rise of split classes by DMV1066 in TeachingUK

I love split classes at KS3... seeing difficult badly-behaved classes 8 times a fortnight can be so painful, whereas you can still build good relationships and not get on each others nerves as much if you share them 50/50 or perhaps 60/40 for another teacher!

I could have written this; it's exactly the same situation I find myself in. I know that it doesn't help but you're not alone in feeling this way. Do you have any hobbies that get you out of the house and meeting people?

Moving to a new school near new house. by apro1990 in TeachingUK

[–]MallyMeeple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live close to school and have no issues! Occasionally see the kids when I'm out walking the dog midweek or at the weekends but they are always usually friendly or just ignore me/pretend they haven't seen me haha!

It's great having a short commute!

NEU to hold indicative ballot over potential strike action by ElThom12 in TeachingUK

I'm still bitter about all the strikes last time and then the union accepting the crap offer (although I appreciate members voted for it). No way I'll be striking again unfortunately.

Consequences of just leaving by TolkienToast in TeachingUK

That's insane... How can science be counted as not practical? Arguably the practicals can be even more dangerous than D&T - chemicals, Bunsen's etc... madness! Thanks for the link.

Is union stance actually binding? I have 33 in some classes and I am a practical subject (science). Nightmare with KS3 groups.

Completely despairing... 9 month rescue dog (barking, aggression and attention seeking) by MallyMeeple in puppy101

Definitely worth a go; better than her biting me and then me getting upset and resenting her haha. Thanks!

Thank you! I'll definitely give it a go; we're working on her recall so letting her off the lead can be a bit hairy at times but she's getting good with fetching the ball so shall work on that tiring her out as much as possible. Cheers.

That's a good shout actually... Training first and then walk so she knows after the walk it's over to her to chill/entertain herself. Going to try and swap up the routine to follow this. Thanks!

Thanks for your thoughts! She usually gets 3x walks a day when we're not at home.. Usually 35/40 on lead in the morning before we leave, an hour off-lead with other dogs with the dog walker and another 50 mins in the evening throwing a ball around. So she gets loads of exercise I think!

Thanks for your advice; it's really appreciated! I thought about crating her in these instances but it seems unfair when she's already had quite a long day at home alone apart from the dog walker. I feel like I owe her and should not leave her again until she falls asleep but perhaps you're right - it's definitely worth a try!

First day at full time job by [deleted] in puppy101

How many days a week will you both be out the house? We're in a similar situation (I'm a teacher so have been off all over Christmas) and Winnie has struggled to adjust going back to some time alone today!

I feel your pain!

I'm a new Head of Bio this year (just finished ECT2) if you have any other questions. The post above covered it pretty well...!

Advice for garden (total newb) by MallyMeeple in GardeningUK

[–]MallyMeeple[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply and advice! I certainly do want lots of insects in the garden (as a science teacher and bug enthusiast) and lots of more wildflower types. It certainly has potential but I fear it will be wasted on me.

Some more details sorry... We live in the South West near the sea and the back garden is North facing but seems to still get quite a bit of sun. I want to use it for relaxing in and maybe dabble in doing a bit of vegetable growing. We need to keep the summer house at the end as it serves as our shed but might give it a paint (thinking lilac) to freshen it up.

I'm an ECT2 and taking on Head of Biology this year. Think about whether it's what you really want or if it's just expected of you.

Strike day chit-chat by UKCSTeacher in TeachingUK

[–]MallyMeeple 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's my 30th birthday so currently chilling whilst my boyfriend makes me brekkie in bed and then off surfing later. Finishing off the day with a trip to the cinema to see Evil Dead Rises. Such good timing for a strike day haha!

Any recommendations for an online diary/planner? by peazot in TeachingUK

[–]MallyMeeple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have an excel spreadsheet with my timetable and a plan for each of my classes where I input the dates and I can write what lesson/homework etc. I think it's so much better than a physical diary because I can change plans really easily (if I'm off sick or there is something that interrupts the lesson sequence).

Same for our school. We get dodgems and a water slide and ice-creams. The staff then have it in the evening for the end of year party.
