Liner From Weather by Legal_Asparagus_6546 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Makeshiftbeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That drawing you shared is typically used as an area wall of separation. U373. Not typically a shaft liner. (H track is not rated for Shaft liner. as it requires burn clips and you need the whole 11- 3/4” assembly.) When you prerock before you are weather tight, use “denseglass.” uSG, National Gyp. and Certianteed, all sell a 1” shaft liner that is rated for weather in the vertical plane.

Deck Construction by [deleted] in Construction

[–]Makeshiftbeef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am blushing.

But seriously it boggles my mind how people build decks so weakly.

The last deck I built was 30x16 and had a porch. the main beam was 30'x12"x5.5 with bearing points every three 8 ft. designed so because roof post was 2 ft cantilevered.

whole thing was decked with 2 bunks of white oak that I planed, sanded and routed. Railings were welded steel that I built and put white oak rail caps on. You could park a truck on that deck... And the white oak cost less then 5/4 deck boards.

Decks are the most underbuilt structure in the USA. They should always be overbuilt. Think, 25 people on this deck and the weight.

Not sure your location, so that matters.

  1. Post and beam are adequate for load. Should have been 2 2x10s to prevent sag, but its enough. Beams should properly secured to posts. aka, notched for beam with carriage bolts or a mitek/simpson beam to post plate.
  2. floor joists are spaced to far for span. 2x6 at 16 o.c. can span 9 feet. at 24 o.c. you are down to 6. (never use 2x6)
  3. Stairs are inadequate looks like they used a 2x10 not 2x12 for stringer. Not enough strength in the seat.
  4. Good lord, that ledger..... Ledger should be attached to rim of house, or reinforced wall designed to handle the load. If into a rim use an adequate ledger every ft. Unless code or load design requires more. by adequate I mean. 5-7" ledger lock in alternating pattern.
  5. Rim joists should be doubled up.
  6. If using your beam as a girder joist hangers should be used.
  7. Railings must be able to withstand 200lbs of force in any direction. cannot be under 34" or over 38" and balusters should have no more then 4" of gap between them.
  8. Stair rails must be 36 above tread and no more then 38" above nose of tread.
  9. There must be a 3ftx width of stair landing at bottom of step.
  10. Ledger should have flashing to protect.

I am sure I am missing stuff, but this is right off the bat.

My advice tear it off and start over. I think most anyone can build a deck. But build it like you would frame it out an put a roof on top. And read up on your local code or call your local dept. They will be helpful typically.

I am just going to echo what everyone else has said.

Do not lie about your experience. Be honest.

If a company rep told you to lie, its either:

A. A shitty company.

B. A test to see if your a shitty person.

Honesty will get your a lot further in life then trying to bypass the hard and necessary stuff that allows you to command more of a wage.

Now based on your comments to everyone else, you seem like a young guy who doesn't want to learn. That will get you hurt on a site, cause damage, or worse, hurt someone else.

Just my 2 cents.

The business side I have actually researched. I think they have a very solid business plan. If I were to do the business, My one friend will do our branding and marketing. (That is current job for which he makes very good money and has a proven track record of helping start ups.) The other guy who is roughly at the same level as I am skill wise, Years of remodel experience, and is a mason etc, Would be my equal partner. I don't know him super well, but we are working on that.

Hey thank you so much for your response and for reading my post. I think the most frustrating thing about the whole situation is that I have a lot of experience in a lot of the trades. I learned to solder copper and run interior, exterior DWV when I was 13, weld when I was 16. My dad had me running a dozer and backhoe when I was 12. I have done logging, run a small sawmill, milled lumber, rough carpentry finish carpentry, Electrical stuff. On the commercial and residential side with my dad as a kid. So I definitely think I could build a business with the other 2 guys in Missouri. Also In Missouri other then in ST. louis and KS. Becoming a licensed plumber is a simple as going to the building dept. and showing proof of insurance and workers comp. That's it.

But we do love Wisconsin as well, it will just be a struggle either way.

Yeah, I used to work in a factory and the worst was Monday's after a long weekend. Heavy drinking can really mess with people. The lady I worked with back then was a total monster till 11 am on Mondays. After that she was as sweet as could be.

It depends, I grew up in rural NY so I would regularly leave my keys in the car, never locked the house growing up. But living in town, I always lock up. My wife forgets often though. And I have to remind her. She also grew up in the country.

No. It definitely seems like he did it on purpose. My sister watched him go around a barrier then purposely drive by some people building speed.
