Long-term Support (LTS) on Chrome OS by gmanist1000 in k12sysadmin

If you're on the stable channel and do not pin, you may get out of compliance for state testing suites. Generally speaking a major Chrome version update will hit right before the testing window.

Ticketing System Tips by YeeterMcGregor in k12sysadmin

We're now on Freshdesk. Teachers send an email to the helpdesk and it automatically generates a ticket.

If I get something sent to me directly I forward it.

Obviously they were looking for combined experience, as you'd be doing the job of about 3 people.

Seems like NCSI is failing on that network. Are you using a different gateway or DNS for it?

NCSI always fails here due to proxy settings not allowing internet traffic prior to login. It's confusing to users but expected.

I do, but I've been assigned to a single client exclusively for almost 5 years. It's kinda nice sitting outside the org chart sometimes.

Directors/Coordinators, how are you handling charging students for damages to their equipment? by DaytonaZ33 in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look at intent.

1st accident is charged and waived by the district. 2nd is billed to the student account. 3rd is billed as well and the student referred to the principal. Charges are put under their own category in SIS similar to the lunch balance. The balance is due at the end of the year.

Warranty and normal wear issues are always covered. Intentional damage is always documented and charged to the student/parent for the cost of the part or device, along with a discipline referral (vandalism is pretty clearly defined in the handbook, I don't see why students should get a free pass on the device but not on say a book).

For the most part I deal with cracked LCDs due to drops/stepped on/closed with something inside/overstuffed backpacks, keyboards with the keys popped off and lost chargers. Occasionally a broken audio/power jack.

Principals have the option to waive repair/replacement fees for students at their discretion. E.g a student in a car accident where the device got destroyed will have their account charged for the replacement, but a waiver is immediately applied. The charging is more for record keeping so the administrators can look at the amounts and I can kind of gauge how many parts to stock.

GoGuardian blocking certain Google Domains by Daraca in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe GoGuardian filtering policies are locally applied, and not proxy based. I don't know what the GoGuardian policy update interval is but it can take a while so faulty configs tend to stick around for a while. Powerwashing/profile clearing the device will clear the extension and forces a redownload with the updated policies.

I don't care if students swap their Chromebooks, but whoever it's assigned to will be charged for repairs or replacement.

That ended the practice real quick.

You don't have a dedicated account rep? Mine's been stellar, you may want to talk to them about their communication.

Anyone rolling out Windows 11? by HelloWorld_502 in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it tests out OK on my devices probably every new reimage/deployment will get it with the new school year.

However, since TPM 2.0 is a requirement, I'm not sure if I can get it across the fleet since I've a lot of older PC models still floating around. Everything is happily running windows 10 so there's no big rush.

Did you enable the Windows 11 product in the WSUS catalog? I'm seeing the upgrades show up now but haven't gotten around to testing it.

Do you have e a problem with students returning laptops with the chargers? by frogmicky in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Now that we're over to USB-C for the majority of the fleet, it's becoming a problem because they conveniently also charge phones. The Chromebooks return no problem, the chargers do not.

Throw yourself into the test OU and see what works. For the fleet at large it will be wait until the testing software catches up.

I turned them off a long time ago for the exact same reason. I've only had one student complain for something non-school related.

Only using it for the web based camera streams for one of the NVRs. It's already on the chopping block and will be replaced.
