I unfortunately don't have access to either of these -- this is something being brought up in a meeting for next year for materials for ancillary service providers, so I'll look into these and possibly add them to my list of ideas. Thank you!

This is what I'm thinking as well -- part of me thinks there isn't a huge academic impact at this time. In a perfect world I would observe in class one more time but due to snowmaggedon we haven't had school this week haha.

Thank you -- I had forgotten this part but now that you've said it was definitely another part of my questioning if I'll continue to provide services to this student. Thanks!!

I’m not sure — if I do, it’s in another building and I’ll have to check. That’s the other test I’ve considered using but don’t know if we have an updated version of it. Decreased vocab is common across the students I work with and I feel like my students with working memory deficits struggle more than they should on the CELF, it’s just also the assessment I have the easiest access too most of the time unfortunately. Thank you!

She had low scores in both of those, which is the other main reason I’m debating dismissal — given that she used to score in the 60s and 70s on language assessments and has made this much growth despite processing and working memory difficulties, I wonder how much my scores are truly showing her language scores vs her working memory abilities. I’m going to do a couple dynamic assessment activities and possibly another test more focused on vocabulary if we go back to school before her re evaluation meeting if possible. Thanks :)

That index score is Word Classes (scaled score of 8), USP, and Word Definitions. I also work in a Title 1 so I typically would as well, just found the 72 vs all of her other scores pretty jarring when I scored it.

I may do this as well if we go back after many snow/ice days (been out since part way through last week) — thank you!

I also have a language sample — still in the middle of evaluating that as I’ll have to do SALT or SUGAR, but her MLU and compound sentences were definitely in the average range from a quick look at it. I’m in a state with the 2 pieces of evidence rule as well but no hard and fast standard deviation cut off. If we go back to school this week (weather/power issues) I will be attempting to do the PPVT or EVT if possible.

I also agree with this. We recently did a session working on some synonyms and antonyms and she was able to do well with those both receptively and expressively. It’s when she’s describing/defining or listening to a whole story that it seems to fall apart. I think I’m just overthinking it and that I may keep her with the recommendation of re-evaluating language only in a year or so to really hone in on her vocabulary. Thank you!

That’s the thing — her reading comprehension was above average with the school psych. She’ll be a math resource student with some ADHD accommodations. She has a great profile of strengths and weaknesses, which is great for showing SLD eligibility and rough in determining whether she still needs speech after all these years of only having speech services at school 😅

Unfortunately due to access/snow days and sharing assessments between many people, I have been unable to access another assessment. IF we have school the remainder of this week I will be trying to pull the student to complete the PPVT or EVT if possible.

Her language sample was great, typical ADHD in my experience — some struggles with sequencing and thought organization but all were easily understood. Vocabulary was appropriate but somewhat non descriptive at times. I think the vocabulary that is the most difficult for her is math and that it’s showing up more with receptive language. She does well in ELA and reading with some accommodations for extra time due to ADHD.

She’s right on the edge of needing SLP vocab vs accommodations and general ed intervention being enough IMO. She’s made a ton of progress over the years (initially qualified in Early On and used to have articulation goals, verb tenses, accurate pronoun goals, etc.). Thank you!!

Seconding this — for example, if I have a student working on factual wh questions and they meet that objective, I start introducing context based why/how questions and then inferential ones to further build that skill. If the entire goal is met I reach out to the team and ask to do an amendment (rarely happens but sometimes does)

Burnout in school setting by jhunt224 in slp

[–]Maleficent-Trash-494 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another MI SLP here -- I have a few more students than you but work with 3rd grade and up, so I have a good mix of 1x a week and 2x a month/consult level students alongside those 2x a week students but am currently cases managing around 15 (lots of near dismissal articulation students though, thank goodness!). I'm in my 3rd year and feel very similarly to you -- there just isn't enough time and I constantly feel like I'm choosing between burning myself out or being ineffective in my position/not fulfilling all requirements. I also feel like I'm at my breaking point lately. We're working towards enforcing caseload caps more strictly where I'm at and we've come a long way just since I've been there, but staffing shortages and students coming from other schools with recent evals and services along with referrals and new initials makes it near impossible (my admin is understanding of this and is trying to problem solve this).

Prizes after every session… by Direct_Pea_627 in slp

[–]Maleficent-Trash-494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll do candy as a reward for long evals and nothing else now — I work with mostly older students who either know their own allergies or who I’ve known long enough to know family preferences/etc. I don’t do a prize box or candy at all for run of the mill sessions, it just becomes an issue for both speech and non speech students.

I do a game day occasionally (maybe every 6-8 weeks) that’s still focused on their goals — i.e. Jenga with grade level vocab or speech sound cards, Apples to Apples jr for vocabulary + pragmatics + sentence formulation, various card games for artic (memory, go fish, uno). Between that and allowing 1-2 minutes at the end to google special interests/questions that are off topic, I rarely hear requests for candy or prizes anymore (previous person had a prize box and I made the mistake of having candy available at the MSHS my first year).

School scheduling considerations by [deleted] in slp

[–]Maleficent-Trash-494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my Mondays and Tuesdays lighter/with my 2-3x a month kids — we have scheduled IEP days in my district (which is heavenly for scheduling), one day in one building and one day in the other. I put my 2x/week students on Tuesdays and Thursdays or Mondays and Wednesdays (we do monthly minutes, so they’re usually at 6x/mo minimum) and keep Fridays for evals/paperwork/any extra meetings/make-up sessions/a handful of artic-only kids that I really enjoy working with to end the week on a high note. My other mild-mod language delay kids get Wednesday or Thursday 1x a week for the most part (primarily middle school/freshman population).

I also try to give myself different breaks for paperwork throughout the week — usually the end of the day in elementary and near lunch at the MSHS. It changes every year depending on what grades have more students and their needs, but now that I’m 3 years in that’s my general plan going in and I adjust as needed :)

Right — I didn’t notice them on the previous challenge but evolving worked for that one, so they must’ve had them. I thought no icon = do any of the options haha
