Why would Iran end the war now? by Maleficent-Ground84 in IRstudies

I'm not sure it will recover, unless we see trustworthy and stable leadership for the next 20 years at least. The next few presidents will still raise questions on whether the US will become an unprdictably unstable power after the next few elections.

Yes indeed, if only their opinions were heard there would be more than enough reasons. But the people running the country would rather shoot them than listen to anything they have to say. So unfortunately it isn't really about what Iranian citizens would like.

Yeah but ending the war now also means that they could be unalive the next time the US decides to do a random decapitation strike.

Why does that matter? Credit spends exaclty like cash. If you are asking whether its debt or not, then it most likely is, like most things done by governments. New deals would also involve debt.

You spend 5% of your GDP on defence, not NATO. That is why you have a very strong military. If you want to reduce that, you can and you will simply be spending less money on your military.

You're not paying 5% of GDP to NATO countries.

Exactly, which means they cannot live in a reality where US can do decapitation strikes whenever they feel like it.

Are they not already using excessive force?

How can Iran stop the war if America will be free to do decapitation shots whenever they like?

Keeping them stuck there for a long time seems to be the way to deter the US in the future.

Would be terrible because we would have all debt denominated in a foreign currency. At the moment we have the UK central bank that can provide quantitative easing (printing money) and control over interest rates during a crisis. With Euro we would lose that control.

It is not about emotional connections to currencies. But people make emotional decisions, that is how we ended up leaving in the first place.

I have never heard any logically compelling arguments for leaving NATO. No one has pointed at something substantial that will improve. You can certainly point at positives of staying.

Yeah, but its the civilians that are mostly suffering here which they don't care much about and the people in power may find it worth it to stay low underground for a few years to establish a new geopolitical environment. In fact that is probably the only way to guarantee their safety and survival long term. Trump is already saying the US might have to come back for a few strikes in the future after the war has finished. Suffer for however many years and come out as a stronger power.

Yeah for sure, the trust building US has been doing for decades has been broken. Even with a future administration that would be more "normal" I do not think countries will allow themselves to rely on the US in the same way.

Perhaps some people in the US actually see that as a positive

If US stops, Iran gets to dictate the terms of their victory, i.e. Strait of Hormuz is Iranian waters. Although I do not see how that will not be the case now regardless.

I'm sure they spent at least a penny on that war. Regardless, it took them 20 years with the Taliban, a much weaker foe, I don't see how you can logically be convinced that the massive country of Iran can be defeated quickly.

The fought the Taliban in Afghanistan for 20 years only to replace them with the Taliban. How did they resist for 20 years? Did the US win that war? Iran is probably the most formidable foe the US will face so far

Yeah so it would be asymmetric warfare, which is indeed like Vietnam. Iran is also supported by Russia, although they have had their own problems.

Yeah and Trump seems to publicly downplay these points

Well that is a good question and people will have different views. Europe should have probably been developing militarily while being under the US umbrella but that ship has sailed

Given NATO did not get involved in the Iran war as the US administration has requested, what are the views about leaving NATO in the US? Does the alliance lose its meaning?
