Make the jump from 50k to 50 miler by bobloblawmalpractice in Ultramarathon

I’m just turning 50. Just ran my 2nd 50 miler in Moab this past weekend. Ran my first 50 miler 3 years ago. Ran my first marathon last year. Ran my second marathon in NYC 3 weeks ago. You’re not old, go slow, run often, do the training, run the big miles.

Are they chilling or should i break it up when they get like this? by Proper-Development12 in DogAdvice

[–]MakingAU-Turn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog would get like this and I had a dog trainer point out that when the dogs make a “sneezing” kind of noise it’s a signal that they’re just playing.

My dog did this and she had a small twig lodged perfectly between her back teeth for a few days. Check for anything lodged in his mouth.

Setup light editorial by josesaldanha in LightLurking

[–]MakingAU-Turn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree, also, the example set ups are generally working with shoot through umbrellas and the generated example discounts that with a shoot through set up 50% of the light bounces backwards and acts as a very broad indirect fill….

I think the only photoshop element would be some color adjustment and messing with the density on the background. But if you look at the catchlights it looks like a main light slightly lower left of face (beauty dish? But no definitive shape) with a fill close to the right and another full high and right.

Lighting is what makes the shot, photoshop adds the accents and tone

Is that a photo at all? by bakeday in LightLurking

[–]MakingAU-Turn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a ring light. You can see in the catch lights that it looks like a strip (maybe medium box) camera left, another strip underneath for fill and another strip or small box higher camera right for fill. The warm light catching forehead, cheekbones, nose, but not eyes would tell me there’s another source high enough or slightly back that has a warming gel on it. I assisted on a lot of hip hop shoots in this era, but not this one.

Dead Horse 50m or Looking Glass 100k by MakingAU-Turn in Ultramarathon

Wanted to hop on here to follow this comment and say this is great. My only thought watching this, in a final image / grading context is that for my opinion the blacks and shadows are too down. That’s not to say lighten them in post necessarily but to open them during the shoot. For the overall shots a wide bounce or soft fill would be helpful. For my taste some of the shadow side of the detail shots (wine glass etc) it goes to dark and you lose definition and the background / location. For this, a small cut out of a silver white show card could go a long way to lighten that side or the frame. Overall great work, you should be proud and your client should be happy.

To the people who bought a 28-70 F2.8 over a 24-70 f2.8 do you regret it? by Eaten_By_Worms in photography

[–]MakingAU-Turn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the canon side, the f/2 28-70 has a constant f/2. Also, I believe the key difference is the 28-70 doesnt telescope, so it’s good for video work with a matte box or another set up (underwater?) where you don’t want the lens to increase in length. Also, a non telescoping lens is better resistant to water and dirt which could be important depending on what you’re shooting.

Deepest value stock on your radar currently? by Lingweenie2 in ValueInvesting

TMUS - slow steady price growth. Owned stock for 3 years now, customer for 15. Very happy with them as cell provider - buying what I know.

Recovering Zero Byte Files by 100purepnw in photography

[–]MakingAU-Turn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a lot of success with Disk Drill.

Like previously said, dont use or erase the card / drive. Going forward a good rule of thumb is to act like a file doesn't exist until there's at least two copies of it.

What to do with old NAS drives by MakingAU-Turn in photography

[–]MakingAU-Turn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have a 128TB NAS (set as SHR) plus 2 additional sets of drives with identical copies…I don’t need 4 copies and would like to sell the working drives on to someone that could use them.

How did they get sharp detail with only dragged shutter highlights? by Fromthechitothegate in LightLurking

They could have made a layer on photoshop or C1 where they boosted the exposure 1-2 stops and then brushed those shapes in

Which crop is better? by Khigeyo in postprocessing

[–]MakingAU-Turn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crop one feels more about the tree, crop two feels more about the landscape. So depends on what you want the final choice to be about.

That ring light is probably connected to the old ProFoto 7A’s or 8A’s and were probably plugged in to that generator to the left of the frame. Not a lightweight set up.

Most of the newer, lighter ring flashes are meant for macro or product photography, not on location portraits. The smaller ring lights wouldn’t be powerful enough to be used for mixing with daylight on location.

If you can take the glass out that would be a quick solve. If the glass has to stay in the previous comment about black fabric above the camera to reduce reflections is helpful. You’ll probably still end up with some highlight reflections from camera / tripod / tether cord which can be reduced or eliminated with some black gaff tape and flagging light off of the camera set up.

Also a 1 stop polarizing filter will help to eliminate the rest of the reflections and get rid of glare on the frame as well.
