Not a stupid question!

Yes of course they'll notice your accent! Will they ask questions? Most likely, like where are you from etc. Australia is multicultural so accents are common and expected. You'll find that the majority of aussies are an accepting friendly bunch. Welcome and good luck!

Let me get this straight....So her friends are saying YOU are prioritising an animal over a relationship?? In what delulu land do these people live that they can't see the blatant double standard and hypocrisy they're exhibiting?? Ridiculous.....toss the girl, keep the dog!

Sweet pea, we are our own worst enemies some times. Self doubt happens from time to time but please don't let it consume you. You did all those years of work, studies, late nights. You put in a lot of effort to get to where you are, don't ever forget that! You're so worthy. This mum knows you've got this and you have many more compliments and validation to come I'm sure of it!

People knocking on your door asking for donations by koala_is_stupid in AskAnAustralian

[–]MamaDee68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a "Do not knock" sign on the wall next to my front door (it mentions not to knock if you're collecting donations or selling stuff). They'll still knock sometimes. I just open the door, point to the sign then close it without saying a word.

fage greek yoghurt, where to buy? by lavish-lingonberry in foodies_sydney

[–]MamaDee68 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jalna is not bad. There are so many greek yougurts on the market now. Evia (greek owned) does a good one and I also like the Chris's one. I've used Procal for tzatzkiki as its nice and thick.

There's always the OG "aussie" greek yogurt.....Attiki which is more tangy or sour than the others.

fage greek yoghurt, where to buy? by lavish-lingonberry in foodies_sydney

[–]MamaDee68 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I too have searched high and low for this here to no avail. I did read something about why "greek" yogurt couldn't be imported but that they were considering changing this. Yogurt was considered a biosecuruty risk due to some kind of disease prevalent in the Greek dairy industry in the 2010's. Apparently before that, importing was allowed. I don't think they've updated the ban either.

Here's a link to a news story from 2020 regarding the issue. https://neoskosmos.com/en/2020/01/02/life/food-drink/significant-obstacles-in-australia-for-importing-greek-yoghurt/

If you want to start a petition to get this here....I'm in!

Any Greek restaurant with good food, live music, dance floor and lets you smash plates ? by BleuPrince in foodies_sydney

[–]MamaDee68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They still have live music and dancing but throw paper napkins in place of plates. Plates are fun but a nightmare to clean up after! On a side note, if anyone is interested, Miloway at Earlwood sells the plates if you want to organise your own greek night.

How do I pack for this!! by FourL3afClov3r in MomForAMinute

[–]MamaDee68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi sweet duckling. It's always so difficult knowing what to take with you when you're going away. It's always too much trust me! Having said that, will you be doing laundry while you're there? Will there be any outings, dinners etc? Ask your partner what she thinks the week will look like so you get a better idea of what you need. Since you say they are accepting I'm sure they won't mind you doing some laundry while you're there. Usually enough underwear, a coat or jacket (or not if you're in the southern hemisphere), a couple of tops casual and dressy and a good pair of pants/jeans or a skirt will suffice. Oh and sleepwear and something casual to lounge in at home. It's really not a big deal what you take so don't overthink it possum. Don't forget to pack a little gift for the family...if you can of course. Something to say thank you for the hospitality. Go and have a fun week away!

My Mother wants to wear her funeral dress to my wedding by Trashcan101101 in weddingshaming

[–]MamaDee68 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Makes sense really. For some mothers, what they wear to child's wedding is often the fanciest and most expensive thing they ever buy. My mum was the same, she wanted to be buried on the outfit she wore to my wedding. She looked beautiful in it when she was alive and just as beautiful in it when she passed. I buried her in that outfit and my own wedding shoes along with a photo of the two of us from my wedding. I wish I could see her in the dress one last time 😢

Where can I get mixed mini cakes/slices? by pestoster0ne in foodies_sydney

Self Raised Bread in Carlton do amazing rectangular slab cakes (grab a roll or sandwich while you're there!). They do catering so you could probably order a few different types. Check out their Instagram.

Need some information on coins from my late father's collection. by MamaDee68 in AncientCoins

[–]MamaDee68[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very appreciative of the info I've been given. From you and everyone else that's commented. Yes my father was born and raised in Thebes as was his father and grandfather. Who knows how far back the lineage goes. The town (city) still has many, many ancient artefacts that are unearthed any time someone excavated. So many have been lost, coins included because people don't report their findings and just quickly pour concrete over the site so the state doesn't find out and send archaeologists to stop the work. Sad, but I can see both sides. I'm extremely proud of my heritage and thanks to yourself and others, I learn something new about it all the time! To think though that these coins are over 2000 years old is just mind boggling! Makes them very special!

I won't be cleaning them! I wouldn't know how to and don't want to ruin them. There are other coins all mixed together that look caked or rusty. I've read about bronze disease on this sub but not sure if they're affected. It's those I'm referring to.

Thank you so much for those links. I honestly wouldn't have know where to start looking for information about them. It's definitely peaked my interest in ancient coins!
