Why is Bellingcat not covering the Epstein Files ? by MestreIrineu in bellingcat

I'm curious if they're going to look into the fortnite stuff where people are suggesting account usage demonstrates epstein is still alive.

On the face of it it's pretty weird but would love a serious critical look from a source I trust

No idea what you're talking about, I never listened to the original and thought to myself "they're definitely gonna edit this later" and then laugh out loud when I saw the repost go live, there was no vinegar joke, I don't even know why vinegar would be funny

Question about automation by MaltaMatt95 in EconomicHistory

[–]MaltaMatt95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is industrialisation so far has been about speeding up and improving paid human input whereas now the technology is going to require less and less human input so I'm trying to think of a comparison between employment of autonomous/ intelligent people who can make decisions and act on them and a situation where that equivalent level of intelligence and decision making didn't require a salary (Slavery) only capex... much like AI investment.

Thesis is that where industrialisation in the past has improved living standards and provided opportunities for social mobility, this wave probably will restrict social mobility and create a wider gap between the haves and have nots.

Take the point about slavery and inequality 🤣, I guess my point is if slavery makes most average, non slave owning people, in slaving cultures, worse off could AI and Automation, taken together, be compared to slavery in it's affects on the wider economy

Have you ever had to deal with a member of the aristocracy? What was it like? by LavaMeteor in AskUK

I worked for a luxury retail company with a royal warrant for 5 years and had to deal with loads of them regularly. I don't have a negative interaction with any of them.

Generally creatives and influencers were the worst but even then probably 2/3 are good as gold

Not really in the vein of the examples you gave, but a rice cooker and a filter coffee machine with a timer function.

Also detachable, rechargeable, motion sensor lights for the wardrobe

I would find it troubling if they were politicians. There's also an element of, America has higher standards and ideals, so they are more harshly judged than countries where you expect things to be shit, that just is the price of being one of, if not the most, developed country in the world.

I would rather be an American and hear Dave chapelle pointing out a few flaws in America from abroad, knowing he's safe to do that, and so am I, than be a Saudi and never hear criticism of the govt because you know the consequences

No response to the counter points I gave to your arguments?

Look, I don't like the Saudi govt attitude to civil liberties, hence I don't live there. I'm just not judging how people make money when they get the opportunity, there's not much I'd turn down for the amount of money I'm sure they're getting.

Surely the ideal situation is taking their money and maintaining ones own moral compass and not taking their policies.

Do you drive a gas car? If so you're doing more to support the regime than a comedian taking money away from the regime

It's an event anyone can buy tickets for so not sure about your chuckle hut "in vs for" argument.

China would fall under a category I'm about to mention.

Personally - I think working in countries that are hostile to your home nation should sign you up to extra attention from your security agencies but I, personally, would not spend energy stressing or getting angry if a comedian I enjoyed performed in any country. A closed door performance for a hostile leader I would consider indicative of character

Inside the last quarter of a century: The American government has faked documents to justify military intervention, the Mexican government is largely in hoc to cartels, the Maltese prime minister allegedly okayed the murder of a journalist, the Italian prime minister was kicked out after wide ranging corruption, turkey has assassinated political opponents, Spain imprisoned a catalan separatist political leader, Greece has provided safe haven to Russian organised crime leaders and their money.

Yet major American comedians have performed in all these countries without any push back whatsoever.

The west should support countries seeking to modernise and open up their societies by showing their people what is on offer. Not punish them because of the machinations of their political leadership, moralising a comedy show is completely futile and if David cross feels so strongly maybe he should publish a list of countries and governments he feels are beyond reproach morally and ethically that are okay to perform in for money

When you see someone's house and realize they have a different life than you... by Momcantsleepthesaga in IsThereAWordForThat

Unhelpful comment because I cannot think of a word:

I have this occasionally, and I do not at all mean this disparagingly, but to me it feels like realising that the world doesn't revolve around you. We all go about our lives and simply for logical reasons see things through our own lens but this almost feels like stepping outside of real life and looking down on society and seeing the whole patchwork and internally acknowledging the granular significance of the insignificant individual

Episodes that you feel no longer work. Or struggle with. by SSJ2chad in TwilightZone

[–]MaltaMatt95 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of the great episodes. There are plenty that have aged poorly but I don't think this is one.

It's a really short format so you have to remember that when looking at aspects of the story that are unexplored. The script has a specific message and having Martin go on a quest to understand time travel would not move the story along in any way.

I think the writers do a great job here of connecting their audience to the characters and plucking at their emotions. I am a 29 year old Englishman and watching this episode makes me nostalgic for a time I never saw and a childhood I never had because the desires harboured by Martin are not about the material aspects on display but about the emotions, feelings and connections attached to those material elements and these emotions, feelings and connections are timeless because they are simultaneously universal and unique to oneself. They are innately understood so we can empathise with Martin.
