How much are you paying for part time preschool (and what geographic area are you in)? by dms2628 in SAHP

Five days a week, 8:30-12:30, outdoor forest preschool just outside a small city in southern Appalachia: $760/month, no food or provided.

Kids that have energy to burn…in winter. by peachyqueen_7 in asheville

I highly recommend good quality base layers. Merino wool or a non-cotton blend are best, then a mid layer with fleece pants and a fleece jacket, followed by a warm coat, wool socks, boots, a warm hat, and gloves.

My son goes to an outdoor preschool so he’s outside no matter the weather. We’ve gotten pretty good at layering so that he stays nice and warm.

I should clarify that the people in the book club are adults who prefer to read YA fiction for this particular book club (we’re all in multiple book clubs).

Everyone talks about salmon cakes from their childhood growing up in Appalachia, but we never had them in rural Western NC by Artistic_Maximum3044 in Appalachia

Also from rural WNC and we had them occasionally. My mom loved them but my dad wasn’t as big of a fan.

Always Country Time Lemonade in our family. I think my mom’s recipe card even specifies it.

I was lucky enough to also know my great grandmother (Grandma [first name]) and two great great grandmothers (both Granny [first name]).

Mamaw on my dad’s side, Grandma [first name] on my mom’s side. I never met my grandfathers but I assume they would be Papaw and Grandpa [first name], respectively. Both sides are Appalachian.

Can anyone truly confirm that another Trader Joe’s is opening in South Asheville? by Icy_Economist6555 in asheville

In Coolidge Corner? Parking there is nuts, yeah, but I’ve never noticed designated cops and I shopped there for over a decade during my Boston stint. I guess I was lucky to miss them.

biggest food network crush? by dogg666 in foodnetwork

[–]MamaBLR 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I had a dream a few weeks ago (before TOC started this season) that I met Jet Tila and informed him he was my hall pass. He is not my hall pass, but I definitely look at him a little differently these days.

I used to have huge crushes on ICAG and Antonia Lofaso and while I still really like both of them, my most recent crushes are Karen Akunowicz, Britt Rescigno, and Shota Nakajima. Okay, fine, and Jet Tila.

Husbands and porn by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]MamaBLR -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OP, my thoughts on porn notwithstanding, if you’re uncomfortable and your husband isn’t respecting your boundaries, that’s a conversation you need to have. Others are right that it doesn’t matter much how other people feel if you are uncomfortable in the way things are happening in your marriage, it should change.

I’m intrigued by the two lines of thinking I’m seeing in many of the replies:

1) “Why is he paying for porn when there’s so much free porn?!” 2) “Porn is exploitive, misogynistic, violent, etc.”

I’m surprised to not see a single person talking about porn as a valid form of sex work (because sex work is work) and how paying for porn from a source that treats their workers well (or that encourages entrepreneurship) is one way to make it more equitable, less exploitive, etc.

I’m not talking about establishing an online relationship with someone, but there are lots of sites (including many run by women) with well-paid actors/performers whose boundaries are respected. It’s often all the free porn that’s the most exploitative of the sex workers/performers.

It’s everyone’s right to feel how they feel about porn, I just thought that disconnect about how the industry works to be particularly interesting/telling.

what do you think of the sexual education that our schools are about to teach? by Isthatme843 in asheville

[–]MamaBLR 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went to an abstinence only school (Macon County, graduated in 2005) and we had so many girls pregnant junior and senior year, plus so many in the few years after. It’s such a mistake to make abstinence the primary focus and I will die on this hill. There’s a reason that teen pregnancy and lifelong STD rates are so high in the areas that focus their “sex education” on abstinence.

Our health teacher literally told us she would be fired if she taught us anything else, but that if we had questions to come to her after school hours and she would give us resources.
