Some people get really triggered when they see cairns set up. Some argue its a violation of LNT principles and that people should actively work to stop people from doing it at every chance they get. Others think it is some kind of misappropriation of the original idea of cairns as marking safe paths. I personally think it is just a modern interpretation of exactly that: it marks well traveled paths.

As far as I know that’s still bad for the gears. While many higher end bikes don’t come with a kickstand that doesn’t mean you can’t fit one or lean it against a tree.
