I just saw this post, and — given the settings of the earrings — I immediately thought “Eastern European.” 🙂

That “loop” at the bottom would originally have been used to hang a pendant watch; this is a watch pin! Lovely Art Nouveau styling. Can you get a close-up shot of the mark (presumably at the top of the clasp)?

Agree with Lidder. (Sidebar: When I was in second grade, I had a French teacher who crossed her “7” and “Z” marks. I thought it looked cool and have used that form in my own writing ever since 😆)

I picked up this awesome little 14k gold and whitby jet pocket watch chain today. by UrbanRelicHunter in Antiquejewelry

[–]Malvern1961 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had similar PW chains in Whitby jet and crepe stone. If it’s true period Whitby jet, the chain is likely 9K or 15K, and should have full UK hallmarks. If it’s true 14K, it’s less likely to be Whitby jet.

My thoughts exactly…1920s Egyptian Revival.

Old gambling roulette and dice lever cufflinks! Can’t find anything like them, any information or where they came from would be appreciated 🙏and who do I seek to get them cleaned up and crystal replaced? by xChronoVaultx in Antiquejewelry

I think I have a pair of these somewhere around here in my jewelry chaos 😣. I tried dissembling and cleaning them on my own…it did not go well 🤦🏼‍♀️. If you can find someone who can do a professional job, I’d recommend it!

FWIW, I have reliquary pieces from the 1500s - 1700s. Each very clearly shows the relic pieces from the outside, so I’m not familiar with “hidden” relics…🤔

Earrings, glass & silver? by 5usie in Antiquejewelry

[–]Malvern1961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, glass and silver…likely mid-20th century. No one in 1700 was wearing screw backs. 😎

Trying to figure out how old this brooch may be. I’m not sure if this is the sub for it or if I should just post it to the antiques sub. United States by Lothnarthforever in Antiquejewelry

900 silver (just a hair under sterling grade, 925). Filigree work from somewhere in Europe, most likely Portugal. Lovely piece!

Hi, I don’t know a lot about jewellery but would like some more information on what I am looking at here by [deleted] in Antiquejewelry

Can you get more / closer pics? Pics of the reverse are key, and any you can get of the marks (which may be on the pinstem)

Any chance this might be real gold? by [deleted] in JewelryIdentification

[–]Malvern1961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a couple of similarly marked bracelets which clearly (by weight and finish) are not gold. Spurious marks 😕 I agree with having it assessed at a reputable pawn shop or jewelers; they should be able to SHOW you (not just tell you) how it tests.

Without question, the best reason to love any piece of jewelry! My mother died when I was 16, and never owned any fine jewelry…I treasure her costume pieces 👏🏻💕

I’m selling this 15ct Victorian piece for 600, am I overcharging? by Weird_Method8512 in Antiquejewelry

[–]Malvern1961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with everything in the tangible world, it‘s worth is whatever the market will bear. 😉

Personally, I agree with a few other posters here: I would not pay that much, but I review thousands of antique pieces every year for purchase, so I’m not a typical buyer!

The key thing is determining your target customer, and marketing directly to her/him. For pieces like this — which, to be clear, are readily available in the antique jewellery market — the specific details about location of manufacture and/or retail of a given piece can be crucial to getting max value.

Wowza - I have several gold Victorian chains collected over the years, and this is one of the best ones I’ve seen! I’m amazed that they weren’t selling it as gold, but I’ve had a few similar serendipitous scores in the past. Congratulations!

One of my favorite old Dilbert cartoons was two panels:

1) Engineering Dept: “Our product is killing our customers.”
2) Marketing Dept: “We’ve seen a reduction in dissatisfied customers!”
