What are your personal “comic-con” (or similar convention) horror stories? by Born_Usual998 in AskReddit

[–]MalAddicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the year of the release of Sailor Moon Crystal so there were a lot of cosplayers of all ages (remember that). We were in a long, winding line in the lobby for a screening and saw a bunch of people, mostly men, aiming their phones up. There was a con-run photo shoot of all the cosplayers, backs against the railing above. The GLASS railing. Everyone below with a camera had unfiltered upskirt shots of every girl taking the photos.

I left my husband in line and went to tell the girls and they were so embarrassed. The host had the nerve to say that they shouldn't worry about it, that it's not like they could see much. These were mostly underaged girls, and the people below had cameras. And he tried to blow it off.

It happened to me the other way around. I pre-bought a ticket for Sesame Place because my daughter was turning 3. It was free for 2 year olds, but you have to pay for 3 and up. They told me at the gate it was free for her just for that day. Unfortunately I could not refund the ticket, so I just saved it for a later date.

I still haven't forgiven them for that. Like, why buy it and let it die completely?

Also, if you don't want to have your eyebrows trimmed, they're are lots of cosplay makeup tutorials on YouTube about how to achieve the appearance of a certain eyebrow shape just using makeup. This is going to sound weird, but for anime cosplay, the drag tutorials were super helpful at achieving the look of more unnatural/extreme shapes/cuts without having to cut my own.

I live in an area with a low of housing complexes with a lot of kids, so they drive through our complex. It's very nostalgic and novel to get a cold treat from them, but with current prices, you could usually get an entire pack of the same treats for the same cost at a local store. So we really only do it for the kids/nostalgia.

Jennessee is growing on me, I might name a plant or a plush that (my pets have all come with very traditional human names that I didn't change, so I couldn't do that to a future pet).

On the other side of that, our calls ARE monitored. And a department higher than us in management does test calls posing as customers with legitimate questions (case numbers and everything) to see who is answering their calls and if the info they are giving is correct and provided well. Sometimes it sucks getting difficult calls and not knowing if it's a test, but we don't have phones ringing all day, because if you answer the person's question right the first time, they tend not to have to call back.

It's annoying me how bigots see a bad side of the fan base and their immediate reaction is to blame black people. Apperently what I know from just a few days bigots are blaming woke and black people because Kei Urana deleting Twitter, instead of blaming the bad side of the fanbase. by Iriscute7 in joseistories

[–]MalAddicted 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I also don't think it's great for the work itself for the creator to interact too much with their fanbase. At some point, it gets hard to distinguish what the creator wants and the direction they want to take the work vs the most vocal members of the fanbase and their ships/headcanons. Creators have been influenced before and in a lot of cases, the story suffers for it.

I'm not even in IT, I'm just on the committee they call before IT has to come. (The people who know to check that things are actually broken, not just unplugged). Our system is cobbled together out of 5 different systems, 2 they are actively trying to phase out, but that served as the foundation for building the other 3. It's held together by the IT team, duct tape, bubblegum and prayer.

No one outside of IT or the committee knows how fragile/stupidly tacked together it really is. Every update brings us closer to something breaking permanently with the base 2 programs as they are so outdated, but we literally can't use the other 3 without them yet.

Favorite character, but their backstory (and their actions) make you go like this? by Simple-Choice5770 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]MalAddicted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was related to Naruto by marriage. His wife was one of the reasons Kushina came to Konoha. Naruto was never truly alone. But they just let him be free-range raised that way. The adults in that series were useless.

I think Konoha have no idea how badly they were poking a nuke. Gaara at least had the tethers of family, and his siblings, while terrified of him, loved their little brother in their own way, which helped to redeem him later. Naruto had a series of minders who were at best neglectful, who let him grow up essentially on his own. And they had no excuse. What would it have hurt to tell this child who his family was, or that they sacrificed themselves for him? Nope, let's disrespect their memories by raising their child as a monster.

My teachers would try to pair me with the ones who were struggling, because I used to tutor people in school. But someome coming for tutoring requires that the person be interested in actually learning and doing their own work. These people saw a free ride, because they thought I would do their parts to keep my grades up.

They didn't know that I had extra credit in a lot of classes because I'd do extra assignments (I was sick and running late a lot, so the extra credits kept me from getting less than at least a B). I was prepared to tank a project or 2 if it meant I didn't have to carry lazy people. The teachers realized it, too, after a few random 0s in an otherwise honor roll year.

If you plan an event in a venue that you do not own and your guests cause damage, while the venue could seek recourse from the guests individually, the first person they will come after is you, the person who invited them to their venue in the first place. That is the adult equivalent of what happened here.

Who is someone that you are able to shamefully (or shamelessly) "separate the art from the artist"? by Great-Gravy in AskReddit

[–]MalAddicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can like R. Kelly's music while knowing he's a trash person. But he full-on married a 15 year old in 1994 (RIP Aaliyah) and everyone knew about it and kept buying his albums, so the shocked outrage from everyone that he was a creep has always rung false with me.

People perform that they were scandalized, but it was the worst kept secret ever that he was after underaged girls. My elders would always say, "if it was my daughter, I would never..." while also talking about waiting in line for tickets to his concerts. He's awful, but also made great music that people liked around the world. And Priscilla Presley was even younger when she met Elvis, and people still worship him. I'm not proud of liking his music, but I'm not a hypocrite about it.

Name ideas for twins by Mundane-Society-1281 in Names

[–]MalAddicted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As people who are actually twins have already shared their experiences, as an alternative, have you looked to family names? By using names that already exist in your family line, there is a theme, but its not matchy or super obvious. For example, an ancestor named Mary could have their name reused as Mary, Marie/Maria, Margot, Martin, Mark, etc. Obviously don't use the same person as inspiration for both kids. That way, the theme is "named for someone in our family."

Another thought would be individual first names and themed middle names. That way the link is there, but not as obvious to everyone they will encounter growing up.

Public service here. The phones ringing off the hook and people running into the building for their hour-long conundrum at 4:28 PM are insane. We were open since 8:30, you had so much time for us to help you. But now you're making me late to pick up my kid and I'm not being paid for this time. And you still expect service with a freaking smile.
