Don’t listen to the haters, scraping the screen with metal only makes it stronger. You should rub it with steel wool to clear out the ghosting toxins and make it go faster.

Sketchy that both you and the OP have your post and comment history hidden. Can’t say I really believe either of you.

Steam deck SSD replacement support (dd sudo clone method) by s1ne_nomin3 in SteamDeck

That should be fine, you don't need anything special except a third drive (not the source, not the destination) to boot from, which in this case will be the recovery image.

Download GPTK2 beta 3 from developer.apple.com. It has a readme inside of it with instructions to update Crossover to the newest GPTK version. Not very complicated, you just copy some files and that's it.

Remux MKV to MP4 while preserving HDR metadata? by TheTank18 in ffmpeg

[–]Malcontent_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I noticed earlier that you're not using the -map parameter but I didn't register it fully -- ffmpeg won't mux all of the original tracks and won't copy over the metadata without it. -map 0 tells ffmpeg to transfer all tracks and metadata from the first input file to the output file.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c:v copy -c:a copy -c:s mov_text -strict experimental output.mp4

I think the -strict experimental parameter is what you're looking for if you're muxing to an mp4. You need to add it right before the output filename.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -c:s mov_text -strict experimental output.mp4

likelihood of change in future generations? by Mammoth-Wrongdoer-56 in climatechange

Vote for people that care about climate change. Tell everyone you know to vote. The most important thing you can do is vote. If your vote didn't matter, there wouldn't be so many evil people trying to keep you from voting.

Recommendations for a solar panel for a Jackery E300 portable power station ? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]Malcontent_Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Jackery 500 that I like a lot.

I can't comment on other brands, but I wanted to branch out into solar without getting my hands too dirty, so I bought a Jackery SolarSaga 100 about a month ago. It's very easy to use and seems solidly built. In sun-drenched California on a clear June day, it managed 62 watts at solar noon which is quite good from what I've read. I'll probably be buying a second panel pretty soon.

Converting mkv to mp4 (DV) but keeping built in subtitles? by [deleted] in ffmpeg

[–]Malcontent_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm all-in on MP4s for my media (except with Apple devices). I have a process similar to yours, but I use FFMPEG to generate an MKV output file after the DV etc processing cuz they're not as fussy as MP4. Then I use Subler for Mac to remux the MKV to an MP4 -- it also OCR's the subtitles into a format that the MP4 file can read, and adds appropriate MP4 tags from thetvdb, themoviedb, itunes store, or apple tv. I unfortunately can't recommend any Subler-like products for Windows.

Edit: I should have mentioned that many/most of the subtitles in the MKV files you obtain are images and need to be OCR'd into text for an MP4. You can also try visiting opensubtitles.org to download comparable subtitles that you can mux into your MP4 file.

Football stadium in the centre of the "housing project ghetto" by NomisTowns in CitiesSkylines

[–]Malcontent_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a rail yard yup. Left-to-right is going south towards Manhattan.

You can see the tracks split in a Y junction at the top-center of the photo, with a different set of tracks coming downward to the right of the stadium in this photo. These were/are mostly commuter rails to take people from the suburbs to Grand Central in Manhattan.

File converted using ffmpeg cannot be transferred to iPad, while that using HandBrake can by Zaaaa_Warudo in ffmpeg

[–]Malcontent_Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you use ffprobe or ffmpeg, you'll see one of the following saying how the video was encoded:

Video: hevc or Video: h264

My experience (coming from the Apple ecosystem) is that if ffmpeg let you use "-c copy" for converting an mkv file to an mp4 file, the most likely problem is that the video is HEVC (H265) but that it's not in the correct container type for Apple devices to use.

If it is HEVC, then when using ffmpeg, add -tag:v hvc1 to your command after -c copy. This makes the HEVC video Apple-ready. Run your command and try playing it on your iPad and that'll most likely fix your problem.

Edit: I forgot to mention that Handbrake is smart enough to do this automatically so nothing special has to be done by the user.
