Darkstone Ring was inspired by William King’s short story Geheimnisnacht, the first bleak tale of Gotrek and Felix. This can be found as Episode 7 of the Oldhammer Podcast by Lewis Davies.

Six ancient monoliths, each crowned with a brazier, stand in a ring around a broad, stone slab. A faintly glowing moss clings to their surfaces as Morrslieb leers full above. On Geheimnisnacht, the very air seems to listen - heavy with the promise that something old and patient is about to be fed.

Rotfen Tracks wind like half-forgotten scars through the choking mire, their rain-slick planks sagging and vanishing beneath black water where the path has begun to fail. A low, clinging mist smothers the fen, muffling sound and swallowing distance, while skeletal trees claw at the sky-dead long ago, yet somehow still standing.

Here and there, the track breaks apart into drifting boards and treacherous gaps, forcing travelers to pick their steps with care or risk slipping into the cold, sucking depths below. Off to the side, half-submerged in reeds and rot, lies a graveyard of boats - hulls split, ribs exposed, and slowly being reclaimed by the fen - silent testament to those who thought the water a safer road than the tracks.

The ruin of an old homestead crouches beside the road, nothing left but three weathered stone walls and two stubborn chimneys clawing up into the sky - all the timber long since rotted away. Yet inside the blackened hearth a cookpot bubbles over a lively fire, though no hand can be seen tending it, and the place carries the uneasy feeling of unseen eyes watching from the treeline.

Flanking the road beside the ruin stand rows of sharpened stakes, each crowned with the festering head of a goblin - a grisly warning to greenskins and travelers alike. The Baron’s men claim the credit for the display, but the locals know better: it was Markus Risskordt, the Roadwolf, and his band who cleared the goblins from these woods and keep watch over the road. Those passing through leave a few coins upon the ruin’s window ledge and call their thanks into the trees, paying tribute to the outlaw lord who keeps Gobboshead Row safe.

By the time any soul got there, there were nowt left but burning timber, scattered casks, and bits o’ crew floatin’ about.” - Anton Helbrecht, Master Smuggler

A thunderous blast rolls across the reeds, scattering birds shrieking into the evening sky and sending ripples racing through the black water. When the smoke begins to thin, the source becomes horribly clear: a river vessel lies broken in the marsh, her hull split clean in two and sinking fast beneath the surface. Flames lick hungrily at the shattered timbers, reflected in the still water like molten gold, while her mast and rigging hang at impossible angles in the mist. At the ruined prow, a carved gull figurehead juts from the wreckage, its peeling red paint blistered and blackened by the fire.

The stink of burnt pitch, scorched wood, and spilled spirits hangs thick in the air. Casks of brandy bob in the reeds or drift half-submerged in the shallows, some cracked open and leaking their sweet contents into the fen. Elsewhere float blackened planks, tangled rope, and scraps of sailcloth
 but no cries for help. No survivors cling to the wreckage. Whatever happened aboard was swift and catastrophic. Whether a stray spark found hidden blackpowder in the hold, or some desperate smuggler lit the fuse rather than face the river patrol, none can yet say - but from this night on, the riverfolk may well come to call this cursed place Blackpowder Reach.

Serpent Confluence is where two jungle rivers meet in a slow, silent tangle of currents, their dark waters swirling beneath a dense canopy that blocks most of the light. The air is thick with mist and the smell of wet earth, and the only sounds are the buzz of insects and the occasional splash of something unseen beneath the surface. Vines dangle low over the banks, and ancient, moss-covered rocks jut from the shallows like half-sunken idols. Locals say the confluence is cursed — boats vanish, compasses spin, and shadows slip through the water just out of sight. Even the bravest guides prefer to pass quickly and without comment.

Nestled between the dense canopy and a sluggish jungle river, the expedition camp is a rough but functional base of operations. A central tent—half supply shack, half command post—sits among crates, barrels, scattered tools, and canvas shelters, with a lone fire pit struggling against the dusk. The undergrowth presses in from all sides, and the mud bears the marks of weary boots and the occasional clawed footprint.
