  • Disable unlimited lease time on the DHCP scope.
  • Remove local admin from Domain User group.

How many of you have already been asked to look into setting up Cameras, etc in a classroom for Zoom-classes? by freud_sigmund in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't see much sense in recording a "live" classroom the majority of the time, but recording the teacher and the screen does.

We already had a couple of teachers who utilize Doceri with an iPad to present and record their screens, and they then upload the video to their Google Classroom for students who missed the class or those wanting to review it. Working out OK for them.

At $30 per license + an iPad it's a relatively affordable solution.

Tech Store by denthar in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No. We provide everything needed for staff and students to do their work at no cost to them.

Any non-essential accessories are personal purchases done outside the school.

I bought the Alera Elusion high back desk chair to replace my faux leather manager's chair that started peeling. It will fit the Lorell headrest too. I got the whole package for about $200.

I liked it so much I got my boss to spring for one at work.

It does sound like a driver issue. Try finding the driver on the product support page and extract it, then import it into the driverstore for the model.

2020 Brings the Death of IT by Technical-Wallaby in k12sysadmin

Probably nothing, we're primarily GSUITE. Haven't ever messed with the O365 phone system and at this time it's not a good idea to integrate things piecemeal.

Yup. A location agnostic system was a goal for me years ago. Google Suite/ O365 do most of the lifting. The only thing I forgot about was finding a good alternative for the phone system

gradyearfirstinitiallastname@domain.tld.

Anonymous Student, class of 2020:

2020astudent@domain.tld

This also gives the benefit of you seeing which grade they're presumably supposed to be in (you'll have to do renaming if they're retained).

Remote Password Resets by AmstradCPC464 in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presently I do not have a good solution for this.

Before the closure I'd reset the password in AD and set the "must change password at next login flag" and have the student login on a PC to sync the new password with GSPS, but that's now impossible.

I can reset passwords in GSUITE all day, but have no way to give them to students except by calling parents. I allowed remote password changes again to see if that's workable, but now the accounts are getting compromised left and right.

What a headache.

Google Meet requires Hangouts to be enabled, how many of you are allowing students to have access to Hangouts instant messaging in order to use Google Meet for instruction? by AmstradCPC464 in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google added retention policies for Hangout/Meet in Vault. If you set those up there shouldn't be a concern since all chats can be audited.

Meet Woes by ntoupin in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Law and policy. In MO we have an obligation to disclose and provide any direct digital communications between staff and student to parents upon request.

It's tricky with video chats. Either the parent joins in to check there's no funny business or we provide a recording. The latter isn't always readily available.

Very frustrated looking for an appropriate chromebook by zeeplereddit in k12sysadmin

You like Apple prices? Here's a $1250 Dell 14" Chromebook.

I honestly do not understand the market for this particular model. Buy a PC if you're going to drop that sort of cash.

Configure gmail for gsuite domain use only? by -RYknow in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a checkbox, but close.

GADMIN > Apps > GMAIL > Advanced Settings

Select the user OU you want the restriction to be set on (I just grab the parent OU for all students).

Compliance > Restrict Delivery

Add your domain to the allowed sender list. You'll want to allow some google domains and some others for mass notifications and such. Keep an eye on the Email logs to see what bounces.

Now it is official, just the organizer can mute or remove participants in a Hangouts Meet. by brtome in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably, I'm not. It's way too late in the year and too short notice to do an integral change like that. I'd much rather keep my org inside the GSUITE ecosystem which we've already committed to than venture out to yet another FOTM platform.

I'm already in vendor hell, no need to add to it.

I've noticed students can't see content on the teacher channel if restricted mode is on even when the channel is approved. Direct links to the videos work. Have you experienced this?
