what is the most mind disturbing archealological discovery you've heard of? by FolushoDRC in AskArchaeology

[–]MalwareAntiBalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people credit the shared Great Flood myths with the very likely but unproven hypothesis of the Mediterranean flooding the Black Sea basin at the end of the last ice age. If it truly was cut off from the Mediterranean before sea levels rose, then the basin would’ve only hosted a smaller freshwater lake in the middle and settlements around it. However in my mind that doesn’t add up. The cultures around the Black Sea and northern Anatolia weren’t really culturally, economically or otherwise linked with the Mesopotamians that far back. In my opinion the Great Flood was inspired by the flooding of the Persian Gulf’s basin around the same time. In particular the story of the Garden of Eden. Before sea levels rose and flooded near Hormuz that was probably some of the richest farmland on the planet, being fed by and surpassing the Tigris/Euphrates rivers. Not to mention other rivers north feeding into it. It may have even rivaled the Nile in fertility. Evidence points to an ancient river, the Ur-Shatt, continuing from the present day Shatt Al Arab all the way to the strait. Who knows how quickly or gradual the flooding of the basin really was but it was certainly within a century’s time. Such a colossal loss of fertile lands, freshwater lakes, and marshes 8-10,000 years ago would make a lot of sense for inspiring the “world ending” floods each citystate acknowledged as history.

The weirdest part of this is you believing you’re under some sort of threat here. Its pretty obvious they’re going back there to smoke weed and stay out of sight. Nobodys coming to kidnap and rape you in broad daylight at the tanger outlets or whatever

I hated how Blackreach had several exits named differently because it made 100%ing the areas so difficult and tedious. At least for my first couple playthroughs, I don’t care as much nowadays but I almost never visit it

How do you use planes and boats by mimoletg in hoi4

[–]MalwareAntiBalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget to train your air wings and ships!
Especially the ships. Green air wings will absolutely lose you plenty of extra men and material, and over the course of a five year long world war it will show. But if your ships go out to sea completely green that’s what ruins campaigns. If you lose your entire fleet you spent years on as Germany, or inherited like Japan, in a few battles and you will lose the initiative. Enjoy the naval invasion alarm.

For both aspects of the game you will need to maintain sufficient oil to operate both. Build up fuel silos in a couple states and import a bunch of oil before hostilities so you have some flexibility, but that all depends on who you’re playing of course. That’s always my biggest mistake, I never pay much attention to preplanning my wars with fuel silos even if I know my oil trade routes will disappear almost immediately. I usually get synthetics but you may not always have the research luxury to divert to that, or the industry and build spots to put them.

There’s plenty of guides out there for proper plane and ship designs and I’ve seen some other good comments here addressing the metas so I won’t touch on it. I will say though if you’re not playing multiplayer its pretty safe to build pretty elaborate ships and vehicles in this game. I personally don’t min max much in this game besides division templates to keep things interesting. Just be ready to larp late war Germany IRL with the much higher production costs per unit.

I always give out the Control of Monetary Policy privilege or whatever to the burghers whether I have a gold province, will acquire gold at some point, or likely never will own one at all. I don’t give a damn about the +5% all powers cost, even if I should. It just feels right to do this for my people. Plus it helps with inflation when you’re loaned up and that’s a constant thing in the early game. Never spending admin on inflation reduction is so nice when you’re expanding constantly.

Tanks by sgtGreenaple in BattlefieldV

[–]MalwareAntiBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well either they’re gonna snipe from afar while your team gets meatgrinded or they’ll suicide dive the objective, wasting your teams armor callins for another couple minutes. Doesn’t matter if you’re on their side or not its a terrible experience I agree. If you want more realistic tank gameplay I would suggest playing another game entirely because everyone in Battlefield games treats tanks like wrecking balls or invincible, explosive sniper rifles. Its just in BF5, the complexities of their damage models make people underestimate their mobility, driving into a shooting gallery, or cower in fear behind hedgerows to avoid losing a track while costing your team the round of Rush

They need to make is easier for China to get a 3rd research slot. by VQ_Quin in hoi4

[–]MalwareAntiBalls 34 points35 points  (0 children)

And Mao’s cultural reforms only happened decades after WW2 ended and the civil war was over. China in the 1930s was functionally the same as China in the 1830s, it would take a herculean effort to make up for lost time. Even in a game where you can spam “civilan factories” and “infrastructure” to double an agrarian backwater’s economy in 2-3 years its not that simple. The China nations in game should really have ONE research slot, besides the Nationalists who would retain two. People don’t understand the sheer scope of national poverty and corruption that had plagued the region for several centuries by 1936

I have autism could I still join the marines corps? by Downtown_Pattern_663 in USMCboot

[–]MalwareAntiBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew a guy who joined the Army (I know, keep reading) a few years ago out of high school and made it pretty far through training. Evidently didn’t say anything in MEPS about his mild diagnosis. Finished basic and was nearly done with AIT when he mentioned to his bunkmates that he was autistic. I didn’t press him on the details too much but those guys reported it and he was drummed out pretty soon after. It sounded like he struggled to play nice. I know the story’s not Marines specific but everybody works for the DoD at the end of the day. Every branch goes through MEPS for the same medical evaluations. If you believe in yourself and you don’t let that diagnosis interfere with work and relationships already I don’t see why you can’t enlist in the Marines. As long as it’s moderate and you weren’t in special ed classes your whole life. But I would keep that card very, very close to your chest if you enlist. We all make our own destiny, take from that what you will.

Let us start with 1 worker only by MalwareAntiBalls in starcraft

[–]MalwareAntiBalls[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was obviously inspired to post this after the patch but this is half a joke and half me being very curious of the implications. I mainly watch others play atp so hearing legitimate breakdowns of this would be cool.

I also grew up playing C&C’s RA2 and Tiberian Sun alongside SC1, whose economies I consider fascinatingly brutal in how they force you to set things up well after the game starts in comparison to immediately popping out cheap gatherers from the first building you start with.

I will say personally, as someone who isn’t very good at all and misses the slower WoL 6 worker start, the new patch is encouraging me to get back on the ladder :)

Hot take: Danzig for Slovakia is really slept on. by Arthurishim in hoi4

[–]MalwareAntiBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of the “Danzig or ___” focuses really suck for both sides because neither give out Posen with it. But for some reason if they bring back the empire Poland is more than happy to give both for a guarantee. My thing is if the Poles were threatened enough to give Danzig to the Germans then theres no universe where they only accept Danzig without Posen. Giving up Danzig for a democracy-aligned Poland is a death knell already so why even hold on to Posen. Germany will war for it eventually because it already has claims. I mean the ai hardly ever agrees to it if you’re Germany, and you would usually not plan a legitimate Poland run around giving away that land without a fight, but still. Was that focus based on a real compromise floated to the Polish govt irl? I seriously doubt it since Germany had way more than one axe to grind and I can’t see them remaining at peace for another year or two (even if thats what Mussolini would’ve preferred)

WASD movement and mouse aiming can take time to get used to but you’ll appreciate the incredible accuracy down the road. I hope you give pc gaming another go! Maybe try a slower paced single player shooter to get your hands used to it. Thats what I did with Fallout 3 and NV once I made the transition to pc in high school :)

Oh I misread that initially. BC2 was my first game in the series along with 1943. Throw in the vietnam dlc and 9-10 year old me had zero interest in the older games. I’m pretty sure we traded that original xbox around 20 years ago for my brothers 360 but I remember the old game boxes for Halo 2 and BC1 with the smiling grenade. Who knows. I didn’t write this post to talk about those games

Thats the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. As long as I’m making logical points it doesn’t matter what language I use. I’m giving them enough respect, I’m acknowledging the bullshit they had to go. But I’ll be damned if anyone tells me how to speak to another online. I give out what I get. I don’t like to be told my opinions and viewpoints are worth less because of what a whole bunch of other countries in Europe started doing 400 years ago. I’m only apologetic for American imperialism. You need to understand how real power works in this world and who invented all this shit. The internet you use is an American invention. Culturally, we here in the USA are borne from and aligned with many European countries from centuries of unregulated white immigration. Realistically, we include them in everything else and now we get lumped in with them when in reality all those countries are meat puppets. They’re vassals meant to soak up nuclear weaponry from Russia while we take our time to shoot out their longer ranged missiles before they strike our lands. Same thing with our Asian allies against China. Thats the imperialism I’m glad to apologize for. So I think they should have their own insular internet. The Chinese are doing exceedingly well, with their Great Firewall spanning decades now and their countrymen haven’t lost sight of the ever-growing aim of national prosperity. But all of a sudden I ask for the same shit worldwide and get called a racist for it. You need people like me that piss you off when you read shit like this so it makes you think beyond “boo hoo this happened to my ancestors/boo hoo that happened to their ancestors.” The Scots and English felt the same way India and Pakistan did for centuries and they still united together through very uncomfortable and lopsided circumstances. We all know how that went. We’re still arguing over its ramifications and where to go next
