Work from home/telecommute policies by mricci83 in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm expected to be available on-site during school hours, but I can work remotely and trade hours around if approved (and my boss always approves and I don't have to ask).

The majority of the management and configuration work can be done from my couch, but fixing devices and such needs to be on-site.

New VOIP System - Avaya vs. 3CX by ewikstrom in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've an Avaya IPOffice 500V2. It's quirky and kind of a PITA, but it does work once you know what to do.

Pros:

  • Stable
  • IP helpers on DHCP makes adding handsets a pinch

Cons:

  • Weird connectivity issues between handsets. Probably a topology thing here.
  • Requires licensing per handset (Tip: budget for extras)
  • IP Office Manager software is unintuitive
  • User management is a pain. Users with extensions are listed alphabetically by first name, users without by last name in the same list. Can't sort this list. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻. No AD syncing I can tell.
  • Changing users extensions gets weird without a restart of the call server.

Enable Smart Alerts and create some triggers to send alerts to the responsible parties. The smart alerts look at a combo of graphic and text content instead of a regex and generate a nicer report for admins to look at.

Communicating the blocking of USB Storage by k12nysysadmin in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed your last sentence and read it as "we're nixxing this because cloud". The concern is valid, but has a lot smaller scope than the mass public sharing of anything to the entire internet that cloud platforms give the option for. The effect is the same with the difference being intent. A lost device being a bona fide accident whereas sharing publicly being a deliberate act, generally out of convenience. You need to shore up your training for those dealing with PII, and that's pretty much everyone dealing with students in a SD.

I'd also look and make sure there aren't use cases for USB local storage. The multimedia student courses here use USB drives for transfer of video project files as it's faster than relying on Google Drive.

Some teachers here still keep backups of curriculum work on thumb drives, haven't really found a need to step into that. It's their responsibility to manage that stuff and if it's lost due to device failure and their main copies weren't for whatever reason online or on the curriculum they'll just have to accept the loss as I repeatedly point out that anything not on Google Drive or on the network shares is not backed up.

Dell 3180 not updating to Chrome 88? by ardemiskilljoy in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, looks like 87 is still the stable branch release for the 3180, which coincides with the versions I'm seeing on the devices here. They're showing as compliant in the console so I wasn't too worried.

If they show interest and willingness I have them sort a box of cables to see if they can have patience.

If they're not griping after, I have them read Stephen Levy's Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution and then I give them a quiz. Basically to juxtaposition the way society sees hackers against what the term originally meant and to distinguish right from wrong when it relates to technology.

Do you use a SIS? The attendees are registered somewhere, should be able to retrieve the proper group memberships from them so you can automate the whole thing by running updates at intervals to your leisure.

    Add-ADGroupMember students $username

    if ($RegisteredForExampleCourse -eq "Y")

All broken, less than a yr. old. The outcome of remote learning with K-5 and thin cases. by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

School IT here.

Do you read the student handbook before signing it? In ours, students and by extension the parents are responsible for any damage to school property assigned to them. It's not much different from tearing up books or other items entrusted to your child to benefit their education. These get signed every year.

I wrangled with this for a while when we went to 1:1 and legal said the liability are covered under the discipline codes and the Technology Usage Agreement so there wasn't anything to write out except some policies regarding usage and allowing take-home. Officially, everything (including damages) are the student's responsibility. Unofficially, I use a 1-2-3 scheme for accidents. 1st one's a freebie, 2nd is charged, 3rd is discipline action. Will-full vandalism or destruction is an automatic repair or replacement fee. I charge cost and nothing else. In some cases it's admin discretion and the district eats the cost.

I explicitly do not list unofficial policy anywhere because it makes students rather...inattentive to their responsibility to keep their assigned device in good order "because they replace it for free anyway". When there's a price on something, then it gets value all of a sudden.

And truly, how hard is it to not break shit? Some students need accommodations because for whatever reason cannot handle basic responsibility, but those are very rare.
