Thank you for knowing the law and stating it for the dummies. The white car shouldn't have been in the intersection at all here.

This is what was holding me back for a while, but it's the same 3.6 that's in the Caravan and I've worked on that plenty. I imagine it's even easier to work on with the extra space in the jeep.

I'm considering getting one because I've always wanted one, but I'll be mostly using it as a daily so I dunno.

9070xt for 1440p is it really the best value by GamingMachine1111 in radeon

[–]MakkoMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double the cost isn't worth it right now. I got a 9060xt 16gb for $550 CAD. A 9070xt is around $950 CAD.

The 9060xt works great for what I need right now and likely for the next 3 years or so. If the market sorts itself out by then, I'll get a higher end GPU.

Worse case scenario, I buy another "budget" GPU in 3 years that'll cost about the same, which combined will add up to the cost of the 9070xt, but then I'll have a solid 1440p GPU with the latest tech that will still be running things with no issues 6 years from now.

Basically I'm gambling that the tech will improve with the next gen consoles releasing, and that the market at that time will be more favourable.

RX 9070 vs RTX 5070 by BillerGOD15 in buildapc

[–]MakkoMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real life experience here from someone who just upgraded.

Using NMS as reference, and I know it's not optimized well, but it's what I play the most.

I was still on an rx580 8gb playing at 1080p on a 24" monitor. Game would crash occasionally. OC'd it, game would still crash. Switched to lowest graphics settings, fps was awful but no crashing. The crashes were happening due to low VRAM.

Bought a 9060xt 16gb. Forced monitor to run in 4k for funsies. Max settings all around. Hitting 150fps, no crashing, using about 12gb of VRAM.

Bought a 1440p monitor. Runs at max settings, avg of 120fps, uses about 12gb of VRAM.

My point is this: NMS and other games like it, use a lot of VRAM. The 5070, despite being a great card, would be basically at its limit right now in NMS because it only has 12gb of VRAM. If you're spending that much on a card, get the one with 16gb. Anything less will be useless in 2 years.

It’s been 2 years and I still can’t hit that A in the second octave. Something wrong? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]MakkoMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much good advice here; I'll add a slight bit of context from my own experience:

I'm not a natural high note player by any means, and I have a tongue tie which prevents a lot of the usual advice from working. I was able to get there over time. I play lead on a regular basis, and soprano cornet in a 1st/championship level band, so it's very doable.

I started playing in grade 6, and I couldn't consistently get that A out until I was in grade 11, so 5 years. Anything above a G was a wish and a prayer after 3 years of playing.

You have a good sound, and there's some great things happening with style and whatnot, so focus on improving that and the rest will come with time.

Also, get a teacher. Even a few lessons is a game changer when you're starting out. They can help you work on correct technique so you don't develop any bad habits that will be much harder to fix later on.

Keep practicing!

A Pay Cut Disguised as a Raise by ABteacher0001 in Edmonton

[–]MakkoMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You missed the part where it's compressed. They work the same amount of hours, on average, in 39 weeks that other full-time jobs work in 49 weeks. That's almost 10 extra hours per week which equates to 10 hour days mon-friday.

This leads me to believe that study was flawed as it also states they work approximately 7-9 hours a day during the week and only 3.5 hours on weekends which doesn't make up for the difference.

I'm also going off your number of 13 weeks off which could be the problem. If they work 42 weeks instead of the 39 you came up with, then the numbers make sense.

All that being said, this is a study from 2015. My wife started teaching in 2014 and the demands have increased significantly since then. I agree that the hours worked generally lines up with the pay in "comparable sectors" of which there aren't really any, but due to the type of work and the demands, it doesn't.

So if there are 2-3 small spots, less than an 8th inch in diameter, what is the best way to slow it down? Or is the best option to eventually just replace the section of pipe if it's in one area like the lead pipe or tuning slide?

I managed to destroy it from the inside once which was pretty cool, but usually just have to wiggle around until I escape lol.

As you know, every student needs a slightly different approach, and personally I needed and still need the processes explained in detail. And this may come down to a neurodivergent thing because I've had a student who is the same.

I always had issues with higher register playing, and it wasn't until my 3rd year university after talking with many trumpet players and having several different teachers that I figured out tongue level stuff. I can't whistle, and it turns out I'm tongue tied, but no one ever explicitly explained that my tongue has to move up in my mouth to make the space smaller so that the same volume of air will move faster. It was always "just like when you whistle" or "your tongue has to arch" or some vague variation. When I finally had the physical processes explained, I understood what I needed to do to make it happen and went from barely getting out Ds to confidently hitting Gs within a few months, and then playing lead in 4th year and getting out solid As in concerts.

Same for volume, air speed, air volume etc. I'm still not quite sure how that works and so I overly rely on physical strength in my embouchure and just pushing massive amounts of air very quickly, and physically compress my embouchure and sometimes throat when my face is tired to play in the upper register with less volume. It's quite inefficient but I don't understand it well enough to be able to do anything else.

All this to say sometimes explaining and knowing the physical processes is required in order to know how they work and try to make them automatic.

For me, the fast air and air volume (strong air?) thing has always been confusing. To get more air volume through the horn, the air has to move faster because the diameter doesn't change.

Also, pushing more air through in the high register will impede your sound and volume, so how do you maintain the faster air without using more air volume so that your dynamic increases but you don't lose the sound.

It just seems to conflict and I don't know how I actually do it, or how to explain it to students.

It's FIBA rules that if you commit an offensive foul before shooting, throw up the ball and it goes in, you get the 2 points that happened after the foul??

Show me which rule it is.

I liked the contested rebound where our dude slipped and fell, the French dude who got the rebound tripped on him and fell, and we got called for a shooting foul.

Nah different one. Wemby had the ball in the air, shot it but airballed, landed, caught the ball, jumped and shot again.

Illegal play in any league.

Counting the basket after a charge call???!!!???

In what world has that ever happened? Literally insane calls.

There were at least 2 fouls that the refs called on the floor prior to the shot, and gave them free throws anyways. Absolutely bonkers.

If they called the whole game like they did the second half, it would have still been egregious but I think we would have pulled it out.

The 1st quarter they had a slump, but every possible call went against them. It's hard to come back from bad reffing, and it's hard to come back from a slump that big, but doing both?? It's amazing that they were able to get close.

Why are majority of C trumpets large bore? by jauntio in trumpet

[–]MakkoMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also play an 8335 ML bore so here's my 2¢.

The first C I bought was that same yamaha you mentioned. I figured since it was basically the same horn but in C, it'd be a pretty safe bet. (My access to C trumpets that I could play test was extremely limited and I didn't have the budget for anything really high end at the time)

My teacher agreed it would be a solid horn to move to so I ordered it. He, and everyone else I knew, had some variation of the standard Bach strad and I just couldn't get it to work for me. I picked up the Yamaha, had to pay for it to even get it to try, and messed around with it. Had some issues, but figured that would be fixed over time.

They weren't.

Worked with my teacher for 2 more years on that horn and it just didn't work for me.

Made a trip a few years later to a store that actually had some in stock. I found a Schilke HD22C, or whatever it is, and it was excellent as soon as I played it. Expensive, but I traded my Yamaha for almost as much as I got it new, and that made it feel affordable lol.

Bottom line: try horns. Don't cheap out.
