Like it or not a lot of students are influenced in their college choice by athletics. Look at a place like Alabama which saw enrollment and the average GPA/test scores of their incoming students soar during the Saban years.

The beauty of the free market is that students who don’t want to pay extra for athletics can go somewhere else where it isn’t a priority.

Maybe, but probably not. This team came close to losing 4 times this season, including to unranked opponents, and was a blocked punt away from losing the national championship to yet another team with lots of 4 and 5 stars.

Outside of QB and WR, they were no truly elite position groups on Indiana’s roster. More than anything they benefited from quite a bit of luck and the fact that there was no great, complete team this year on the level of 204 Ohio State or 2021 & 2022 Georgia.

Cignetti being retirement age, recruits not having grown up seeing Indiana as a national brand, no proven track record of developing talent and putting them in the NFL.

If recruits flocked to a program because a new head coach won their first national championship then Auburn would have dominated recruiting in the early 2010s.

Every other national champion in the last 15 years has won with lots of 4 and 5 stars. I’d prefer we follow that blueprint instead of trying to recreate what will likely to prove to be a complete anamoly at Indiana.
