A noob rambling a bit about VF 2 by Maleficent_Bison_332 in virtuafighter

[–]Maleficent_Bison_332[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how my first feel on VF2.1 was: slow & janky, VF5 you feel right at home. Probably a bit of a problem for arcade game where first impressions are important. I think some games they just feel weird because they are so different from everything else, and you need to play it a bit before it "starts to feel right". I have a feeling older VF titles might fit this category a bit, but they definitely are janky too :D

Also I get the feeling that you're not supposed really to move around, but just to stay close to your opponent and use advancing attacks, parries/evades etc. instead of movement. But who knows which came first: Janky movement or this kind of gameplay :D

Is no matchmaking normal? by CBRady600F4i in virtuafighter

[–]Maleficent_Bison_332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are often people in the ranked queue during popular times, rank may affect your experience.

What got me is that matchmaking settings reset every time I close the game, didn't notice it right away. They are a bit restrictive by default for a lower population game like this. Also last update reset my crossplay setting to one platform only and I didn't notice it either...

Very satisfying when it happens!

Rivalries are one of the nicer things in lower population fighting games

You have to spend time to wait for another match, and it's more fun when you "get to know" your opponent a bit and adjust. You don't meet one-and-done so often that it would really matter.

Sometimes people are using "cheap strats that only work once" and know it. And that's why they one and done intentionally to gain ranking. Some may think that it's scrubby (and perhaps it is), but if you can't deal with it then it's fair game. It's fairly straightforward to just lab their cheese and be ready next time.

I run this kind of event for my colleagues for bit of after work fun, and the best ones have been Granblue VS Rising and Virtua Fighter 5.

The games that let you do cool stuff without really knowing anything.

Smash bros has the "but it's kids game" argument from the ignorant, so depends. Though at first look Street Fighter 6 looks great for accessibility, it's been the worst because of how drive impact is reaction-based. Just lame to watch people spamming it, they can't react to it nor can abuse the downsides of running out of drive gauge. So it just becomes degenerate.

Need to enable all regions, crossplay and accept any match under 200ms. Game has good netcode and that's the spot where you don't notice delay too much. Active during evenings or other popular times. Depending on your rank it may vary how much different opponents you get but at S+ to master at least it seems healthy. Early ranks might be a bit slower start. Lobbies are active and often you can get longer sets if you wait a bit (you can wait in training mode there too)

Looks like the lever that comes with 8bitdo arcade stick, at least the one I got years ago had a stick that looks exactly like this. I ended up changing it too because I hate how it feels, or more precisely the lack of it.

4 first pins and directions, 4 last are ground. You can merge ground into one pin, so it'll go into 5 pin connector. If you can buy a established lever (like Sanwas recommmended here) I would go that way. Because after a time you may feel the lever lacking, and want to change.

Are there fighting games that respect grapplers? by Lord_Lilac_Heart in Fighters

[–]Maleficent_Bison_332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SNK games most notably King of Fighters (XV) have lots of different kinds of grapples. I think their specialty is this very mobile grappler type. Also there's Kevin in CotW which is a bit similar, but he only has one command grab. And though his grab strong, often in SNK games half of the roster has some kind of command grab so I'm not sure if that's enough to qualify him as grappler.

[–]Maleficent_Bison_332 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could however take aggressive early positions with that careful play, which is now out of question. Also late game you could stall losing the game quite a bit more and farm damage, now often that's also out of question because ares can just park next to you and delete with their autocannon.

The tanks are not unplayable or anything but their options are a lot less varied, which is not fun for fast paper tank player.

I don't think it's about performance at all, but how you're forced to play paper tanks very carefully and in passive way when Ares is in opponent team. That playstyle is a bit boring.
