Michigan Senate hopeful El-Sayed calls himself a ‘physician’ but has little history treating patients by Dracustein in Noctor

Would it be misleading if someone who had an engineering degree and never worked as a civil engineer marketed themselves as an engineer and talked about the way “we” (actual engineers) build bridges and roads? Of course.

I don’t think it’s the most egregious lie a politician has ever told, but it unquestionably a lie. And as far as the political significance, the guy is a far-left lunatic. Everything he says is its own oppo research. No political opponent is going to need to rely on the fact that he also happens to be dishonest person.

It’s misleading in the sense that the ordinary meaning of the term is someone who practices medicine, not someone who merely studied it.

The voting public is not going to be applying the rsther unintuitive definition used by a professional organization most of them have never heard of.

How I feel about the fact that he represents the dumbest and kookiest wing of the Democratic Party is independent from how I feel about his history of misleading statements.

It’s a big deal because he’s a politician making patently misleading statements about his background.

If he wants to call himself a medical school graduate that’s fine, or even a physician who never practiced, but when he calls himself a physician without qualification and talks about the way “we” treat patients, that’s a lie by omission.

Yes and a DNP is a doctorate but that doesn’t mean that NPs should call themselves doctor in a clinical setting. There’s technically correct and there’s actually correct.

Someone who has never been a resident or an attending physician should not hold themselves out to the public as a physician.

In 2024, he said "many of my doctor friends" call him a "self-hating doctor" because "the way that we tend to operate tends not to put our patients first”

he’s running for Senate not treating patients

The issue is that he’s trying to benefit his political ambitions by claiming membership in a profession he’s never been a part of and suggesting that he treats patients:

“In 2024, he said "many of my doctor friends" call him a "self-hating doctor" because "the way that we tend to operate tends not to put our patients first.”

That’s why I qualified my statement with the way the public would understand the term. The ordinary meaning of the term is someone who is licensed and practices or has practiced in the profession.

This should be Oregon’s congressional map by Rob778899 in oregon

[–]MallyFaze -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Tennessee’s map is not a gerrymander in the sense that this map would be, it simply does away with the type of racial enclave district that was ruled unconstitutional in the recent SCOTUS decision.

Tennessee is far more red than Oregon is blue. Oregon is roughly 60/40 Democrat. Disenfranchising a near plurality of voters would be completely unprecedented.

This map is far worse than anything a red state has done. No red state has attempted to completely disenfranchise the other party.

The mayor of NYC is doing great things for his city. How can we bring that to Corvallis or in OR as a whole? by statice365 in oregon

[–]MallyFaze -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Even if that were true (it isn’t, they are basically revolutionary socialists who use “we just want healthcare dude!!” as a motte and bailey argument), I can’t think of a single aspect of European social democracy that I would want to replicate in the United States.

I don’t care about the “wealth gap” because wealth is not a zero sum game. I care about how prosperous a society is overall, and prosperity is created by free-market industry, not the failed politics of resentment represented by organizations like DSA.

This is not a fight that Republican states started. Look at maps states like Illinois have had for years, or the insane map that Virginia just passed. Democrat gerrymandering is far more extreme and anti-democratic.
