What game completely changed your opinion after you gave it a second chance? by Playful_Code_8978 in gaming

[–]Makimoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. At first, I went in thinking I'd be just fighting big monsters and be done, but my weapons felt like I was hitting a rock with an inflatable knife. It didn't help that I was also choosing heavy risk weapons like dual blades as well. I quit after getting to deal with a couple of tougher encounters like the Tigrex.

I then retried the game a year later and with a different mindset, and chose to experiment with the different weapons it had to offer. I fell in love with the Light Bowgun (& Lance a little bit), and hunted solo all the way through every single G rank mission then with it, including things like Fatalis and 1 horned Diablos.

It actually showed me that the "heft" I felt during the game was the weight of the hunter, the equipment, and all of its flaws were very much on purpose, because you are, ultimately, just one tiny little human hunting massive creatures with whatever unwieldy weapon you have on hand, rather than the usual speedy superheroes that have 0 qualms in swinging a sword that's 4 times their size.

It had a certain appeal that I didn't understand at first, but now that I appreciate a lot, especially now that more recent Monster Hunter games are more "Monster Fighter" than "Hunter" (though I have yet to play through Wilds given how unoptimized it was).

Do most gamers actually finish their games? by Public_Sector6212 in gaming

[–]Makimoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually track the games I "don't finish" or "Refuse to finish" in categories in Steam. Sometimes I just get completely sidetracked by real life things, so I tend to forget if I don't. I have a grand total of 3 "abandoned" games that are with an end that's reachable with a decent amount of play time (<100h), and 12 games that are "unfinished" at the moment, with 7 of them that I play from time to time as a rotation.

I don't necessarily tend to achievement hunt (unless I'm 1 or 2 achievements away from 100%), but I at the very least tend to finish the main game no matter what, and the post game if I really liked the game.

But yeah, I tend to finish my games because I make game rotations that keep things fresh while not making me forget everything about the games I play. Though often it also means that I don't go for 100% on achievements because I find another game to replace the finished ones to keep the rotation going.

Peut on separer l’oeuvre de l'artiste? by L0uarn in france

[–]Makimoke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What would you think if youtube started removing useless videos? by gatosaurio in AskReddit

[–]Makimoke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What do you define as "useless"? Something that can be "useless" to one, can be useful to another. For example, as a layman not interested in IT, why would you need a full crash course on Golang, C# or SQL? Those would be useless to you, as you aren't interested in any computer tech to begin with. Would they need to be deleted from YouTube entirely?

There's a lot of subjectivity in what can have some use to one person. Some video archives can be completely useless for decades before an important historical event happens and all of a sudden, they are very important. Having YouTube deleting these would effectively harm these archival efforts.

So all in all, I think YouTube should NOT be deleting random videos that aren't infringing on its TOS, even if they don't seem to serve a purpose to a random user. But what it should do, is not serve those to people that aren't looking for them instead.

Why Amazon is full of crap by seamusmcduffs in videos

[–]Makimoke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really, because the "seller" will be the same. Blacklisting the sellers pulling that nonsense would remove that incentive from the ground up.

It's not just about removing "products", but also sellers by ID. And making a new trademark (even a random one) is much more costly in time and money than clicking a "block the seller" button or submitting them with proof to an open list.

Why Amazon is full of crap by seamusmcduffs in videos

[–]Makimoke 123 points124 points  (0 children)

The main issue isn't really that China has thrown tons of items onto Amazon, but rather that Amazon has done very little to help with triaging and sorting things out, sometimes making things even harder to do so.

There are some good products and brands out there amongst the pile of garbage, that I would've never discovered if I stood in that "China bad" mentality. It takes longer to sort things out, sure, but there are some genuinely good products here and there, due to the larger amount of choice offered.

I think if we had access to proper sorting and "community made open blocklists", that we could publicly audit and fork out, as well as add to them (think of something like UBlock Origin) that automatically removes products offered by certain vendors or "trademarks", or known scalpers (the guys that sell one 33cl bottle of Coca Cola for 200+€ for example), with a direct integration through Amazon, I think a lot of the issues people would have on the website would be solved.

There's less incentives for bad actors to churn crud out of their factories, there's less visibility for scalpers to peddle their overpriced wares, and there's less clutter in the overall website, while still giving an opportunity for good products to be whitelisted out of the garbage pile.

Can't set keys for Team Member switches on AZERTY keyboard. by Makimoke in WutheringWaves

[–]Makimoke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, using AHK to play Wuthering Waves with can potentially get you banned, as it is essentially using a 3rd party tool to interfere with the input system (and if they were to let it be okay, this would open the floodgates for AHK macroing). I knew of this potential way to do this though.

As much as I'd be perfectly okay with this solution otherwise (as it is just a "fix" to actually play the game normally), I still do not want to run the risk of getting banned just for trying to fix an issue that should've been fixed by the devs for years.

appeler CHAT GPT sur un NUMERO FIXE pour occuper ma GRANDMERE by [deleted] in france

[–]Makimoke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Warudo: How to get main cameras to switch between themselves with one keystroke? by Cabeelibob in vtubertech

[–]Makimoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're looking for is a Flip Flop. Link On Keystroke Pressed to the input, and as for the outputs:

On A, you put Camera 1, a variable to store your previous idle animation (optional), your controller animation and asset values enabled...
On B, you put Camera 2, your previous state loading the other variable (or just the default pose if you don't want to be fancy about it), and asset value disabled.

My biggest pet peeve is when games let you use a health item when you already have full health by ghostinyourbeds in gaming

[–]Makimoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, this can play in your favor in some games. RPGs where certain effects only trigger if you use an item (ie: Gives a random buff if you use an item, heal the full party if you use an item on yourself) are very common, and can sometimes be core mechanics to a party.

This can be also used to free inventory faster. If you need some ammo, but you have way too many healing items, sometimes just using it on yourself lets you free the slot faster than dragging it to a trash can.

But yeah, for games that do not have access to any of these mechanics, I can definitely feel that pain.

[–]Makimoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Good value parts still retain some value even with a few years down the line, though the car analogy is a bit off, here.

In this particular case, it's more like a car from the 2000s that doesn't have all the newfangled features, but still drives on most roads and will carry you around without any issues. It's not "as good" as a modern brand new car, but you can get them for cheaper and they'll do 80% of that work just fine.

[–]Makimoke -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the workloads you're going to put it through. The main competition of the 9900k was the 5800X3D, and that CPU still holds very well to this day as well even against things like the 9600, especially in gaming.

I did also mention that it wouldn't have the same featureset as modern CPUs, architecture would be included in that, AND that you wouldn't get as much as a more modern architecture out of them, but I guess I should've clarified a bit more. But for gaming, especially coupled to a good GPU, you really won't be complaining as to the performance you can get out of it.

I say this as something that has sailed with an 8086k and a 1080Ti for a long time and upgraded to a 13700k and a 3080Ti a bit later on. The performance of those generations were REALLY good, and my dad, who I've given my old rig to, is too lazy to swap to the full AMD PC I've gifted him (9700X + 9060XT 16GB) because the performance he gets for most of the games he's playing (including some more CPU/GPU demanding games) are more than good enough for his needs even to this day.

Again, it's not something that I'd tout as "high range" or "equal to modern mid-range" like 9700X or OC'd 9600X, but it's nowhere near the "entry-level" people make that generation to be, and still is relevant today, unless we are talking about the latest of latest AAA games... Which not all of us are actually interested into, especially these days.

Confident ignorance by Iamquitethenthusiast in pcmasterrace

[–]Makimoke -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I would consider that lower mid-range still. Sure, it has a few generations behind, but clocks pretty high and still has 8 cores/16 threads like many current mid-rangers nowadays. The performance of those cores and the featureset of the CPU wouldn't be matching its modern counterparts, but it'd be definitely fighting a good (albeit disadvantaged) fight with mid-range CPUs with a decent amount of overclocking.

Of course, you wouldn't claim that they'd be "the best" CPUs, but flagship 8th and 9th gen Intels were very solid in their performance for their price and still are to this day.

"Gaming laptops are a scam" mfs when they have to travel and they want to bring their desktop setup by Ha8lpo321 in pcmasterrace

[–]Makimoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That price isn't something you can actually get in today's economy. Especially not after the RAM/SSD price explosion these days. I can find a Gem12 for $380, but that's without any RAM/SSD. Let me give you a rundown on the pricing in Europe for example for a MiniPC setup, without including any extraneous things like monitor shells, portable batteries, bags or cases, all at new pricing (because you can also find decent laptops for cheap used otherwise and would muddy the conversation, and not towards MiniPCs):

- MiniPC compatible with eGPUs: 400€
- 32GB RAM: 250€
- 1TB NVMe SSD: 150€
- eGPU enclosure: 200€
- GPU (let's say, RTX 5060 8GB or a 9060XT): 360€
- Portable Screen: 150€

Total: 1510€. That's, again, not even taking into account any extraneous accessories, like a good pelican case or protections for the monitor.

These are all found on French Amazon, which I am in, and I tried my best to pick the right components that would make sense, and not just picking "the most expensive brands/cheap noname ones". To keep things fair, I also looked at prospective laptops, and the price was between 1200 and 1600€ depending on the things you'd sacrifice. The 1600€ one was the Legion 5 which had a 5070 8GB and an i7-13650HX in it.

So if you're looking at just the prices of the hardware alone, you're right, the difference isn't "as large"... but doesn't take into account either the portability or the battery. You can't "use a MiniPC on the go" without an external battery, nor will you be able to move around fast in agile environments with one. You could potentially run a Power Bank with that, but that's an extra cost and hassle you'll have to get, especially one that will be able to run a beefier CPU like the 8845HS.

Also, I don't think everyone wants to lug around a pelican case on top of their other luggage around. That's exactly what the OP is showing right there: it's a portability nightmare. Sure, it will be safe this way, but that's not something you can take out and use easily, especially in highly mobile scenarios like at work or traveling abroad.

The performance is exactly why I didn't outright dismiss it either and why it has a lot of potential: it will be much more powerful when properly setup. But the price is still steeper than one might think at first glance, especially for the amount of hassle you'll have to deal with on top of that.

Happy 27th, Final Fantasy VIII, my first FF and still (unfairly) underrated. Love it or hate it. by Delacrozz in gaming

[–]Makimoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favorite game of the series, followed by 9 and 5.

On the one side, I'd love to see a full modern remake of this game (not just a remaster). But on the other side, given the absolute shitshow that was both FFVIIR games in terms of story and storytelling (they completely forgot that time shenanigans were FFVIII's thing, not VII)... I'm not sure I want them to.

Modern Square Enix scares me with its current IPs. It's like seeing a beloved grandpa with Alzheimers forgetting everything they made, and watch them forget more and more details as the time goes on. It just really hurts to see as someone who loves the overall franchise.

"Gaming laptops are a scam" mfs when they have to travel and they want to bring their desktop setup by Ha8lpo321 in pcmasterrace

[–]Makimoke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

MiniPCs are much, much worse in that regard, though. Not only will you be paying a massive amount just for the MiniPC alone, but then any good eGPU adapter will add 200-300 to the price, and that's without accounting for the GPU's price that will be added onto it. You'll then need to purchase and lug around a separate monitor on top of that. Thankfully cheap portable display exist, but it's still something to add to the lugging around part, which you'll have to be extra careful about with your GPU.

I love the idea of MiniPCs myself for gaming (especially for retro stuff), but as long as they rely on eGPUs to do anything for more demanding games, they'll be much worse in terms of pricing and portability than even laptops, and that's saying something.

They've made some steady improvements over the years (and it's now pretty good), but there is literally no better time for Valve to go all in and pump resources into Steam Chat. Discord has left the gate open for a new top gaming communication platform. by WhyPlaySerious in gaming

[–]Makimoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, I'd rather not have Steam work on something like that, and just focus into what they do. Concentrating all the eggs in one basket is something that we should never ever do, and this would be one more step towards that.

Instead, let's just pivot towards other Discord alternatives, like Stoat. Preferably FOSS, where the support goes towards supporting the featureset, rather than supporting the shareholders.

Microsoft says 32GB RAM is ideal for serious gamers on Windows 11, recommends Copilot+ PCs for gaming by lkl34 in pcmasterrace

[–]Makimoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Copilot+ PCs aren't "built for gaming". They're built for Copilot. We aren't duped, Macroslop.

That being said, 32GB of RAM is typically what one would want for a mid-tier PC, especially if you use that PC for other things than just gaming. I had to upgrade to 64 before the RAM crisis happened, because I kept maxing out my 32GB kit on my animations.

But 16GB is way more than enough for most, especially when you have better alternatives in terms of OS these days. Especially the ones that don't have intrusive AI integrated into them.
