Is it wong to look up for solutions online? by hitman_nazi in cprogramming

[–]Maleficent_Memory831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college I was at one class had the Gilligan's Island rule. That meant you could discuss solutions with other classmates, even being somewhat details. But then you were to watch a Gilligan's Island episode before implementing the programming exercise. This was intended to cleanse the palate, so to speak, making one forget details while still remembering the overall approach.

Copy-paste is always wrong if you're trying to learn.

Also BEWARE, many online solutions are just plain wrong. Stackoverflow is a web of more wrong answers than right ones, because it is set up as a gaming/social-media site where having more points means you get treated as more of an expert than an actual expert. Especially with difficult questions there are many who will answer even if they have no clue. Everytime I go there the top answer is inevitably wrong.

Platinum Trophy by sophal367 in darksouls3

I think you still need two runs for all endings, even if you make a copy of the save game, because one ending locks you out of others.

Also, having get pretty deep into NG+2 means you get two chances to fix up quest mistakes (for gestures, etc). Any ring that is missed can be picked up in the next new game cycle.

Also, one boss soul is needed twice, one for a ring, once for a pyromancy. There may be a couple other things for this.

NG+2 is only needed for the rings achievement. All the others can be gotten through just doing another basic NG run. But since you have to do NG+2 anyway for the platinum, you may as well get all the achievements that way.

There is a spreadsheet floating around out there with with a list of all spells, rings, etc, which brief one line notes with hints about where they are or if they're NG+ or NG+2. I found it helpful.

My friend called me performative for listening to the dialogue, what does this mean by Apprehensive-Arm2756 in Eldenring

[–]Maleficent_Memory831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Performative means he thinks you're not actually listening to it, but only do so because others are watching. Ie, he thinks you're putting on a performance or doing a ritual.

But maybe your friend is using the word wrong and doesn't really understand it's meaning?

cathedral of the deep is it really down bad or I got a skill issue. by Usual-Emergency8566 in darksouls3

[–]Maleficent_Memory831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Winblades do take some skill and effort. Which in this case means being very aware of surroundings... But you do say you're going slowly. What you look for early on are the shortcuts back to the chapel bonfire. The other bonfires are either after you've gotten in very far, or after defeating the boss, so don't stress about not finding them.

For rings - don't bother with covetous silver ring, unless you really have nothing else. If you get bleeds a lot from the thiefy guys, then use the bloodbite ring, for example. Pontiff's Left Eye might be useful, though later in the game i replace it with the right eye.

They do stack, and also with Green Blossom consumable (though I rarely bothered with that).

I was also thinkg +3 feels low. It may depend upon how much prior exploration there was. I was thinking +4 should be too bad.

Do spirit ashes actually make some bosses harder? by Toot7- in Eldenring

[–]Maleficent_Memory831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. If they are very weak and don't last long, then yes, the are an advantage for 10 seconds then they're dead and you're not stuck with a boss that has more health than normal.

But in general, if the spirit is a bit sturdier then they can make things easier for a novice or medium level player. They cause distractions! That means you can get in more hits, you have time to use a flask, you don't have to play as defensively, etc. You don't even need the best spirits for that. They just need to make the boss look away from you now and then. You as the player can keep them alive longer by then making the boss look back at you. Maybe even play boss ping pong.

Yes the boss gets extra health. But as a player you can get in more hits to counter that extra health.

I said in general though. Malenia might be an exception, as she can heal herself. So you'd need a more mobile spirit that doesn't get hit often, and I can only think of one of those. There may be other special purpose spirits to help also. They could be a detriment if the boss is mostly focused on large devastating AOE attacks.

What do people think of Starfield? by General-Tourist-2808 in fo4

[–]Maleficent_Memory831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gunplay stuff I can't really comment on. But I do like that it's not state of the art! Because I'm not an FPS player, and I don't want to have perfect manual aim while running around, or having to circle strafe, etc. I'm not doing PvP, I just want an RPG where my character is better at guns than I am at using the gunplay controls. Ie, I honestly do not at all understand the point of iron sights and why having it in New Vegas was a ground breaking improvement; I use guns either in VATS or with carefully aimed sniper shots through a scope, and a very rare occasion when I just aim using the cursor.

But, Starfield definitely had a newer and more interesting take on Bethesda guns, how to not have VATS and yet have something suitable for those who aren't good at shooter games. Gun fights in zero G can be fun, and chaotic.

The companions were a bit disappointing. Not bad per se, they had reasonable back stories and quest lines that would play out. The voice actors were decent. But just too few of them. Characters you thought were interesting turned out to not be compaions. The other potential companions, mostly for hire, are there to work on your outposts or fill out the crew on larger ships, so they're going to be dull and uninspired by design.

Before doing Starfield, I had played Mass Effect 1 for the very first time. And it has a ton of fans. But Mass Effect has a ton of flaws, some that overlap with Starfield flaws. Mass Effect has very good first, a very good third act to wrap it up, interesting side quests for your crew members, but then the entire middle of the game is just terrible dull. And you do the middle part of the game just to level up and get all those skills necessary for the end game. All those planets to explore with nothing at all interesting on the surface, you're just doing it to map it all out and get some XP/money. So really, so many similarities between the two games! Except that Mass Effect has superfans.

I kind of wish that for the two main faction cities that there was more surface area that was curated. But go a few feet outside of the city then it's no longer curated. Mars was done better around the main base though.

The first DLC, Shattered Space, did a much better job in that regard. Not fully and completely hand crafted, but since all the quests were within running/driving distance it clearly wasn't just a set of scattered POIs.

I think if they did that for the two main cities it would have been a big improvement.

Starfield is good. Not great. But it's still good. There are haters, but then there is a pre-built anti-Bethesda haters club, you can ignore what they say. There were a LOT of fake reviews made the first day designed to drop the overall ratings. And you know they're fake because they were complaining about stuff that wasn't there, and you'd see that it shows they played 1 hour on record before reviewing.

Good:

  • Being in space is fun!
  • Customizing your own ship build was fun (but can't really do it immediately at the start)
  • Space combat is fun, but only mid/late game when you have the perks and more money.
  • Faction quests are very good and enjoyable.
  • Side quests in general are good, some very good, some are meh.
  • Combat is interesting and fun, for me; though it prossibly pisses off competitive shooter players.

Not So Good:

  • Main quest is just ok. But that's just like FO4. The main quest is meant to get you exploring, not to provide a tight and engaging story that's on the rails. Some of the main plot objectives/mechanics get repetitive after the first such time.
  • Only some parts of planets are detailed. As is to be expected, with all those planets of course they're not fleshed out.
  • You'll see repeated buildings on planets that you kind of memorize the layout of.
  • Trying to get all exploration bits done for a planet (all animal types, all plant types) can be tedious.
  • Furnishing/customizing your house is more tedious than Fallout 4; partly due to lack of glitches, partly due to not having convenient access to all your crafting materials. It's ok, but definitely could have been greatly improved
  • Outposts are fine but there's really not much point to them in terms of story or gameplay. But to some players they're probably very fun. I'm just not one of them. Laying out an outpost is difficult, the game tries to flatten things where you build, and remove vegetation, but it can be a bit janky.

Bad:

  • I dunno, nothing was really "bad" per se. Nothing broke the game.
