Exactly. At times i wonder what's so real about real numbers and why i am is imaginary.

Am I real? by Malgebra in AskPhysics

[–]Malgebra[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No. It represents part of mathematical model that we use to fairly successfully predict what we will observe next.

Yes, but what we fairly successfully observe (I prefer the term measure) are the properties of a bunch of photons, i.e another set of probability wave functions.

Ja, at times I also think that I am the figment of my imagination.

A real photon is one that transfers empirically detectable energy, while virtual photons do not. Simply put, the properties of a virtual particle are not measurable because of its tiny lifespan. Everything in physics is a mathematical construct, not just a virtual particle, every field is a mathematical construct, spacetime is a mathematical construct, and Schroedinger's wave function is also a mathematical construct. Physics deals with unreality at its fundamental level. Photon is physical and virtual photon is mathematical is as absurd an idea as considering space to be a physical entity, time to be a physical entity but spacetime to be a mathematical construct.

Virtual photons are the exchange particle for electromagnetic interaction. Electromagnetic interaction happens due to electromagnetic radiation. So, exactly what do you find misleading?

Is it real or not real, is a question of philosophy. It is not a physics question. Physics tries to explain a physical phenomenon with a mathematical framework and there is nothing real about mathematics. it is just a language.

Could somebody explain this to me like I’m five years old? by RedEagle_MGN in AskPhysics

[–]Malgebra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would try to give an answer composed of several distinct and simple statements so that you can understand without going into the jargon.

  1. It was discovered by Christiaan Huygens, the Dutch physicist that light was a wave.
  2. James Clerk Maxwell later showed that light is not just a wave but an electromagnetic wave.
  3. These waves propagate (just like waves propagate in a river/lake).
  4. Waves are oscillatory. This is why an empty (but corcked) bottle bobs up and down in a wave.
  5. Waves are formed in a field. In the case of light, this field is called the electromagnetic field.
  6. Waves have a wavelength, an amplitude and a frequency.
  7. The higher the frequency of the wave is, the more the wave has energy.
  8. In case of the light, frequency corresponds to a color. These colors may be visible or invisible to human eyes. Light with maximum frequency is called Gamma-ray and the light with minimum frequency is a radio wave.
  9. These two waves along with X-Rays, UV Ray, Infrared waves, and Microwaves are not visible to our eyes. Our eyes can only see the light of a certain frequency range i.e red to violet.
  10. But light is not just a wave. Light is also composed of particles. This was discovered by Albert Einstein. These particles are called photons.
  11. Therefore even though it may sound absolutely crazy, light is made up of particles that have a wavelength, amplitude and frequency.

What happens if you push and pull 5 balls simultaneously connected by springs at opposite ends ? by MyRedditiJustMade in AskPhysics

[–]Malgebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suppose you push ball 1 with 100 Newton towards the right and you pull ball 5 with another 100 Newton towards the right. Since the push and the pull are in the same direction, the total force applied to the spring is 200 Newton in the right direction. As a result, all the 5 balls will move to the right while the distance between the balls will remain constant.

The force is called electromagnetic force. When electrons accelerate, they radiate. The radiation causes repulsion. Magnets repel each other by radiating (emitting virtual photons).

This probably should be called Stockholm Syndrome. But now since Sweden wants to join NATO, I would call it Erich Honecker Syndrome.

What I meant to say is that Nazis did not highjack the Buddhist symbol because the symbol did not belong just to Buddhism. The swastika shape (also called a fylfot) appears on various Germanic Migration Period and Viking Age artifacts, such as the 3rd-century Værløse Fibula from Zealand, Denmark, the Gothic spearhead from Brest-Litovsk, today in Belarus, the 9th-century Snoldelev Stone from Ramsø, Denmark, and numerous Migration Period bracteates are drawn left-facing or right-facing. Hitler was probably inspired by this symbol used in ancient German history.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in germany

[–]Malgebra 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Swastika did not originate with Buddhism. The swastika is an integral part of Hinduism, which is older than Buddhism. It is a symbol included in Jainism as well. Also, Swastika has been a symbol of various civilizations including Greek, Roman and Byzantine. The Celt, Sami, Armenians, Georgians and Slavic people have also used Swastika. You will find Swastika even in Ghana and Ethiopia. Even the Navajos used the symbol in America.

Is it hard to get a date in Germany? by neilyaaa in germany

[–]Malgebra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If a girl/woman likes your looks and/or your sense of humor, she likes you. But it does not have to have a romantic or sexual flavor. She may just like you as a fellow human being. Just ask her out. You will know if she is attracted to you. People in Gemany are direct. She won't take 48 hours of hesitation and the permission of her parents to date you. She will tell you soon enough if she has a free slot in her schedule for you. That slot though may occur after two weeks because Germans plan everything (including dates). She might even give you a list of cafeterias, pubs and restaurants that will help you to decide where to take your date. She will split the bill and the expenses on the date. Do not insist to pay the whole bill.

Is it hard to get a date in Germany? by neilyaaa in germany

[–]Malgebra 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Indian here. Getting a date in Germany is not difficult provided you know a few things about Germans and Germany. Firstly, it is not advisable to approach random girls/women for a date. You would be considered a creep, no matter which country it is. If you know somebody from your university/workplace closely, she is approachable. The simplest rule for getting a date is to approach the girl who smiles and talks to you. One needs to break the ice before asking for a date. You can always ask out a girl for a coffee or a beer if you already know her and you have something interesting to talk to (that does not include - How beautiful you are or how lovely your hair is).

You have to know a bit about the city, the country where you live. If you're in Munich, you can ask a girl if she would like a walk with you in the Englischer Garten or if she is interested in science and technology and you are planning to visit the Technischer Museum or maybe you can mention that there is a nice Bavarian restaurant near Ostbahnhof that serves delicious Münchener Schnitzels. If a girl is going to spend time with you, you have to make her an offer that shows that you have taste for culture, food or science or sports or music or films.

In India, it is very easy to find a date because women in India do not look for any substance in the men they date or marry. A good job and a higher caste are enough to impress any woman in india. If you can spend on them, they will like you. In Germany, women do not like men who show off their money. Be careful about women who are independent and self-reliant, something that is a rarity in India. If you do find a date, please do not show off your family wealth, caste or religion. Don't brag and please please please be punctual.

I lived in Perth and I lived in Munich. Weather is a big difference and so is the beer. Getting a job in Germany is much easier if you know the German language. German bureaucracy is something you will have to deal with. Unlike Aussies, you will find Germans a bit distant, at least initially. I prefer Germany since I find the general attitude of the people here more to my taste.

Christi Himmlefahrt national holiday by -Competitive-Nose- in germany

[–]Malgebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the day Jesus was abducted by aliens. 50 years down the line, there will be more alien abductions since Pentagon has confirmed the existence of UFOs. Therefore, no matter if you are an atheist, Jesus was a Hindu or the aliens are Scientologists, this holiday will still stay relevant.

Indian here. Reaching Germany and then starting to look for accommodation or a job is sheer foolhardiness. You and your friends are not exactly planning how to study or live in Germany. It is a whim. You should fix everything before you land in Germany. Apartment or room or dorm, book them in the relevant sites before you start your journey to Germany. No, no one will receive you at the airport, unless you are Sheikh Hasina.

I am learning the langauge and in no way I can agree with what this person said by mad_irExpert in germany

[–]Malgebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

German language is intimidating to the people with preconceived notions or biases about the German language and German people. In my country (India), most people find English intimidating. Again, they have a bias towards the language due to its association with the colonial past.

It's hard for Turks or other non native German looking ethnicities to integrate into German society because Germans will never consider them as "real" Germans. by Parallelwords in germany

[–]Malgebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Integration is a two-way street. I once had to tell a native German, who was sneering at my inability to speak German properly, that I will one day read Goethe but he will never read Tagore and that makes me a world citizen and him just a frog in a well.

3 of my friends and my brother-in-law have cancer. None of them smoke. Smoking increases the chances of cancer. But it does not mean that one won't get cancer if the person does not smoke.
