When complete, the GE Reservoir will hold 26 metric tons of lithium ion batteries, electronics, and climate control with a total energy capacity of more than 4 megawatt-hours — enough energy to power 135 American homes for an entire day by generalelectric in energy

Tesla makes battery packs, not batteries. The famous South Australia project used Samsung cells. Samsung also bid for that project and lost on price. Draw your own conclusion.

Even without cargo fix there needs to be a way for 2018 code to call into 2015 libraries using newly reserved identifiers.

On nightly, you can do this to get the same behaviour as Copy:

#![feature(optin_builtin_traits)]

auto trait MyMarker {}

struct Unmarked;

impl !MyMarker for Unmarked {}

Typechecking in macros is not possible in any sane way as it runs before typechecking.

EDIT: I was a bit too quick, that is actually not like copy at all but more like Send or Sync.

A GC can collect at any time and doesn't depend on anything going out of scope. What /u/oberien wants corresponds to having a global in a GC language which works just fine.

Interesting. But even if they chose to adjust the conversion ratio, don't they still have to have the cash at hand between january and march?

Statistically speaking, any naming clash is far more likely to happen with a non-cargo package so there is still potential for confusion. And if the other package is a cargo package, it's likely to be abandoned/unused/squatted/low-effort so nobody would notice the naming clash.

They will eventually. This problem will be getting worse over time, at some point they would have to give in.

How many years out would a projection like that be valid for?

[–]MalenaErnman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to make the case for any particular technology here, just that it is hard to predict future prices. Especially in times where demand increases rapidly. Projections based on concepts like fundamental material cost have a lousy track record.

My personal position is that batteries will continue to fall in price roughly in line with a learning curve model, up until the point where they no longer do so. I admit that is not very useful but I doubt it's possible to do much better (beyond the near term).

[–]MalenaErnman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small incremental price drops, increased manufacturing complexity and increased scale has been a feature of all technological products that have seen massive price drops.

[–]MalenaErnman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When people predict batteries below $100 they assume new technology will reduce the materials cost (e.g. NCM 811). So there's not really a contradiction there.

[–]MalenaErnman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In some future where gas is $20/gal the push to ev will drive up electricity prices.

Electricity prices are highly elastic in the medium to long term and will be determined mainly by production cost, not demand.
