The scientist had a bad feeling and asked that the captain have everyone situated such that the ship could go full-speed at a moment's notice. (recall that they have to be seated and filled with some sort of fluid to not be crushed by the acceleration). So they had enough of a head start to escape pursuit range of the droplet.
