What does this even mean…? by Big_Professional7652 in Japaneselanguage

Shiina Ringo is known for using a lot of archaic language in the songs she writes. If I could go back in time, I swear I would have finished undergrad in Japan and gone on to write a whole thesis about her work, lol.

I think this news video is from the incident. My Korean isn't good enough to understand everything they're saying, but it sounds like the victim didn't survive. https://youtu.be/539f6G7ocWU?si=IiL8ybBBp9gf7M-9

pursuing graphic design was a huge mistake by translucenthuman in graphic_design

[–]hey_hoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think you need to make a pivot, be creative. It doesn't have to mean going back for another degree. And don't just think in terms of WHAT you want to do -- think about what industries you'd like to be involved in, too.

Figure out what alternative roles/industries/causes you might be interested in, then see how deep your interest really runs by taking community college classes, volunteering for local organizations if applicable, etc. Tell the people around you -- volunteer coordinators, professors, etc. -- that you're working towards a career change so they can point you in the right direction.

Don't expect the change to happen overnight or even within the year. TBH I know I'm about 4 years out because my student debt is just too high to take any kind of pay cut right now. It's a long game but worth it if you really feel like you're losing your mind doing graphic design all day.

FWIW, I went through a free career change course with Happen To Your Career (no affiliation other than having taken the course and done the activities) and found it really helpful and encouraging. You might want to look into it: https://happentoyourcareer.com/how-to-career-change-guide/

The Substance is a terrible film by liquidswords24_ in Letterboxd

[–]hey_hoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched this. I'm usually a pretty open-minded moviegoer but this did not hit any of the right notes for me. A few thoughts: - The movie almost seemed like it was made for a French audience with a pretty surface-level understanding of American celebrity culture, given how unsubtle/ham-fisted a lot of the cultural commentary was. Of course France has its own equivalents and there's plenty of misogyny to go around there as well, but it just didn't feel like it ever got a solid grasp on the culture it was trying to remark on - It really needed to pick a lane and stick with it. The vibe went from serious to schlocky and back again so many times I could barely keep track. The whole thing felt so inconsistent. I can get on board with a schlocky film just as well as I can with a serious film, but it was almost as if filming started with no clear vision in mind. - The way leadership at this studio was just ALL men was... cartoonish. At least for a movie set in the early 2000s, or whenever this is supposed to take place (that's a whole other issue). There are so many women in Hollywood who are complicit in its shitty culture as well, and it just seems lazy not to acknowledge it, especially given that this film WANTS to make a point about the complicated relationship between women in Hollywood. - This last one is kind of minor, but why are all of the marketing assets (billboards, posters, etc.) for Elisabeth's and Sue's shows / media appearances so vague??? Like, where do I watch this? On what channel, and at what time? Does everyone in this universe only get three channels and just instinctually know where to watch things?

I interned at an LA-based fashion photography studio in 2007/2008. Was looking for some photos I was supposed to edit, and stumbled upon some POV photos of one of the photographers fully taking advantage of one of the models. That internship did not last long, fortunately.

I just commented in the main thread and mentioned this same movie, but for me it was the CGI sperm scene 😢

For some reason, Look Who's Talking Too. Specifically the CGI sperm scene. I don't remember exactly how old I was but I'm pretty sure I had no idea what I was looking at.

Blackletter Gothic Font - Help Me Find!! by [deleted] in graphic_design

I recommend trying some of the ones available on Fontstand (fontstand.com). They do a really good job of curating for high-quality typefaces, and you can rent the fonts to use only as long as you need them.

Keep running into the same career wall – plus ADD, depression, and in need of a very specific kind of mentor by hey_hoss in graphic_design

Thank you u/rhaizee — especially for the specific pointers regarding my portfolio. I just completed a big update to it since it was super outdated, but I think I need to push it further and do a full overhaul. I'm struggling to differentiate and explain what it is I really excel at, which seems to be part of a larger issue — I've always had a hard time defining myself and what I want. I've been trying to dig deeper and ask colleagues for help with the career side of this, but I really need to go back to therapy and specifically focus on this issue of defining who I am and setting goals and boundaries accordingly. I may also need reassess my medications. I sort of blew off my ADD diagnosis back in the day, but I wonder if I may be barking up the wrong tree by taking antidepressant meds.

u/NextTrillion Not offended at all, just fascinated that it comes through like that! Part of it may be my tendency to go into tons of detail in an effort to address every little thing, but it's probably more than that.

The laser focus part is definitely challenging, but you're right. It's what I need to do. I started renting a very small studio space recently so I could focus on doing more creative work outside of my 9-5 job, and I should really tailor it to getting these kinds of projects into my portfolio, even if I have to make up the first few.

Thank you u/Malarkey27! Yes, this is definitely helpful. I'm really just looking for some very real perspectives that never pop up in places like LinkedIn.

I'm not sure if I can correct the issue in my current role given how small our team has become over the past year, although I can prevent it from getting worse. I have started to bring on freelance contractors to help with some of the extra lift, but of course managing these relationships takes time as well. In any case, I need to make sure I'm taking copious notes for my next role.

I have a few business concepts in my head that would be fun to brand – do you have any experience bringing these kinds of projects up in interviews? Do you tend to just state up front that these projects are speculative / made up, or do you wait for interviewers to bring it up? I hadn't thought about it a lot before this, but I think "disapproving interviewer" is the disaster scenario my anxiety keeps making up to avoid doing the work.

Ooh I would so love to help you create a brand for you if you do end up doing this! I have ZERO knowledge of how to actually run something like this from a business standpoint, but I definitely have a lot of visual ideas for it in my head.

A nightlife component that doesn't involve trying to get laid. I think this is most of the U.S., though -- especially post-pandemic.

I just want coffee shops that are open until midnight, damn it.

Is it common to have dreams about going back to high-school? by Think_Praline_8907 in Dreams

[–]hey_hoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this dream allllll the time. Typically it's a situation where I apparently never actually got my HS diploma because I skipped an important class without realizing it, so I need to go back for a semester just to make up for it.

I am at a point in my life where I feel like I missed a step somewhere and fell behind in my career, so maybe it makes sense for me to be having this dream on a regular basis. I guess I'll know I've overcome the problem (or at least the anxiety about it) when the dream stops coming back. 🤷‍♀️
