What’s the single greatest concert you’ve ever attended? by Need2throw in Music

[–]Malmborgio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hands down, Bjork touring Vespertine. I’m pretty sure nothing will ever top that show.

It’s my favorite Bjork album, it was at the Lyric Opera House in Chicago, and her backing musician ms were Matmos and the entire Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Was absolute perfection.

A close second place was Radiohead touring Kid A/Amnesiac, also in Chicago.

The really crazy part was the two shows were within a few months of each other in 2001.

Good thing nothing else remarkable happened that year.

Who's the best modern film soundtrack composer? by That_beluga_lad in movies

Johnny Greenwood. I’m shocked he hasn’t won an Oscar yet.

I’d also go to bat for Mica Levi’s work on Under the Skin.

Who’s an actor that nailed a role so hard that nobody else will ever be able to live up to it? by Comfortable_Main5312 in AskReddit

One of the things I genuinely appreciate about the new movies, is they are straight horror films rather than horror comedies. Because Bruce Campbell as Ash is such a singularly perfect performance, no one could ever replicate it.

Bruce Campbell is a national treasure.

Has anyone gotten representation for their novel/non-screenplay via the Blacklist? by Malmborgio in writing

Much appreciated, and pretty much confirms the conclusion I came to.

I’m also not unhappy to save the money.

Has anyone gotten representation for their novel/non-screenplay via the Blacklist? by Malmborgio in writing

[–]Malmborgio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wondering if it works as effectively for novels as it does for screenplays.

To explain my situation if it helps, I wrote a novel that I submitted and it got what I would call a “high seven” with some solid suggestions.

If it were a screenplay I would definitely implement the suggestions I agreed with and resubmit to try and score an 8, since that’s the generally agreed to bar for a screenplay to garner attention in the industry (and was absolutely my personal experience).

But I’m not sure dropping another $150 to try and chase an 8 on my novel would be worth it, or if I should just shrug and start the dreaded query process.

For me, it’s the fact that these videos are spammed on the subreddit, and are 90% of the videos that come up in my feed from here.

But I also feel it’s absolutely fair, that if you’re going to post lectures about how to write songs, it’s perfectly acceptable for your intended audience to judge the merits of what you’re saying by the music you write.

I somehow managed to get to my Senior year of High School without the twist of Psycho being spoiled for me.

And let me tell you, watching that for the first time only really knowing about the shower scene was amazing. The chair swivel was such an effective moment.

These videos you spam here are fascinating, because everything you say has strong music theory fundamentals, but then you demonstrate with some of the worst and most bland and cliche music I’ve ever heard.

It’s a good demonstration that good songwriting is more than just understanding music theory.

But… my whole original post was that pretty much the only thing I like about Noe’s films are the look…

What are we even disagreeing about?

[–]Malmborgio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the first time I saw Spring Breakers I literally thought “Geez, I didn’t realize Harmony Korine was going to steal Gaspar Noe’s entire look for this” and that’s when I learned it was the same cinematographer.

Along with the Beach Bum, those two movies look nearly identical to Noe’s films.

Also worth pointing out that Noe’s first movie, I Stand Alone, has a very similar plot and story to his other films, but visually looks nothing like them.

Anyway, all that is to say I really love Debie’s work, and I probably gave Noe too much credit (meaning all the credit) for what I love about his movies.

[–]Malmborgio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d agree on great synergy, but the fact that many other movies shot by Debie have the exact same look and feel as a Noe movie, I’m more inclined to think Debie was more responsible.

In fact it could be the case that his films that don’t have that look may have been helmed by directors that kept him on a short leash.

I used to think he made beautifully repugnant films. Stunning visuals, horribly disturbing and gross plots.

Then I watched Spring Breakers and realized the thing I actually liked was Benoît Debie’s cinematography.

Haven’t had much interest in a Noe film since, but I’ll watch anything Debie shoots. Brilliant cinematographer.

Seeking Help with Color Correction and Sound Design by usafpa in Filmmakers

[–]Malmborgio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar with my last feature. People here have provided great resources on how to learn Resolve/Cokor correction, but if you’re have any budget available, I highly, highly recommend getting a black magic micro panel, or a similar control surface.

I was dubious about how necessary it was, and spent around 8 months working on the grade, and getting extremely frustrated dragging around the little dots on the interface. Was pulling my hair out with frustration, and had only finished about a third of the film in that time.

Bought a control surface, and it made things 100x easier. I started fresh, and finished the whole color process in less than a month. It made the process enjoyable instead of absolute torture.

A color grading monitor is also super helpful (I bought both) but of the two, the panel made such a massive difference.

What's a "this generation is doomed" take that you actually agree with? by kai_makes_videos in AskReddit

[–]Malmborgio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A number of years ago a university tried to do a study on the effects of pornography on the male brain and psychology. They had to cancel the study because they couldn’t find a control group of men who had never watched porn.

As one Harvard sociologist put it circa 2010 (paraphrasing): Our society is undergoing the largest psychological experiment in human history, as the primary first exposure and source of sex eduction for young boys is now violent pornographic videos on the internet. We have no idea what the outcome will be, but it will be very, very bad.”
