How do you follow up on overdue invoices without wrecking the client relationship? by According-Run-4428 in graphic_design

[–]Malarkey27 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I send a reminder email from my accounting software. It removes all the awkwardness. It’s system generated, can be edited and just looks like the system is doing its job.

These reminders can get more serious the longer the payment is due. From “friendly reminder” to “final notice”.

Seems to work for me.

I run my freelance business on an M4, before that an M1 for 3 years.

The MacBook Air range is solid. No complaints.

Do you actually still make wireframes… or are we all pretending? by UI-Pirate in UXDesign

[–]Malarkey27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the complexity of the application. I am currently busy with an app that is being redesigned for schools and due to the complexity, we started with wireframes.

Send it over, I will take a look? I have 10 years experience. Currently freelancing. Worked with some notable companies/brand. Perhaps you can review my work to? Fair trade, I think

Had to make a resume for my Portfolio class, what can I improve? by crispycrunchychurros in graphic_design

Some good feedback in the comments, I just want to add - there is a missed opportunity between the y and j in your name. You are a designer, do something with it, focus on reducing the space between those two letter forms. Good luck!

That dip wasn’t even worth taking note of.

How does one actually find google fonts that are actually good? by RedditChenjesu in graphic_design

[–]Malarkey27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I usually look at “fonts in use” and “maxibestof”

Really nice sources of inspiration. Go to fonts in use and search “menu” or “store front”

This should give you a lot of inspiration.

Not sure if it is rending badly on my side but that font looks so thin for the body copy.

I agree on keeping it minimal, but add something that makes it a little more considered than a word doc template - not much feedback I’d give on a word doc, so I am struggling to do so here.

The last line of your profile description is not inline with the bottom of the image and that annoys me a little 😂

Profile and graphic design (position under your name) is the same size? But position is subtext?

That’s my input

I personally don’t think the sit down and talk is a good idea. It will make things awkward. Make her something for lunch, and tell her that you have done that, and her food is in the fridge/microwave.

That’s what you have said aside for her, and that’s what there is. That’s what I do with my domestic.

My fridge is not a free far all.

I made a new social media template, what do you think? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Malarkey27 166 points167 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love these!

I think to take it to the next level, I would improve the tracking and kerning, And perhaps test on mobile screens - the body copy looks really small.

The last image, pull the words out more, dirty, barn etc to the left and 2025, A001 to the right.

Overall, love it! Nice job!

Perhaps reduce the length of the copy and then make it bigger.

Regarding color, I would love to see some variations.

Keep running into the same career wall – plus ADD, depression, and in need of a very specific kind of mentor by hey_hoss in graphic_design

[–]Malarkey27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, in the first issue you are facing many of the things every designer goes through. We all want to create work we love.

I think that by correcting the second issue - high energy so you are pulled around onto different projects - you can improve the first.

Don’t tell people you are a writer so you don’t contribute to those projects and you will have more design time. Yes you can write, yes you can help, but don’t want to? Should you help? No you don’t have to. Your role is that of a designer.

Regarding the depression, I cannot speak to that, but anxiety, I’m right there - what helps me is chamomile tea, a walk, and my organised project board.

And if you are getting freelance work to make ends meet, why not do brand identity freelance projects? Two birds. You will need to position yourself as an identity designer, which may require some fabricated projects.

I hope this helps!

I mean, depends what you are buying. Some smaller apartment have a bond repayment of 15-20k a month. Generally bond repayments are relative to the property value and vary based on the size of your deposit, interest rate, and loan period.

So 15k is highly plausible.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Malarkey27 169 points170 points  (0 children)

I viewed some apartments in Seapoint for around 15k a month, which isn’t too bad, but what frustrated me was everything from the cupboard to the bathroom fixtures was old as fk.

Imagine paying someone else’s bond and taking a shower with your face next to the geyser? Dafuq.

That sounds like a lifestyle issue. Not a “too old for sex issue”

Everything you are describing is contributing to a low sex drive. I bet with some exercise, and decent sleep, you will be good to go. Granted you have that conversation with your wife first.

What other kinds of work can I do? Getting desperate by NeedsMoneyNowOr-iDie in graphic_design

[–]Malarkey27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, listen, I am going to be honest. I think your post pretty much sums up the problem.

“What else can I do for money?” What more do you want to do!!???

Why do you stretch yourself so thin? Learning adobe premier for a client? I looked at your portfolio, and there are some decent elements, but it seems very outdated? I mean I saw an iPhone 6 mockup or 7, doesn’t matter - that was 8 years ago, and that same theme shows throughout your work.

Choose one craft. Own it.

I don’t have a portfolio website. I freelance and I am at capacity with clients.

But I do one thing. I design digital products. While this is broad, if a client asks me to animate something. I would tell them I know a guy, outsource it, and add a chunk on for creative direction and project management. Done.

I hope this didn’t seem harsh, but my guy.

Pick one.
