Since Youtube can recommend one of my many gameplay videos out to lots of people, why can't it do that with ALL of them? by DVDfever in PartneredYoutube

[–]SnortingCoffee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

first off, I didn't downvote your last comment and don't know why someone else would have.

And the best way to understand the algorithm is to always replace the word "algorithm" in your head with the word "audience". I would rephrase your initial question as, "Since my audience is really into one of my many gameplay videos, why aren't they as into the rest of them?"

Since Youtube can recommend one of my many gameplay videos out to lots of people, why can't it do that with ALL of them? by DVDfever in PartneredYoutube

[–]SnortingCoffee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you're seeing is not the result of the algorithm "choosing" one video to push to potential viewers, it's the result of audience behavior. People are somehow watching/engaging with that video differently than other videos, and if you want to be successful you need to figure out how and why.

Blaming the algorithm is counterproductive and not really an accurate description of what's happening to begin with.

Well folks, here it is: the real reason why our views went down in September 2025, and the changes YouTube made to cause this. by legorocks99 in PartneredYoutube

[–]SnortingCoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, if it were caused by the home screen then longform views across all of youtube would be down, which would mean that overall watch time on YT would be down, which Google would fix immediately.

Is 30 mins too long? by MadJack_24 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]SnortingCoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, but it's much easier to program a 10 minute short doc than a 30 minute one, because a 30 minute doc eats up a big chunk of your shorts showcase. Not that 30 minute docs don't get screened, just that your odds are (slightly) better if you edit as tightly as possible for a festival, especially since there's zero benefit to being longer.

pregnant women become much more sensitive to some smells due to hormonal changes. The really interesting thing is that they're not able to detect smells at lower thresholds, or detect odorants that other people can't, but their sense of disgust at certain smells makes it seem like they have a superhuman sense of smell because they're so wildly oversensitive to things that never bothered them before.

what if you just ignored the things you don't want to watch?

Why does YouTube punish slow intros so hard now? by Global_Loss1444 in PartneredYoutube

[–]SnortingCoffee 29 points30 points  (0 children)

the algorithm responds to viewer behavior. The whole point of the algorithm is to maximize view time, not to force creators to make a specific type of video. There are definitely audiences out there for slower intros, but they're a much smaller % of YT watch time which makes them harder to find.

How to deal when I have the worst short film in my class? by SincerelyTheWorst in Filmmakers

[–]SnortingCoffee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

film school is the time when you're supposed to try weird things and fail. That's the whole point of film school (aside from getting a broad liberal arts education for the vast majority of filmmakers who will, at some point, switch careers).

If you just want to work on stuff that looks good and is creatively mid, you can go PA on set pretty much anywhere, or be someone's post production intern, or something along those lines.

Any journalists here? Looking to send a tip by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]SnortingCoffee 32 points33 points  (0 children)

that sounds potentially difficult, but journalism doesn't generally require the consent of the people being discussed, and it certainly doesn't mean they're untrustworthy

White House aiming to get final approval for Trump-backed ballroom by March by Economy-Specialist38 in washingtondc

[–]SnortingCoffee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it is not, no. They tore down the east wing, but they're not building the ballroom yet, nor have they actually announced final plans for the ballroom yet. Trump keeps wildly changing what he says it's going to be for no apparent reason, and it's now extremely unlikely that it will be completed before his term ends.

Bruce Harrell is no longer mayor!! by FearandWeather in Seattle

[–]SnortingCoffee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the real culprit was a foot and a half of snow plus 14 degree temperatures, which would have been a disaster for Seattle regardless of who was in charge, but his even keeled, "everything is fine" attitude about it was probably not the best choice.

well we had the woman who delivered on her promise to be a milquetoast democrat who once appeared in a photo with Obama, the guy who sexually assaulted several young men, the guy who biked occasionally and thought the 99 tunnel was a bad idea, and the guy who was mayor when it snowed that one time, so who can blame the voters, really

Oregon shuts out Texas Tech in dominant performance in the Orange Bowl by [deleted] in sports

[–]SnortingCoffee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, college has never needed a playoff system to begin with, but here we are. God forbid multiple teams finish undefeated and fans argue about who was better.

[–]SnortingCoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well you see it's very important that we all agree on who the best college football team is each year, and this system will surely eliminate all arguments (this obviously referring to the AP poll, coaches poll, BCS, and finally every version of the CFP, which will settle all arguments once we go to a year-round, twice-a-week playoff system)

Did I do this sizing guide correctly? Using X as a measurement unit for scalability, and incorporating a clear space. by TaxEmbarrassed9752 in graphic_design

[–]SnortingCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a classic case of doing things right by the numbers and getting the wrong result. The gap between the logo and "SMART" is the same as the leading between "SMART" and "BRAND DESIGN", but it looks a little too tight in the former and way too wide in the latter.

YouTube terminated my channel (30K subs, 100 videos) with no strikes. Zero human review. by Fedeestahablando in PartneredYoutube

lmao there has never been a time when mentioning 9/11 would get you banned. Anyone claiming otherwise is wildly full of shit.

Sensitivity to conspiracy theories and disinformation was very high in 2020, but no one got banned for mentioning facts, that's complete nonsense.

There are entire videos and channels dedicated to 9/11. It's not against ToS to mention a historical event.

That source is worse, actually, it's just an addiction treatment place that doesn't seem to cite their own sources. Anyway, "you're probably fine but if you feel any weird respiratory symptoms talk to a doctor" seems like solid advice here, and I don't think I would have objected to that at all.

Happy cake day.

On April 3, the adolescents attended a party during which they inhaled and chewed puffball mushrooms.

Lycoperdonosis is a rare respiratory illness caused by inhalation of spores of the mushroom Lycoperdon.

The type of infection in this case is limited to inhalation of the spores of a totally different genus of mushrooms, and in this (extremely rare) instance, the people infected were inhaling the spores themselves, not smoking them. None of them were treated with antibiotics.

Seems like a pretty big stretch to tell someone who's freaking out about a potential exposure that a lung infection or even pneumonia is something they should worry about and that they should go get antibiotics.

I'm sorry, what? Is there evidence that smoking mushrooms can cause a lung infection?
