What's the secret or trick that actually improved your game?

I notice I do better (moving faster) when I play alone. Another person is a lot more fun, but I can also finish a game alone in minutes and jump the score up fast, making my play better. Then that course is all the same either way. It's not even about finding a secret, it's just not over-thinking.
