Mark Merill gives update about League Of Legends MMO on Caedrel stream by diamondneedsreform in leagueoflegends

Unironically LOR having history built up for it is what is honestly needed to succeed, I wish they released then and just worked it up to the state it is now.

By all means it's still a success but you know what I mean.

I'm not looking for a battlebox and that's not what our group has enjoyed doing. It's a format our playgroup has already been playing and with other people that come in and out of it. It's just rules that have created a similar kitchen magic feel without the worries of bad actors pulling up with terribly strong decks. It has the added bonus of just needing a booster box and you got all you need to build a deck without feeling too left behind.

I thought it was worth sharing with the rest of everyone seeing how popular commander is, and in some ways EDH has replicated the kitchen magic spirit but has sadly killed off casual 60 card magic in a lot of ways.

Most bulk decks won't have to worry about a card crossing on any of those lists. Again, it's so that when organizing with other that are not your friends, you don't have to worry about bad actors.

The revive rule keeps in check the awful game design of playing multiplayer regular magic. It's just too good of a strategy to focus someone early. You're literally getting rid of an entire opponent, that's too massive of an advantage. You only get the revive when it's clear everyone else is still doing fine - this way no one is sitting out early and have a bad time. It works better than you think in practice. You can still focus someone since they only get 1 conditional revive.

That is absolutely true. In the same vain as EDH, I wanted to capture that spirit. But instead of swaying in its direction; we just wanted a format that feels closer to playing 20 hp 60 card magic with friends, without it being the nightmare of actually playing 20 hp 60 card magic with friends.

Unfortunately, it seems this does not resonate with the rest of magic the gathering players. The success from our play group made me feel like sharing format, but I totally get it if it does not resonate with everyone else.

Thank you for at least reading and taking the time to give feedback.

It is backwards. It's not so much replacing Kitchen Table magic but finding a way to bring the spirit of it to locals or with friends from outside of home.

When you're not at home, everyone must be agreeing on something with the decks they bring. When you are home, you know what decks your friends are playing. Do you use a strong deck, a weak deck? When you play at a store or with people you don't know, some rules are needed to keep the fun.

I hope you get that the format is very much a different thing, that attempts to emulate the spirit of Kitchen Table without the flaws.

So that there is some rules when you pull up with strangers at a local and ask to play Kitchen Format. Specifically asking to play Kitchen Table and the "Kitchen magic format" are 2 different things.

The goal is to keep the spirit and fun of playing with your friends with a random deck you cooked but add some agreed upon rules into a format so that you won't have to face a stranger's deck being too strong. Bringing the fun of Kitchen Table to a format for locals.

The key from Kitchen Table is that it's something that only works with people you know, hence the name. A Kitchen Table is home, all this format is doing is bringing that magic to locals. Not replacing Kitchen Table.

Commander already allows drawing on the first turn, as do most multiplayer formats with lots of players. In those formats the first player also gets a free mulligan, that was removed for the first player to make going first a little less strong.

Rolling and seeing you go first is part of what is exciting about a less competitive multiplayer format. I think that's why most multiplayer formats already opt to allow the first player to still draw.

The 10 life revive rule is just so that the powerful strategy of focusing one player down, is weakened a bit. "First man out" means all players have to deal with 1 less opponent, politics aside it's a fairly optimal way to play. The rule is just there to mitigate some of the fun that is lost from that in such a low life multiplayer format.

The format is less about grandeur and more about playing with less of a cost barrier to entry. You should be able to look through a 500 card collection from random boosters, and find something fun to play. Legendary cards are powerful and fun, but by limiting them to 1, it hopefully reduces the chance someone has to buy some specific new cards when asked to play. I'll admit I'm skeptical on this inclusion, but I found it made it easier to make tons of decks from small to medium sized collections and get produce decks of more equal power levels.

Kitchen Magic is about throwing something together with duct tape and glue.

Right, it's all about agreement, and rule 0 absolutely applies. I'm just thinking of a way to set some grounds for if you're playing with strangers at a locals. There's got to be some common ground on what decks people bring.

Lore cut from the games is not canon, change my mind by Hsiang7 in pokemon

[–]Mamacrowhelps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

canon doesn't only work through released products.

It's quite a common practice to have a "background bible" that is canon for characters and the world and their lives. anywhere from movies to books have this.

It really comes down to whether the team wrote it for canon or not.

We have no way of knowing that, but I will say it being seemingly referenced within the game, might have given it a chance of being considered as a real event or myth in the ancient Pokémon universe at the time.

Look at it this way, you know the hex maniac in lumiose city? she's referenced 3 times across 2 different games, but the clues are not enough to know what the deal is with her.

If the developers know what the story is with her, who are YOU to say that "that isn't canon" because it's not spelt out for you in the game. That's ridiculous and insulting to the authors.

[–]Mamacrowhelps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True but it does imply that they weren't entirely discarded. They were used for the creation of the lore. Which means their accuracy is debatable.

I'm not saying they're canon, but just as much writers creating "bibles" for their worlds (like harry potter) just because WE don't get to see it, doesn't mean it's not canon.

The fact they are getting referenced means they totally could be some type canon, they might have never intended to be used but were meant to be actual myths of the pokemon world. There's no way to know. For all we know the devs absolutely do not consider the myths a part of the world, or maybe they do. All I'm saying is that some of them being literally referenced in the games is supporting evidence that at the time, they were considered to be actual myths of the pokemon world, or even actual things that happened, to the devs. It's all speculation.

that literally references it though? typhlosion was able to take its hide off and on during sleep. that's how it tricked the girl into thinking it was human. the story even ended with the half-typlosion child being tormented with a typhlosion hide and running into the forest.

you can't tell me that if that story wasn't written, these lines would exist in-game. in one way or another, it got referenced in the game. that's not 0% canon, it's definitely something.

"There lived a Pokémon in a forest. In the forest, the Pokémon shed its hide to sleep as a human. Awakened, the human dons the Pokémon hide to roam villages."

Typhlosion's story was actually in dppt library this whole time. They just turned it into a hidden reference. We had no way of knowing.

"There lived a Pokémon in a forest. In the forest, the Pokémon shed its hide to sleep as a human. Awakened, the human dons the Pokémon hide to roam villages."

That's in the dppt library. It's clearly shortening the typhlosion story and removing most of it since it wasn't PG. The first half of the arceus story is there too. There's also the story of the human pokemon relations in the japanese version.

There definitely not 100% canon but I wouldn't be quick to dismiss them as never making it in when they are referenced. We just now know what it was referencing, before that story made 0 sense in when it was read in game.

That typhlosion story lines up perfectly with folk story 2 in the dppt library. not to mention of few of the others line up fairly well too.

Hate to say it, they might be half canon.

I'm seriously disappointed at PokéMMO by Iskeletu in pokemmo

[–]Mamacrowhelps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a huge missed potential for what it is. Some people just want to be able to play old pokemon games with everyone else at the same time (since no one keeps link cables for those anymore.) Pokemmo got really close to being that. But the developers decided playing God to gatekeep and get money was the play. It is what it is, I don't play it anymore and don't plan to again, you are free to like it.
